Senior Staff held their weekly meeting on Tuesday, June 23 rd at Headquarters Station 31. On Wednesday, June 24 th, the negotiations teams, VRFA and Local 1352, began work on the Firefighters & Captains and Battalion Chiefs & Fire Marshal labor contracts, which will become effective January 1, 2016. Senior Staff and the Local 1352 Executive Board met on Wednesday, June 24 th for Labor Management Meeting. Director Horaski & DC Day continued to work on implementation of TeleStaff scheduling software on Wednesday, June 24 th at Headquarters Station 31. DC Swearingen and DC Day attended the City of Auburn Emergency Management Committee meeting on Thursday, June 25 th at One Main Street. Administrator Robertson attended the retirement reception for Chief Jerry Thorson of East Pierce Fire & Rescue on Thursday, June 25 th in Bonney Lake. HR Manager Borden will administer the examination for the development of the Deputy Fire Marshal eligibility list on Monday, June 29 th at Station 34. Senior Staff will hold their weekly meeting on Tuesday, June 30 th Headquarters Station 31. at The Administrative Offices of the VRFA will be closed in observance of Independence Day on Friday, July 3 rd. 911 Requests for Services / Customer Service: Commercial Fire: (Auburn) On Monday, June 22 nd at 6:30 p.m., firefighters responded to a reported apartment fire. Arriving firefighters found that the cooking fire had been extinguished by the occupant with a fire extinguisher. Firefighters performed a search, checked for extension, ventilated the structure and assisted the fire investigator. Aid Call: (Algona) On Tuesday, June 23 rd at around 1:50 p.m., firefighters responded to an elderly female complaining of pain in her legs. The patient was examined on scene before being transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center (MAMC) via private ambulance. Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Wednesday, June 24 th at 12:46 p.m., crews were dispatched to an adult female complaining of an abdominal problem. Firefighters and paramedics from King County Medic One evaluated and treated the female. She was transported to MAMC by private ambulance for further treatment. Aid Call: (Pacific) On Thursday, June 25 th at 7:48 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to assist an elderly female with a diabetic problem. Firefighters and King County Medics treated the patient on scene. The patient was left at the scene after she was stabilized. Aid Call: (Algona) On Friday, June 26 th at 4:57 p.m., firefighters were called to an elderly female who had fallen and hit her head. Firefighters treated the patient and she was transported to MAMC by private ambulance. Commercial Fire: (Auburn) On Saturday, June 27 th at 6:47 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to a reported apartment fire. Arriving firefighters found one unit on fire with flames spreading into the attic. Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire from the outside, then made entry to completely extinguish the blaze. A search was completed, firefighters also checked for fire extension into the adjoining units. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. 2
Aid Call: (Auburn) On Sunday, June 28 th at 11:13 p.m., firefighters and King County Medics responded to the 2800 block of Auburn Way North for a young adult male who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The patient was evaluated and treated at the scene then transported in stable condition to Harborview Medical Center by King County Medics and VRFA personnel for further evaluation and treatment. Training Division Activities: Year 2014 2015 Weekly 256 143 Year to Date 8,240 9,098 Block 4 Training: The South King Fire Training Consortium (SKFTC) completed the final week of live fire training. This training is a hybrid, combining simulations with real work. A command officer located away from the drill ground assigned tasks to units based on what they saw in the simulation. The firefighters carried out their assignments on the drill ground and in the training tower. Tasks include fire suppression, ventilation, search, RIT and other fireground functions. In addition to the fireground training, the training division exercised the new Zone 3 rehabilitation policy (draft). All participants were run through a formal rehab procedure both pre and post drill. The drill was a resounding success and we received a lot of very good feedback. Four hundred twenty firefighters received this training. Blue Card Command Training: On Friday, June 26 th, training staff delivered incident command training that is a part of the continuing education component for their Blue Card IC certification. Certification requires 36 hours of continuing education that is a combination of online training and simulation training in each department s command training center (CTC). Certified instructors take each IC through predetermined building type and guide them through the process of managing building fires safely and effectively. Public Education PIEO Staff taught a Hands Only CPR class to a group of residents at Auburn Court Apartments. This was the second module of three in the new Older Adult Program being piloted at Auburn Court. PIEO Staff met with a pre-teen boy and his mother regarding a fire he was involved with in early June. He was referred to the Juvenile Fire Stoppers program by the VRFA fire investigator. PIEO Staff taught two live fire extinguisher classes to 70 employees at TTF Aerospace. PIEO Staff participated in the Kids Safety Day at Showare Center in Kent. Children from all over King County and their families got to meet Sparky the Fire Dog, Pluggie the Robot and learn about water safety and how to properly fit a life jacket. A press release was issued regarding fireworks and how to safely celebrate Independence Day. Information was shared on the VRFA Facebook and Twitter pages regarding the excessive heat and how to avoid heat related illness. Fire Investigation There were 4 incidents requiring the services of the Fire Investigation Unit this week. On Monday, June 22 nd, an undetermined fire occurred outside of a residence in the 1900 block of 62 nd St SE, Auburn. The fire involved an Arborvitae tree located directly adjacent to the garage. Fire involvement was limited to the plants and the garage siding. Dollar loss was estimated to be approximately $2,000. On Tuesday, June 23 rd, an accidental kitchen fire occurred in an apartment in the 1000 block of 18 th St NE in Auburn. The fire was a result of unattended cooking by the resident. Dollar loss was estimated to be approximately $10,000. On Wednesday, June 24 th, an accidental fire occurred in a large piece of equipment at the Boeing facility. The fire was confined to the machinery and its ventilation system. Dollar loss has yet to be determined. 5
On Saturday, June 27 th, a fire occurred on a balcony in the 1400 block of 8 th St NE, Auburn. The fire was confined to the balcony and roof with no interior involvement of the apartments. The fire is still under investigation. Planning and Logistics P&L received six apparatus and five facility/small tool maintenance requests. P&L is working with vendors and the Operations Division to put the newly purchased brush rig in service. Annual testing is being conducted on Ladder 31 by Rosenbauer and Underwriters Laboratories. Scott Air Pack will be re-coating our SCBA cylinders in the near future. P&L is working on the logistics of the re-coat process for the cylinders. 6
