Temperature The maximum temperature of the liquid pumped by S.E.S.C. pumps depends upon the conduction of heat along the shaft to the bearings, the characteristics of the liquid being pumped, the method of stuffing box sealing and the strength of the pump casing material. Care must be taken when selecting pumps and the method of stuffing box sealing on high temperature applic.ations since the properties of the liquid being pumped greatly affect the selection. For. example, liquids such as water, which have very high vapor pressures at high temperatures, also have non-lubricaling qualities and therefore are, not suitable for standard mechanical seals. The high pressure necessary to keep these liquids in a liquid state also places a definite limitation on which pumps and methods of sealing are suitable. On high temperature applications, the method of stuffing box sealing must also include provisions for cooling the liquid in the stuffing box and cooling the shaft to eliminate the conduction of heat along the shaft to the bearings. The following stuffing box sealing methods can be used, up to the temperatures listed. ' : This seal is the single internal or external type Crane Type 9 Seal. These seals can be installed in any SESC P ump. No modification of the standard stuffing box is required.", These seals cannot be applied to CNG or CNGK pumps which are built with jacketed boxes. The seals are so constructed that they can be installed either internally or ex.cernallv. (Refer below) SINGLE EXTERNAL CRANE TYPE 9 SEAL The external seal construction may be applied only when the pump has a solid shaft (no shaft sleeve). Therefore it can be applied to CNG and CNGK pumps without modification. SINGLE INTERNAL CRANE TYPE 9 SEAL The internal seal construction may be applied on any SESC pump, ievirdlef:s cf whett*r or not a sleeve construction or solid snaft construction is used. 2004-3 Page 14 Type 9 Seals END SUCTION CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS JOHN CRANE MECHANICAL SEALS New Limitations Pressure must not exceed 35 psig on an externally mounted type 9 seal or 150 psig on an internally mount'ed type 9 seal. Pressure limitations of type 9B internal seal far exceed those of pump. 2. Temperature of liquid being pumped must not exceed 300F unless a water-cooled stuffing box is used. (Care must be taken not to recommend coolihg when this would cause crystallization, freezing, or solidifying of the liquid being pumped.) 3. Do not offer these seals on liquids being pumped above their atmospheric boiling point without referring to Ampere. 4. Do not use these seals on hydrocarbons with a specific gravity of 0.63 or less 5. Do not use these seals where fine solids or crystals are present in the liquid being pumped. 6. Do not apply these seals where the corrosion rate on the metal selected is greater than 0.002 inches per year (IPY). If in doubt, consult Standard Pump Division, Sales Department. In addition these seals should not be used under the following conditions: A. Fluorine compounds, ar hydrofluosilicic acid- B. Solutions containing caustic soda. C. Nitric acid over 45% concentration. D. Chromic acid over 25% concentration. E. Oleum (100% or more sulfuric acid). F. Hydrogen peroxide over 15% concentration. For solutions which will not corrode the metal selected at a rate greater than 0.002 IPY, but which are listed in one of the exceptions "B" through "F" above, a John Crane Seal can be supplied which is slightly modified from the standard, but which is not carried in stock at Ampere. The variation in construction, and price difference are listed below. (Shipment on pumps with these modified seals will be 6-8 weeks where pump parts are available in 4 weeks or less; if mpre than 4 weeks are required to obtain pump parts, add 2 weeks for seal installation and test). Here the diameter, rotating speed and width of impeller determine the head and capacity of your pump. Shown above Is a typical bearing frame assembly. This type unit must be mounted on a base, driven either through a coupling by a motor, engine, or turbine, or by belt-drive arrangement. The bearing frame assembly not only supports the pump casing and the shaft and bearings it also provides a stable surface by which the pump is mounted to the base plate. These pumps are available either with packed stuffing boxes or with mechanical seals. The basic design of this pump allows for conversion from packed box operation to mechanical seal operation or vice-versa after the pump is installed, in the event that changes in the service condition make such a change necessary. They are standard bearings, available locally. Bearing protection Contaminants are excluded from bearings by a system of deflectors, covers, and lip seals. Specific construction varies depending on method of lubrication (oil or grease) and material of pump (alloy versus iron, steel and bronze). A centrifugal pump must not only transmit power from the driver to the impeller, but must also withstand the radial load imposed on the impeller because of radial reaction. All shafts in this line are designed to transmit the power required and to withstand the bending that would result from radial reaction forces if an Inadequate shaft were used. In fact, on all pumps up to 500 1313(n design capacity the force on the shaft under worst conditions causes less than 0.002 Inch deflection of the shaft at the face of the stuffing box. John Crane unbalanced internal type 9 seal. 20E-111133 Great care has been taken to design and build the selfpriming pump to minimize mechanical seal and packing maintenance. Shaft concentricity, with respect to the stuffing box, is assured by the precise machining of engaging parts. Shaft deflection is minimized and the shaft deflection at the face of the stuffing box will not exceed 0.002 inches. The outboard end of the stuffing box is faced and turned accurately to allow an easy and accurate conversion to mechanical seals. The self-priming pump will accommodate commer- cially available mechanical seals most widely used in Chemical and Process services. Inside and outside seals, balanced and unbalanced, single and double are available. Auxiliary fittings such as stuffing box throat bushings, lip seals, etc. are also available. The stuffing box incorporates tapped openings for four-gland studs. Mechanical seal glands use four studs, packing glands use two. Mechanical teal glands make use of confined gaskets thus maintaining a positive seal, for high-pressure applications. A jacketed stuffing box is available where heating or cooling of the packing or mechanical seal is desired. Mechanical Seal Selection.. The proper selection of a mechanical seal requires that specific information be made available. From a corrosion standpoint, there are more critical areas in a mechanical seal than in the pump itself. Where the application of a centrifugal pump depends upon the proper selection of one suitable material of construction, the application of a mechanical seal for the same service depends upon the selection of numerous materials of construction for the stationary face, seal ring, shaft packing and small parts, etc. Therefore in order to obtain the desired results from a mechanical seal, it is necessary that all of the factors which affect its operation be known. For proper selection the following data is considered necessary: Liquid temperature Suction pressure Specific gravity Viscosity at pumping temperature Presence of solids or other impurities Composition of the liquid Corrosive or abrasiive nature of the liquid The type of process or system of which the pump is a part The above information is in addition to the hydraulic data ordinarily supplied which is necessary to choose the correct pump.
