Applications Lambda probes at the focus of exhaust emission legislation Lambda probe on-board diagnostics (OBD) must be capable of identifying aging effects and defects in the lambda probe in good time i.e. before the probe is no longer in a position to deliver the signals needed for emission-relevant functions in the vehicle (e.g. mixture control, catalyst diagnosis). IAV Primero makes it easy for developers to distort the complex processing of lambda probe signals. It is capable of providing the engine control system s OBD algorithms with an lambda probe signal modified on the basis of freely configurable fault patterns. Here, the lambda probe s signal path is manipulated at vehicle level without the need for any intervention in engine control functions. The benefi t is obvious: the efficacy of on-board diagnosis can be verifi ed in its unchanged volume production state and demonstrated within vehicle homologation. IAV Primero assists engineers throughout the OBD development process: Algorithm development Calibration Vehicle homologation (OBD demonstration) Simplifying development work saves time and money: Minimized use of reference sensors (no retooling work involved anymore). Complex faults that cannot be reproduced with reference sensors are also easy to demonstrate. Selected fault patterns and their parameters are easily saved, providing reproducibility and reusability. Benefits at a glance: Support of a large number of lambda probes Large number of userconfigurable fault patterns Scalable to the needs of vehicle projects Configurable for OBD demonstrations within vehicle homologation Compact and robust design for in-vehicle use Fast, flexible customized upgrades 4
How IAV Primero Works Third-generation fault simulation Versatile and flexible it is easy to integrate IAV Primero into the signal integrate into the signal path between lambda probe and engine management system through the universal cable harness in any vehicle environment. An IAV Primero can be used for operating one linear sensor and binary sensor each simultaneously. The unit is conveniently confi gured and controlled via the user interface from a laptop connected to IAV Primero by USB. The CAN interface provided permits seamless integration of the data generated by IAV Primero into the existing calibration environment (for example, ETAS INCA). IAV Primero is fully backward compatible with all sensor models and control units that have so far been supported by previous device generations. Signal Curves and Fault Patterns Wide range of fault patterns IAV Primero provides a convenient and fl exible way of quickly simulating various fault patterns in the lambda probe signal. This makes it possible to test and enhance the OBD algorithms implemented in the engine control unit in a volume production state. The fault patterns can be confi gured in any way. Low pass Delay Low pass Symmetric Delay Symmetric (Maintain transition) Low pass Asymmetric (Rising edge) Delay Symmetric (Abrupt transition) Low pass Asymmetric (Falling edge) Delay Asymmetric (Maintain transition) Offset Delay Asymmetric (Abrupt transition) Offset Delay Asymmetric (Soft transition) Original signal Distorted signal Further fault patterns Heater faults Cable faults (short circuits, breaks, transfer and series resistances) Characteristic curve trimming Conditioning Gain Limitation Manipulation of internal resistances of binary sensors Further functions Sensor operability: IAV Primero comes with a function that provides fl exibility in confi guring sensor operability detection. User Interface Flexibility and intuitive operation for every user The graphic user interface makes IAV Primero easy and particularly convenient to use. The advantage lies in the ease of calibration and precise adaptation for specimc vehicle projects. Eight lambda probes can be controlled simultaneously through the graphic user interface. Providing three user modes, the operating software offers the right interface for every user. User modes at a glace Expert mode Custom mode Demonstration mode The expert mode provides full access to all of IAV Primero s functions and administration of the other user modes. The custom mode permits access to predefi ned fault patterns with online adaptation of the parameters needed during the OBD development process. Compared to the expert mode, this mode provides a limited range of functions, making operation easier during a demonstration. Straightforward and intuitive IAV Primero s user interface 7
