Did you take advantage of the month off? I did, my brother and I decided to run around Spain for a couple weeks visiting Madrid, Barcelona, Ibiza, and Mallorca. The highlight of the trip? Hmm, it would have to be one of the following beautiful beaches, beautiful people, amazing history and architecture, great seafood (have you ever eaten a razor clam they are amazing!), unbelievable Sangria, and an uncontrollable nightlife. Overall, it was a fantastic trip and I highly recommend visiting at least Barcelona. Now, back to reality and boy do we have a lot in store for you. Coming up September 9, we have our monthly meeting on Selection of Common Industrial Protocols and Discussion on FDT Open Instrumentation Standards. I strongly encourage you all to attend. Next, I would like to bring to your attention the upcoming ISA Orange County Tabletop show called AutomationOC this October 27, 2009. The show will include Exhibits, Presentations, Career Fair, and an Oktoberfest ambiance. This event is being held at the Old World Village in Huntington Beach. I am extremely excited about this show and anticipate a great turnout. This is the first OC show in a few years, please visit the website AutomationOC.com for information, Exhibitor Inquiries, Attendee Registration or contact info regarding event ideas or volunteer speakers. In addition, we will still be holding our October and November monthly meetings and of course the ever-popular X-Mas Cruise in the Long Beach harbor. ISA Orange County Section History of ISA Orange County Section by John C. Querido, P.E. Orange County Section was chartered as a spin-off of the Los Angeles Section on February 17, 1959. At that time the Los Angeles Section was heavily oriented toward the aerospace industry. A distinguished group of refinery, contracting engineer and vendor representatives started the new section to promote industrial measurement and control programs. This remains the primary orientation of the Orange County Section. Membership in the Section is the third largest of the eight sections in District 11. The member s professional classifications include end users, engineering consultants, suppliers, educators, students and retired personnel. We have Student Sections at California State University at Fullerton, California State University at Long Beach and Orange Coast College. Three of our members served as ISA National Presidents. Two of them are Dr. Arnold O. Beckman (1952) and Thomas J. Kehoe (1970). Dr. Beckman became an Honorary Member in 1959 and was presented the Life Achievement Award in 1981. The Arnold O. Beckman Founder Award is one of ISA s most prestigious technical awards. Dr. Beckman invented the ph analyzer and founded the company that grew into a major analytical instrument manufacturer. Don Zee of our Section was the 2005 ISA President. Many of our members have served ISA at the national level, either as district leaders or on industry or technical committees. As an example, Earl Montgomery served for many years as the Standards Committee Chair. Earl helped develop many of the new industry standards that help Control System Engineers do a better job. The current District 11 Vice President is Brad Rupert of the Northern California Section. The Orange County Section 2009-2010 Section President is Sebastian Zielonka, now serving a second term. Preceding Sebastian as Section President were the following individuals: 2009-2010 Sebastian Zielonka 2008-2009 Sebastian Zielonka 2007-2008 Craig Lanternier 2006-2007 Craig Lanternier 2005-2006 John C. History of the Orange County Section Continued from page 10 After 40+ years, we still continue to work closely with the Los Angeles Section. Each year we jointly sponsor technical meetings, tours, social events and an annual honorarium dinner. Moreover, the two sections jointly served as host sections when the ISA International Conference was held in Los Angeles in 1965 and in Anaheim in 1987, 1991, and 1994. We worked together to make these conventions a success. In 1987, the Orange County Section and Los Angeles Section teamed up with the Southern California Measurement Association to expand the annual SCMA Short Course into the annual SCMA / ISA Short Course & Exhibits. This event grew into the largest short course in the nation and was held each year until 1998. It made a major educational contribution to the measurement and control community. Our section was well represented on the Host Committee for the ISA Western Regional Conference & Exhibition, Chaired by Kim Miller Dunn of the Los Angeles Section. That event took place on June 18th & 19th, 2002 in Las Vegas. On April 23-24, 2004, the ISA Automation West Conference & Exhibition was held at the Long Beach Convention Center. John Querido was Host Chair, leading a Host Committee consisting of Los Angeles and Orange County members. Other Orange County Section members on this committee were Raj Adani, Publicity Chair; Don Zee, Finance Chair; Bob Harrison, Web Master and John Gong, Monitor Co Chair. This event was repeated as Automation West 2006 at the Long Beach Convention Center in the May 2006. The ISA Analytical Division held AD 2006, its annual symposium, in 2006 in Anaheim, California. John Querido is a member of this Division and was Symposium Chair for the Anaheim event. This symposium has been held in various cities in the US and Canada for a number of years and features state of the art papers on analyzer measurements and systems. The symposium was a successful event, with 140 paid attendees from many countries. Based on the success of the 2009 event, AD2011 will be held again in Anaheim with Sandra Krauthamer of the Los Angeles Section as Chair. Part of our history is related to 9/11, which took place during ISA 2001 in Houston. With airlines shut down, we out of town people had to find a way to get home. In typical style, Bis Mitra came to the rescue. Bis arranged for several ISA members to join him and two fellow employees in driving back to California in two Fluor Corporation rental cars. Kim Miller, of the Los Angeles Section, solved the luggage problem by filling the hatch back of the rental car she was driving. We left Houston on Thursday morning, September 13, stopped overnight in Las Cruces, New Mexico and arrived home late Friday night. There were ten of us in the three car convoy. Kim Miller and Susan Varalla were in Kim s car. Bis Mitra, Terry Sellers, Jeannie and Don Zee were in one Fluor car. Sara Sheldon, Albert Briones, John Querido and Alan McMurray were in the other. We were all happy to get home. In 1994 the board decided to honor Don Zee by naming the Orange County Section annual award the DON ZEE AWARD. We did so to recognize Don s outstanding dedication to our Section and ISA. Don has twice served as Section President, was District 11 Vice President for four years and for four years was ISA Treasurer. In 1998, Don was given the ISA Distinguished Society Service Award. Don served as ISA President for 2005. Past awardees are listed below: 2008 Craig Lanternier 2007 Victor Wegelin 2006 Sarah Sheldon 2005 Christine Dorgan 2004 Raj Adani 2003 Terry Sellers 2002 John Gong 2001 Bob Coel 2000 Jon R. Harrison 1990 Don Zee Moving into the 21 century In 1999 Bob Harrison was inducted as an ISA Fellow, ISA s highest level of membership, in recognition of his technical contributions to our industry. Bob has twice served as President of the Orange County Section and has served as our Web Master since the Orange County Section founded a Web Site. Bob teaches a control system course at California State University Fullerton and is active with our Student Section there. Pitsker - Life Achievement Award, Dr. Robert L. Moore - ISA Fellow. Dr. Moore was also awarded the Albert L. Sperry Founder Award at ISA Expo 2008 in Houston. Our Section received the Kates Award for Section Documentation in 1992, when it was prepared by Chris Smith and in 1993, when it was prepared by Earl Montgomery and we received it again in 1995. In 1998 we received a Section Performance Award for the section s educational activities. In 1999 we again received a Section Performance Award for Student Section activities. History of ISA Orange County Section Continued from page 11 the 1998 & 1999 awards for our section at the ISA National Conferences. Bis has made an outstanding contribution to our section as 1998-1999 President and in all the other board positions he has occupied. With Sarah Sheldon as our Section President, we received the ISA Gold Section Performance Award for the 2004-2005 term. John Querido, Section President, presented Sarah with the certificate for this award at our November 2005 meeting. Under Craig Lanternier s leadership the Orange County Section received a Section Performance Award for our 2006-2007 term. This was presented at EXPO 2007 in Houston. At this same meeting Romel S. Bhullar, a Fluor Corporation Fellow, was made an ISA Fellow and John C. Querido received the ISA Golden Achievement Award. Continued on next page Robert W. At ISA EXPO 2009, to be held in Houston, our Section will receive another Section Performance Award for our financial support of two of our Student Sections that are active in robotic competions. At this meeting Fluor Corporation will also be honored with the ISA Corporate Section Support Award in recognition of ongoing support of the Orange County Section. And Larry Barone of South Coast Systems will be inducted as an ISA Fellow. Orange County Section has planned memorable programs. In 1964-65, when process computers were in their infancy, Howard Ingber put together a very successful meeting series on this topic. In 1968-69, Harlan Hughes organized a ten-meeting program on pollution control. In 1994-95, Ron Kaiser developed an outstanding two meeting series on PLC vs. DCS that was held as joint meeting with the Los Angeles Section. In 1995-96, Earl Montgomery focused on the Field Bus issue and it s relationship to the future of measurement and control. Early in 2000, we had a successful high tech presentation and exhibit night. Last year (2004-2005) Carl Hoffman was our Program Chair. He developed a series of state of the art programs. Sarah Sheldon, in addition to serving as Past President, took on that Chair for 2005-2006 and provided interesting, well attended topics. We have continued to provide advanced technology to our members at well attended monthly meetings. Each year we sponsor two or more half-day education symposia on measurement and control technology. John Pooler, as Education Chair, concentrated on Open Systems. John Gong succeeded him. John covered a number of high tech topics, mostly state of the art software, over a period of several years. John s outstanding activities resulted in the section receiving a Section Performance Award in 1998. In 2003-2004 Tim Ton was Education Chair. For the last three years John again served in this important position. In February 2007 we broke ground with a new concept by having an Orange County Section/Analysis Division Education Seminar. John Gong chaired the Symposium. John Querido arranged for the AD 2006 Host Committee to develop the program. Paul Ottemann arranged for Robert Sherman, ISA Fellow and an authority on sample conditioning, to be our speaker. The symposium was a success with 25 attendees. A side benefit was, with a two tier member/non member registration fee, we recruited four new ISA members. In our annual Section Performance Award submittal we used a write up of this event to solicit a special Section Performance Award and were successful. We are proud of our Section s contribution to our technical field. We invite you, as a member, to help us continue this legacy. August 2009 ISA Newsletters, Southern District 11 13
