Description The Cedars is a well-known and historic house with only a few owners since it was originally constructed in 1780. Now an imposing Georgian fronted house, the property was originally three separate cottages (circa 16 th century) that were joined together and extended to create the majority of the house that now stands. The construction throughout is of a timber frame with a brick skin and occupies three storeys. The Cedars has been in the current ownership for the last 11 years and during this time it is has been painstakingly and sympathetically restored in most parts whilst retaining many of the original features such as sash windows throughout, with full length floor to ceiling windows in many of the principle rooms along with the original wooden fitted shutters. A number of the original fireplaces have been exposed and restored in the majority of the rooms along with the coving and plasterwork. In parts, accurate bespoke replacements have been installed to replace some of the missing original features. Charming features still remain such as the silver safe, lead lined work top in the butler s room, meat safe, a surface water well and a number of now blocked up secret passage ways that would have been
used by the maids to go about unnoticed. The principal rear rooms enjoy balconies overlooking the large rear garden. Current Condition Our client has carried out significant renovation works to the property, including re-wiring, plumbing, window replacement/refurbishment etc. throughout. Please call us to discuss this in more detail. History Dating back to 1780 in its current layout. Privately owned and occupied until about 1850, then sold and used first as a school, then solicitors' offices until about 1902 when it was purchased by the Taylor family of the neighbouring Manor House for use as a doctors' surgery for the benefit of the town. The house became known as The Doctor's House and is still known as such by the older residents of Diss. The senior doctor and his family lived in the house over the surgery premises until the practice moved to the newly built health centre in the 1970s. The senior doctor's family continued to live in the house until his surviving elderly wife eventually moved out in 2003. The house was then sold to the current owners, the first owner-occupiers for over 150 years. The Coach House The coach house was added on 1850 and with 2 doors offers room for at least 2/3 vehicles with a service pit. In front of the coach house and behind the large wooden gates is a parking area with ample space for several vehicles. Above the coach house is a hay store which was home to many a groom and still has excellent hand carved dates of the occupants who lived and worked there. Outside The Cedars fronts onto Mount Street and enjoys a large private rear garden of approximately 1.3 acres that is laid to lawn with a number of small trees, an orchard, and a very large Cedar tree, which is where the name The Cedars derives from.
