TWO SPECIAL INTEREST DAYS ON POWER, PROPAGANDA AND PATRONAGE IN THE ART OF THE RENAISSANCE: REFORMATION AND COUNTER REFORMATION To be held in the Big Classical Cheltenham College Bath Road Cheltenham GL53 7LD 500 years ago Martin Luther pinned his 95 theses on the church door in Wittenberg, Germany which lead to religious upheaval in Europe. The power of the Renaissance families, together with the actions of avaricious, ambitious Popes lead Luther to make his statements. The warring factions of Protestant Germany, Charles V - Holy Roman Emperor, the Italian Principalities and Francois, King of France were creating tumult in Europe a momentous period in Europe s history. The two days will look at many of the works of the period including Titian, Cranach, Raphael, Holbein, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Hals and Vermeer. A feast indeed. SPECIAL INTEREST DAYS 2017 GENERAL INFORMATION Dates: Location: Rail: Road: Parking: Thursday 26 th October - The Renaissance into the Reformation - Power, Propaganda and the Popes Thursday 2 nd November - The Reformation and Counter Reformation - Art in the Garden of God Big Classical at Cheltenham College, Bath Road, Cheltenham GL53 7LD Cheltenham College is located on the southern side of Cheltenham at the intersection of the A40 and A46 roads. Big Classical is adjacent to the College Main Entrance on the A46 (Bath Road), there will be signs directing you there. Cheltenham Spa Station is served by frequent Inter-city and local trains. But there is no easy bus connection and it is probably best to use a taxi or walk if you have plenty of time (20-30 minutes) From M5 use Junction 11 and A40, following signs for Oxford From Oxford use A40, following signs for Gloucester From Bath and Stroud use A46 From Evesham and Stratford-on-Avon use A435 then follow signs for Stroud From Swindon and Cirencester use A419, A417, A46 There is limited parking at College as it is half -term, main parking is at the Sports Hall on the A40 (Thirlestone Road). Disabled parking is available near Big Classical. The nearest public car parking is at Bath Terrace, GL50 2BA just off the A46 (Bath Road) towards Stroud from College. There is also a public parking at Sandford Lido, Keynsham Road, GL53 7PU Park and Ride: Arle Court Park and Ride (GL51 6SY) is signposted from the M5 at Junction 11. Service 511 (Bennetts Coaches) runs every 12 minutes. Get off at the Rotunda stop by Montpellier Gardens and walk along Montpellier Terrace to Bath Road and turn right Cheltenham Racecourse Park and Ride (to the North of Cheltenham - GL50 4SH, close to the A435 Evesham Road). Service 99 (Stagecoach) runs every 20 minutes, get off in Cheltenham General Hospital, walk out and turn left into College Road.
