The meeting was called to order by Co-President Valerie Wales at 6:30 p.m. Members present: 36, 1 guest May Meeting Notes The minutes of the April 12, 2018 meeting were included in the recent newsletter which all members received via email. There being no corrections or additions, the minutes were approved. Treasurer Virginia Schmidt reported a checkbook balance of $5,287.09, which includes plant pre-sales but not expenses. Committee Reports: Rose Skipper reported that the plant sale is underway and asked if there was anyone who could help with setup and cleanup on the day of the sale. She distributed Kollman s vouchers to those who purchased hanging baskets. Horticulture Show Karen Fullerman and Marlene Hatton presented the rules for the horticulture show to be held on July 14, 2018. The title of the show is Rustic Roots to Twinsburg Today. Fieldtrips: 5/18 & 19 - Sand casting at Ada s 6/8 - Mt. Vernon 6/23 - Bible Walk and Gardens - Mansfield 6/27 - Ronald McDonald House, Rainbow and Wellness Garden Old Business: Adelle Nyzaka thanked everyone who contributed items for the VFW luncheon. Sue Davis reported that the Native Plant Program was a huge success. Announcements: Adelle Nyzaka reported on a fundraiser by a high school science teacher at THS. On her birthday, instead of gifts, people will donate to four non-profit groups, one of which is the Twinsburg Garden Club. Scholarship: The annual TGC Scholarship for 2018 was presented to Abby Ratters for $2,000, plus $500 to Andrew Yates, last year s recipient, who has received excellent grades and remains in his major of Environmental Science. The next meeting will be held on June 21 at 6:30 pm which is the third Thursday instead of the second. The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 pm. FEED OHIO PROJECT Our Feed Ohio donation this month will go to Temple Israel Ner Tamid to help them feed the homeless. Please bring jars of smooth peanut butter (not crunchy) and jam or preserves (not jelly) to the meeting. The congregants make sandwiches every Friday night after their services to distribute to the homeless and homeless shelters that same night. Your contribution will be greatly appreciated!! Members of the Twinsburg VFW will be at the meeting to sell tickets for their annual raffle. The tickets are $10.00 each and will include a year of monthly drawings. Please support our local VFW. GARDEN TOUR TICKETS Pre-sale tickets for the Garden Tour will be available at the meeting. We are asking each member to purchase at least two tickets. Plant Sale Shoppers lined up once again outside the barn waiting for the doors to open for our Annual Plant Sale, our biggest fundraiser of the year. A beautiful sign created by Kristen Beason (right) welcomed everyone. A huge display of annuals, perennials, vegetables, hanging baskets, floral arrangements and garden art was beautifully arranged for the shoppers. Many of the plants were from the gardens of our own members, dug up and potted with the help of their fellow TGC gardeners. Several members donated containers to use for potting plants. All members were asked to participate in some way. Even the Historical Society helped out by cleaning out the barn and then stopping in to see if we needed anything. They even asked the 25 people attending their meeting that morning to check out our plant sale. A special thank you goes out to all who helped to make this event a huge success once again and especially to Rose Skipper, chairperson and Virginia Schmidt, cochairperson of the Plant Sale for doing such a fantastic job coordinating the event. It couldn t have been done without the work of each and everyone who participated. Although our proceeds were slightly less than last year, we did well and our profit of $3,220.00 will benefit our Scholarship Fund and other community projects. Birthday Partys Golden Girl Founder sees two community groups to 50th milestone In 2013 Marge Percy (left) addressed the Twinsburg City Council and guests at its May 28 meeting after the Twinsburg Historical Society received a proclamation commemorating its 50th anniversary. Mayor Katherine Procop acknowledged the Twinsburg Garden Club s golden anniversary with a proclamation that evening as well. On June 10th TGC members Sue Davis, Marianne Pieramici and Gail Takacs joined friends and family of Marge Percy to help her celebrate her 96th birthday. Marge is a founding member of both the Twinsburg Historical Society and the Twinsburg Garden Club and remained active in both organizations well into her 90 s. She can tell many stories about how Twinsburg grew from a farming community into a city. Percy was a wife, mother and kindergarten teacher when she and her husband, Ed, became very involved in that transformation. Marge served as president of both organizations over the years and it was during her tenure as president of the Historical Society that she conceived of the idea for the Mail Pouch logo to be painted on the side of the Freeman Barn. She is very proud that this logo has become a well-known city landmark. She is also proud of playing a part in starting the garden club, which was originally called the Grow and Show Garden Club whose primary interest was flower arranging. The club has grown considerably since it began and has branched off in many garden related directions. Both organizations are very grateful for Percy s early leadership and support throughout the years. Even though she now lives in Hudson, her heart remains in Twinsburg. Twinsburg Garden Club, along with several other local organizations, was invited to set up a table at Nora Suder-Riley s 50th birthday party on May 18th. She then asked her guests to donate or buy raffle tickets from each organization instead of buying her gifts. TGC received $160.00 in donations and Nora joined our club.
