In the Ordnance Survey F ield Name Books, a number of variations are listed. Older versions of the place name in approximate chronological order from the 17th Century include: Kiltyernan, Killternan Parish, Kilturnan and Ballibetagh, Killturnan and Ballybetagh and Killternann. The researchers of the Ordnance Survey place name division recorded the following versions of the name in use in the early 19 th Century: Cill Tigearnain, Kieltiernan, Kiltiernan and Kilternan. In this Local Area Plan the version of Kiltiernan is used based on the spelling that has been used by the Ordnance Survey since 1837. iv
