I. Pre-Installation The application of this temperature control is limited to hydronic or service water heating (Model HHK-1872) or chilled water cooling (Model CWK-1872) when used with an EarthLinked Heating and Cooling System and storage water heater or storage water tank as described in this manual. The temperature control kit consists of the items listed in the following table: DESCRIPTION Temperature Control (ETI # THAQ) (Johnson # A419GBF-1C) PTC Silicon Sensor with PVC Cable (ETI # THSS) (Johnson # A99BB-200C) QUANTITY 1 1 Immersion Well (ETI # THAQW) (Johnson # WEL11A-601R) 1 Packet of Thermal Transfer Compound (ETI # THAQHTC) 1 Packet of Leak Lock Liquid Sealant (ETI # LLS-01) 1 Screws (#10 x 3/8) (ETI # SCRM-10-06) 2 NOTE: A field supplied roll of ½ wide Teflon tape will be required. The A419 control is a single-stage, electronic temperature control with a Single-Pole, Double- Throw (SPDT) output relay. It features a lockable front-panel touchpad for setup and adjustment, and a LCD screen for viewing the temperature and status of other functions. An LED indicates the controls output relay On/Off status. The A419 control has heating and cooling modes, adjustable setpoint and differential, an adjustable anti-short cycle delay, and a temperature offset function. The range is -30 F to 212 F (-34 C to 100 C). The Sensor Wire length is 6.5 ft. For more information on the A419 Temperature Control, see the A419 Series Electronic Temperature Controls manual. II. Installation IMPORTANT! READ THESE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY BEFORE PROCEEDING TO INSTALL! HHK/CWK-KIT (02/16) 4
WARNING! BEFORE REMOVING ANY ACCESS PANELS AND INITIATING ANY PHASE OF THIS INSTALLATION, MAKE SURE THAT POWER IS TURNED OFF TO ALL EARTHLINKED AND FIELD SUPPLIED SYSTEM COMPONENTS. FAILURE TO DO SO COULD RESULT IN PROPERTY DAMAGE, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. WARNING! WEAR ADEQUATE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND PRACTISE ALL APPLICABLE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHILE INSTALLING THIS EQUIPMENT. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN EQUIPMENT AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE, PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH. The Temperature Control may be located on the Storage Tank or on a nearby wall as shown in Figure 1. Make sure that there is sufficient Sensor Wire length between the Temperature Control and the Tank Sensor insertion point on the Storage Tank. Note the typical sensor insertion points on the Storage Tank for chilled water and heated hydronic water in Figure 1. Figure 1 - Locating the Temperature Control HHK/CWK-KIT (02/16) 5
CAUTION! Locate and mount the temperature control AFTER water lines have been connected to the storage water heater and tested to ensure there is no water leakage. Locate the temperature control so that it is NOT under a water connection to the side of the storage water heater. When fastening the temperature control to the outer shell of the storage water heater or to a wall, use the top two mounting holes only. Use screws in all four holes may affect the control calibration and operation. Fasten the temperature control using the two #10 X /3/8 screws provided. Avoid driving screws near wires located under the storage water heater shell. As illustrated in Figure 2, apply Teflon tape to the threads on the Immersion Well and the bushing. In addition, apply the Leak Lock liquid sealant over the Teflon tape to ensure a water tight seal. Insert and tighten the bushing first. After the bushing is tightened, insert the Immersion Well into the bushing and tighten it. Figure 2 - Installing the Tank Sensor HHK/CWK-KIT (02/16) 6
Next, prepare the tank sensor assembly for insertion in to the immersion well following these steps and the illustration in Figure 3. 1. Using a straight slot screwdriver, loosen the set screw at the top of the immersion well. 2. Thread the spring, then the bushing, into the tank sensor lead as shown in Figure 3. 3. Thoroughly and completely coat the tank sensor with the thermal paste provided. 4. Insert tank sensor, spring and bushing into the immersion well, so that at least one half of the bushing is inserted into the well. The bushing will compress the spring. When properly coated, excess thermal paste should come out of the immersion well as the coated tank sensor assembly is being inserted. 5. Tighten the set screw against the bushing. Wipe away excess thermal paste. Figure 3 - Tank Sensor Assembly III. Setting the Temperature IMPORTANT! Consult the appropriate CLASSIC or PRIME field wiring diagram and the A419 Series Electronic Temperature Controls Manual starting on page 9 to set the appropriate temperature control operating parameters. Prior to setting the temperature on the temperature control, attach a thermocouple to the heat exchanger outlet and insulate it. Read this temperature when adjusting the temperature control set point temperature. HHK/CWK-KIT (02/16) 7
1) Hydronic Heating Set the temperature control for approximately 150⁰F and start the system to heat water. Partially open the storage water heater outlet valve so heated water slowly flows out of the tank. As outlet water temperature increases, measured by the thermocouple, adjust the temperature setting (the dial on the temperature control) to turn the compressor unit off when outlet water temperature is 5⁰F higher than the desired water temperature. For example if the desired hot water temperature is 105⁰F, the temperature control should shut the compressor unit off when the water outlet temperature at the heat exchanger reaches 110⁰F. IMPORTANT! Maximum Hot Water Temperature is 110⁰F Minimum Chilled Water Temperature is 42⁰F Both temperatures should be measure at the outlet of the Heat Exchanger 2) Chilled Water Cooling Set the temperature control for approximately 35 o F and start the system to chill water. Partially open the storage water heater outlet valve so chilled water slowly flows out of the tank. As outlet water temperature decreases, measured by the thermocouple, adjust the temperature setting (the dial of the temperature control) to turn the compressor unit off when outlet water temperature is 5 o F lower than the desired water temperature. For example, if the desired chilled water temperature is 47 o F, the temperature control should shut the compressor unit off when the water outlet temperature at the heat exchanger reaches 42 o F.
