WHAT IS PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTION? Do you have it? Unfortunately, not every building has Passive Fire Protection. Even those that do, it may not be to the required specification to abide by modern regulations. Passive Fire Protection is the combining of intumescent materials with the construction fabric of the building to create an air-tight and sealed structure. Sealing any service, hole or void penetrating a compartment wall, floor or ceiling. This then prevents the spread of flame, smoke and heat throughout the building. Hence the practice is commonly known as compartmentation which can be rated in several different levels in minutes. Such as 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 120 minutes and 240 minutes of protection. Each level is dependent on the service, surroundings and substrate to offer the adequate level of protection. Passive Protection should be seen on any services (plastic pipes, metal pipes, ducts, cable s and cable trays etc) that penetrate a wall/ceiling/floor of a compartment. A more common example of a compartment would be a fire escape route such as a corridor or stairway. Other examples would be a service riser which carry pipes and cables up throughout the floors of a building. These compartments are required to be completely air tight and sealed to provide occupants enough time to escape the building. A telltale sign of a bad install is the use of foam. Foam is never a permenant fire stopping solution it should only be used for Window frame applications. IMPORTANCE Fire s are a present risk to a building and its occupants. With hundreds of causes even a small fire can turn rather large quickly. One such example would be the tragic disaster which happened at Grenfell Tower on the 13th June 2017 where 80+ people lost their lives from a faulty fridge which caught fire. Had there been adequate protection the fire may have remained contained within the apartment this combined with the external cladding created one of the worst disasters in recent histoy. Not sure if you have fire protection? It is highly recommended to have a survey conducted if you are not sure about your buildings state of fire protection. Ultimately every building should have an adequate level of protection to allow for its occupants to escape. 5
FIRE STOPPING Your first step to protection It s vital that a survey and report of this nature is conducted to highlight the issues with the building - if any. Below is our four steps to protection 1. Survey - Industry specialists will arrive at your building and begin by identifying the compartments. Fire strategy drawings are the quickest way to identify this which every building should have. These highlight the core areas within the building and the level of fire rating needed for each wall. Capable of visiting any property in the commercial and residential sector our specialists will begin examining the current state of protection throughout the core areas within the building. Taking an extensive record of photographs to accompany the written report thus allowing the client to get a full understanding of the state of protection in the building. 2. Report - The multi-page report will highlight any defects within building from the location to the size of the intended fire barrier with accompanying photographs. This allows for transparency so that the client is aware of what the extent of the defects are and if they wish they can go and find the defects from the report. 3. Costing - The report is then provided back to the client along with the cost for the works found. 4. Remedial Works - If the remedial works are given to Evolutions Fire Protection we intitate the repairs to bring your building back up to standard. Our installations are carried out by certified installers who ensure that each install meets regulation and beyond. Providing the remedial works are given to us, the cost for the survey is completely deducted. There are requirements for a completely compliant installation such as: - Certified Products - Correct Installation Method - Certified Installers - Third-Party Accreditation - Paper Trail Without these you may as well have no protection at all Alex Child, Fire Consultant, Evolutions Fire Protection We offer a unique aspect to providing these surveys - if any defects are found the initial cost for the survey is deducted if the remedial works are given to Evolutions Fire Protection. 6

COMPLIANT INSTALLATIONS The five requirements We believe that there are five requirements that every install should meet to be compliant. Certified Product 1. The Foundation Without a tested & certified product that meets BS & EN standards the install would already be void. Thats why we use FireTherm, whose products are tested and certified by Exova BM Trada and meet all required BS & EN standards. Certified Installers 2. The Builder An uncertified installer is a risk to all parties. At Evolutions Fire Protection we ensure each and every installer is completely certified to conduct their installs, preventing slip ups and shoddy craftmanship on any install. These five steps should be a core part of a certified passive fire installer. Evolutions Fire Protection strictly adhere to these steps to ensure the best quality install we can offer. 8
Correct Installation 3. The Blockwork A poorly installed product that doesnt meet tested criteria is equivalent to an uncertified product. Our products are installed to our manufacturers specifications abiding by tested conditions, to ensure that the install will provide its intended fire resistance. Third-Party Accreditation 4. The Inspector Without an accrediation & constant inspection the installation quality can decrease. With us thats impossible due to the constant assessment of our installs, workers and management by Exova BM Trada. Paper Trail 5. Documents Every product we install, we provide you with a technical and safety sheet. You can access this from our online system at any time. We hold your information permanently but it will remain online for six months before migrating to an offline backup. 9
PUTTING A STOP TO FIRE Each install meets regulation and beyond. We provide clean, professional installs for all applications. 10 10
INCORRECT INSTALL The install shown to the right is incorrect due to the use of timber and pink foam situated in a core service riser cupboard. The timber is a fuel source and the foam doesnt provide any level of protection. INCORRECT INSTALL Shown to the left are services penetrating a hotel room, this install is far from adequate. With no sticker or evidence its uncertain to know what product was installed. This combined with a poor installation proceedure shows this installer has no fire protection knowlege. COMPLIANT INSTALLATION CORRECT INSTALL Shown to the left is a correctly installed fire protection barrier within a hotel corridor. As you can see the use of ablative batt and intumescent mastic are crucial components to a fire barrier. CORRECT INSTALL Regardless of the size, every plastic pipe that penetrates a core wall/ceiling requires a closer device. In this example to the right you can see a high pressure graphite intumescent strap which closes the pipe in a fire. Combined with a standard ablative batt and intumescent mastic install.
FIRE DOOR INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE Your second step to protection Just like fire stopping the fire door plays a vital role in fire protection. Providing a quick escape and a barrier against flame and smoke. Alot like fire stopping, the four step process remains the same for fire doors. The report is then provided back to the client along with the cost for the works found. - Survey - Report - Cost - Remedial Works Our specialists are capable of visiting any property in the commercial and residential sector. Taking an extensive record of photographs to accompany a written report thus allowing the client to get a full understanding of the state of protection the doors currently provide in the building. The report will highlight any defects the doors may have and an appropriate solution for them. This allows for transparency so that the client is aware of the extent of defects. We offer a unique aspect to providing these surveys - if any defects are found the initial cost for the survey is deducted, if the remedial works are given to Evolutions Fire Protection. If the remedial works are given to Evolutions Fire Protection we intitate the repairs to bring your building back up to standard. Our installations are carried out by certified installers who ensure that each install meets regulation and beyond. Upon completetion the client is given a wide range of documentation including photographs before and after the install, the products installed and relevant certifications. We offer a yearly maintenance inspection on all installed/upgraded fire doors that can be conducted by ourselves. Informing the client if any damage has occured that can impeed the doors performance. As we are certified by Exova BM Trada this means we use theirdoor plug card scheme. 12
SAFE ESCAPE We provide certified fire door installation & maintenance. 13 13
EARLY WARNING Providing you early warning systems to allow occupants to escape. 14 14
FIRE & SECRUITY SYSTEMS Your third step to protection Fire Detection Systems provide early warning to occupants that a fire has broken out by using a fire alarm. This can allow the occupants to escape before the fire develops. It is crucial to keep these maintained to ensure that they are working at all times. If not they will pose a risk to the occupants in the event of a fire. Evolutions Fire Protection recommends that regular documentation is kept regarding the condition of the fire systems to ensure they work. Fires can be unpredicatable and start from anything from a faulty white good to a gas leak. Alarms and Smoke detectors play an important role in the early stages of a fire. Ensure your alarms are regularly checked. Just like the passive fire, you can arrange a site inspection/survey to ensure that there are no defects. This is the first part of the process to ensure that your fire warning systems are working. If it sounds like something you would be interested in contact us today to find out more. Do you know when your alarms where last tested? Do you see fault codes on the alarm panel? It s probably time to have your alarm panel inspected and rectified by our certified fire alarms specialists Contact us today via email at: enquiries@evolutionsfireprotection.com Or via telephone at : 0333 200 4355 15
FIRE EXTINGUISHER/SPRINKLER Your final step to protection Preventing the fire from developing the fire extinguisher is a must have for any residential/commercial property. Ensure yours is regularly maintained. The process remains the same for fire extinguishers. - Survey - Cost - Remedial Works Our specialists are capable of visiting any property in the commercial and residential sector to identify what type of extinguisher is required. From that Evolutions Fire Protection will be able to provide you with a quote to install/replace your fire extinguisher. All fire extinguishers installed by Evolutions Fire Protection are to the British Standard 5306. And as mentioned previously individual needs may vary depending on the type of building they are being installed into. One such example would be electrical equipment will require a CO2 fire extinguisher though water extinguishers are often the cheapest. A sprinkler system is activated when they reach a certain temperature. They are great methods of fire supression that can quickly eliminate a fire thus preventing damage and saving lives. They can ensure the safe escape of occupants by keeping core escape routes supressed. There are wet/dry variants that can be used in dry riser applications or within core corridors of your building. Thus meaning that where ever the fire starts it wont be able to directly impact the occupants as they escape. Evolutions Fire Protections certified installers can install or repair existing fire sprinkler systems to bring them up to the required standard. We would advise that you meet all of the previous steps mentioned before looking into sprinklers. A solid fire strategy could ensure the fire remains isolated within compartments for as long as 240 minutes. Evolutions Fire Protection also offer fire extinguisher maintenance to which your extinguishers can be serviced regularly to ensure they are working to their peak performance. 16

THIRD PARTY ACCREDITATION Recommended by Document B Third-Party Accreditation is one of the most crucial parts of fire protection. Few choose to use it but it enables Evolutions Fire Protection to provide you with a certification. There are three types of accreditation you can obtain from a Passive Fire Installer. Evolutions Fire Protection are Third-Party Accredited by Exova BM Trada. The three are as follows; Third-Party Accreditation must always be delivered by a certification body all certification bodies in the UK should be under UKAS. This is the government body to which all certification bodies operate under in the UK. First-Party The individual/organisation providing the goods/service offers assurance that it meets its claims. (I says it s good) Second-Party Association in which the individual/organisation belongs to provides the assurance. (Someone who provides the materials or works with you says its good) Evolutions Fire Protection is accredited by Exova BM- Trada, an international certification body. They are accredited by bodies such as UKAS, ASI, DAC, ENAC, ENAS, TURKAK, LATAK and ANSI. For Evolutions Fire Protection being Third-Party Accredited means that we undergo regular audits. These can be on the basis of company operation/ management processes, as well as regular inspections of ongoing work on sites to ensure it meets the government standards, and a competent assessment of supervisors/installer personnel at site. Third-Party Independent assessments declaring that the individual or organisation meets BS / EN / ISO standards. (Certification body assesses the work done by organisation or an individual on a regular basis) The accreditation body ensures that we are using heavily tested and certified products for our installs of which we only use FireTherm. This gives clients peace of mind that the products they are installed meet regulations and can actually provide a level of fire protection for their building. With plenty of evidence to reinforce this point. It s recommended in page 10 of the Approved Document B to use a Third-Party Accredtied installer. So make the responsible decision and use Evolutions Fire Protection for all your fire stopping needs. We offer a yearly inspection and maintenance package to ensure that our certified installations are still viable. This is as important as the original install as works are likely to be carried out which could cause damage or defects to our work of which our fire rating certification then becomes void. Getting yearly inspections are not only vital for the safety of your building and its occupants but it s the most responsible decision. 18
