Modern automation systems can offer high quality and affordable solutions to ship owners wishing to invest in a new fleet or upgrade their current one. In fact, investments in marine automation can contribute to significant savings in operating costs (e.g. fuel), while enhancing the accuracy and the efficiency in the execution of tasks, thus improving navigation safety standards. At the same time, they can provide answers to important needs including: easy installation, smooth operation, compatibility with all kinds of transmitters, large data volume storage capacity and compliance with the standards of shipping authorities. Photo from Siemens archive Solution Stavros Kassidiaris S.A., a Controls & Automation (C&A) company in Piraeus, Greece, leveraged Siemens cutting-edge marine automation technology to design an advanced, high-quality monitoring and alarm system for navigation purposes, fit for new installations or for the replacement of older systems. The new system is able to incorporate more than 1,000 sensors to the ship s basic units and systems (main engine, turbochargers, diesel generators, boilers, pumps, air compressors, tanks, cargo holds, auxiliary engines, freezers, power distribution switchboards, fire detection etc.). With these sensors the system collects, stores and processes critical operational data regarding temperature, pressure, level, main engine r.p.m., consumption etc. The system consists of the central processing unit (Simatic S7300), one or more monitoring stations, one or more printers, as well as one or more compact remote monitoring stations (Simatic Panels TP1777, KTP1000). It is equipped with a UPS unit to ensure smooth operation. The processing of the collected data is able to provide the ship s captain, the Chief mechanic, as well as the ship
owner with a comprehensive and credible view of ship s condition at any time, through the screen of a computer at the ship s bridge, the engine room or the maritime company s central offices. Benefits The new Kassidiaris Siemens monitoring & alarm system enables significant savings in fuel and lubricant consumption at the main engine, while improving its performance. Additionally, it provides improved power generation and transmission management from the auxiliary engines and the generators. Moreover, the system increases the boilers efficiency level and helps in the prevention of serious damages or delays due to malfunctions. The processing of historical data can also offer the ship owner valuable guidance regarding their next steps or corrective actions, so as to significantly grow their company s competitive advantage. This monitoring & alarm system is necessary especially for older ships with obsolete and unreliable equipment. It is simple to use and highly efficient, it does not require a significant capital investment and provides an instant return, offering considerable compensatory benefits. Furthermore, the system offers significant environmental benefits, as it contributes to energy savings, the reduction of marine and air pollution, the reduction of thermal radiation and last but not least greater navigation safety. Stavros Kassidiaris S.A., Controls & Automation (C&A) The company is active in the marine automation industry since 1978. It has approximately 50 employees of various specializations, among which electrical and electronic engineers, automation applications specialists, as well as experts in the development, the manufacturing and the marketing of automation equipment. The company has provided quality services on Electrical, Electronic, Pneumatic and Hydraulic Automation Systems in the Naval and Industrial sectors. In addition, the company has successfully installed 80 similar monitoring & alarm systems, while its Technical Support Department offers its services on a 24 hour basis, 7 days a week, around the world.
