January 2006 President s Message -Jerry Kyle Thank you all for the great help and support you gave me in 2005. There was much accomplished and much pride to share with each other with what we have done together to promote this hobby we share and love. Being recognized as the president of this club which has earned a fine reputation among others in the AKCA is a distinct honor. We are recognized by more than you may realize outside our local area by what we are doing to promote our hobby. Thank you Camellia Koi Club Members. This year we will build on what we have started. Remembering that our mission is to promote the hobby of raising and showing koi we will once again have a fall koi show. In addition, this is a year we traditionally hold our semi annual public pond tour to raise money to help fund our activities. Inside this issue: President s Message 1 Pond Tour Update Treasurer s Report Ramblings Upcoming Koi Events Pictures from Koi Pond in Encinitas 2 3 Club Calendar 6 4-5 Our first meeting of the year will again be a planning session where we all come together to decide what we want to accomplish in 2006. We tried this last year and felt it was very successful as it got newcomers as well as old timers sharing new and old ideas. It was a time to ask questions and contribute. It was interesting and enjoyable. Some of the new Board of Directors have ideas to share but want to get your opinions on things to do, places to meet, and activities to enjoy. We will meet at Nanci Manceau s home and koi pond. For older members this will be a repeat treat. Newer members will see for the first time a pond that has been a previously featured pond tour location. There are many ideas to take away from this hillside pond including waterfall, bridge, paths, and observation points. If it rains we will easily fit in the great room just off the patio by the pond. If the sun shines we get it all. Please try to make this meeting so we can get your input. Enjoyment guaranteed. On page 3 I have posted places and dates of upcoming Bay Area and So-Cal Koi Shows from the KOI USA Calendar. Remember how proud we felt that people had come from far and wide to see our club s show in October? We appreciate it when people travel great distances to see our koi, it is one of the things that makes a show feel like a success. If your schedule allows, consider attending one of our fellow clubs shows and reciprocate the effort! -Ellen

Page 2 January 2006 Pond Tour Update - Dan Alarid As you may already be aware, the proposal for the two days is to establish a Sacramento grouping for Sacramento north to Auburn and its neighbor east/west location on one day, and the same for south Sac. to possibly as south to Lodi taking in so. east/west areas. We are looking at establishing 6 to 8 ponds for each day. At the last pond tour board meeting it was agreed that a ticket fee of $12 for one day and $20 for both days would be the charge for attending. Current Progress: I have already met with Steve Walker of Sac. Koi who has provided me with a list of seven potential ponds. John Hansen of Nimbus who as indicated to me that he would provide me with a list of perspective ponds by this coming Monday. Marco of Flora Tropicana in Elk Grove also indicates he can provide with a short list by Monday. Bill of Oh So Koi has also promised me some contacts from ponds he has built. One of which I will be taking a look at in Galt tomorrow. Jim Phillips has also provided me with three recommendations. By the middle of next week I expect to have a list of approximately 20 potential ponds to be reviewed. At that time I will need assistance from board/club members to assist me in reviewing these ponds for recommendations on final selections. Also we will probably need our board to get together to divide up review responsibility. Any club members who would like to have their ponds reviewed for selection are by all means welcome. Page 3 January 2006 Ramblings -by Jerry Kyle (Written for the www.camelliakoi.org web site for the public) A new year begins and already the excitement builds. No sooner have visions of sugarplums quit dancing in my head but they are replaced with visions of koi dancing in my head. It may seem corny but that s the way it is. The children who came to Uncle Jerry s house for Christmas were squealing with glee as the koi in the pond sucked on little fingers while eating out of little hands. The grown-ups marveled and asked the big question, When are you going to finish it? They are right. I ve been dreaming too long. It s time to get busy again. I have been working on this dream long enough. It was a lot of work digging a 10 x 18 hole in the back yard. That took time. Getting rid of the soil was no problem. Pile it in the front drive with a sign that says FREE SOIL and the dirt will disappear. Belonging to the Camellia Koi Club put me in contact with many who had ponds and were a wealth of information. Georgia had all sorts of stuff, Sandy had an extra skimmer, Jason had an extra bubble bead filter, Dan knew where to get great value on liner material, and Ken had an extra (still in the box) high efficiency pump. Along with making good friends and learning about raising and showing koi, belonging to the club has terrific financial advantages. These items cost me only a small part of what one would expect to pay at a pond supplier. For other items I found that at many of our local suppliers just mentioning that I belonged to the club got me instant discounts. It is extremely important in this hobby to belong to a club. You may meet someone like Bob who gave me koi to get started or you may meet someone like Jack who knew a friend who was moving and wanted to give seven mature koi to a good home. I feel blessed to have found this club and made such fine friends. This year I only need to finish the waterfall and put in the landscaping and the job is done. Then we will have an open house and invite all our fishy friends from the club to share our pride and our joy. It is an accepted axiom that if anyone is interested in building a pond that the first thing to consider is to join a club. No pond is perfect including this one and there is so much to learn from the successes and less than successes of others who are willing to share their knowledge and friendship. The Camellia Koi Club is more than just a club to me. It is a family. I love my family and can t wait to share my koi pond with them. Page 4 January 2006 Koi Vacation Pictures Ellen Evans In November while in San Diego for Thanksgiving, Kirk and I stopped to visit the Self Realization Fellowship Temple in Encinitas (25 mi. north of San Diego) to view their beautiful garden and magnificent koi ponds. I took the following pictures to share with the club. I highly recommend stopping there if you are planning to attend the Koi Club of San Diego s annual show (March 4-5). For more information, visit http://www.yogananda-srf.org/temples/encinitas/ If anyone would like to recommend another out-of-town public koi pond that is worth viewing, please email me at kde2@comcast.net and I will share it with the club in a future newsletter. The entrance to the meditation gardens invites you into a lush, green jungle of plants. Korean grass (Zoysia) forms solid blankets of velvety-looking groundcover. At the top of the stairs, to the right, are several overlooks with expansive ocean views. In most areas plants overhang the rim of the pond, giving the pond a beautiful, natural feeling. I wish they had signs up for koi geeks describing their filtration methods, water testing regimen, etc.! The gardens are very peaceful, and signs remind visitors from the general public to be respectful of those who come to meditate in the calm, quiet surroundings.

Page 5 January 2006 Koi Vacation Pictures continued from p. 4 The koi are large and colorful, and the water is crystal clear. There are 3 ponds and they are connected by a series of streams and waterfalls. Babies tears grows with an abundance I can only dream of achieving in my backyard. Do not be fooled by the seemingly peaceful co-existence of koi and waterlilies in this picture. Despite having lettuce to nibble on, the koi also enjoyed browsing on these large, round leaves. December 2005 Board of Director Minutes December 2005 and January 2006 Meeting minutes will be reported in the February Koi Ahoy.
