Fire Prevention Week 2018 Poster Contest Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 fire that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871. We have the opportunity to involve Peterborough students in helping us to promote Fire Prevention week and Fire Safety and Prevention all year round. Contestants are challenged to exercise their creativity and submit a poster promoting one of three themes provided. The posters will be judged at the Fire Station Headquarters located at 210 Sherbrooke Street. Prizes will be awarded on the recommendation of the judges, whose decision will be final. On notification of having been selected as a winner and/or finalist the artist agrees to the full and exclusive non profit use of the art work by Peterborough Fire Services. The contests will be divided into four categories: Senior grades 10, 11, 12; Intermediate grades 7, 8 and 9; Junior grades 4, 5 and 6; and Primary grades 1, 2 and 3. Sound the Alarms Peterborough Take the Pledge Promote our Take the Pledge Survey at www.peterboroughfireservices.ca Promote the Sound the Alarms program where Residents can tell us their smoke and CO alarms work by visiting our website. Every month we draw a name from the pledges and they receive a FREE Prize Package. 2. Look. Listen. Learn. Fire Prevention Week Theme https://www.nfpa.org/fpw/about.html This year s FPW campaign, Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere, works to educate people about three basic but essential steps to take to reduce the likelihood of having a fire and how to escape safely in the event of one: LOOK for places fire could start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them. LISTEN for the sound of the smoke alarm. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from the home and where everyone should know to meet. LEARN two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter All entries are to be submitted to: Amanda Nichols, Public Educator, Peterborough Fire Services 210 Sherbrooke Street, Peterborough K9J 2N3 Candidates will complete an official Registration Form available from Peterborough Fire Services or on our website www.peterboroughfireservices.ca 3
