Case Study: Lewes District Council In addition to the contract, Burleys commitment to social responsibility and the community means we go the extra mile. Contributing in a number of positive ways, Burleys have participated in bringing colour to Newhaven Railway Station, the Clean for the Queen event, picking fruits for local food banks and many more. Burleys were initially awarded a one year contract with Lewes District Council to cover the period whilst a new contract was being procured. Subsequently, Burleys was awarded a 8 year contract which commenced 1st April 2015. The contract awarded to Burleys was a traditional parks contract spread over a wide area, incorporating the towns of Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford, as well as the historic county town of Lewes. The scope of works included in this contract are as follows: Large and small open space grass cutting (weekly & fortnightly cylinder mown). Maintenance of shrub beds and planted areas. Supply, installation and maintenance of seasonal bedding displays. Parks and open space patrol duties with litter collection; full-time park attendance. Full maintenance of winter and summer sports facilities including football pitches, cricket pitches, bowling greens, tennis courts and hard surface sports areas. Maintenance of small formal / ornamental gardens. Hedge cutting; grass cutting to banks using a remote control bank mower. Full cemetery maintenance including grave preparation and attendance. Management of sports bookings and revenue collection. An emergency / reactive response service with a dedicated team. Growing success in Newhaven The Newhaven railway station initiative was a joint venture between Burleys, Southern Railway and Paradise Park Garden Centre, in which the railway was brought to life. The teams created a new welcoming arrival into the town with a selection of colourful planters across the station. The plants were locally sourced, donated by Paradise Park Garden Centre. I d like to thank Burleys for their co-operation and time. This wouldn t have been possible without them. It s been a very gratifying experience to have worked with Burleys, Southern Railway, Paradise Park Garden Centre and N.T.C in achieving a floral lift for an overlooked local transport link. Simon Barnes, Newhaven Town Councillor Clean for the Queen The Clean for the Queen event contributed to the event organised for the Monarch s 90th birthday later on this year. Working with Newhaven Town Council and Southern Railway, Burleys teams helped with litter picking, clearing areas of rubbish, and strimming and clearing bracken. The works were well-received by the local council, and the team had a fantastic day transforming the area in the Sussex fishing town. Burleys were delighted to take part in this special event to mark the Queen s 90th birthday. There was a real sense of pride and commitment from Newhaven Town Council, Southern Railways and Burleys, who all made the day a real success Mark Tavener, Burleys Contract Manager. Fruits of our labour Following a bumper crop of fruit, Burleys in partnership with Lewes District Council were tasked with picking the fruit and distributing them to the local food bank. An incentive fully supported by Lewes District Council, Burleys can help locally grown produce to be distributed in the community. This is a great way of engaging with the community and enforces our commitment to going that extra mile in helping our community, to be more sustainable and enhancing the environment we live in. Mark Tavener, Contract Manager. 7
