Wednesday, May 9, 2012: Course Descriptions: E007 Installing and Servicing Electronic Access Control Systems (P-40) Instructor: Chuck Dixon, CML This class is designed to give an overview of electronic access control. The class will emphasize tools, equipment, and circuits. We will assemble basic circuits and look at troubleshooting. By the end of this class students should have a working knowledge of beginning electronic access control installation and troubleshooting. Students are encouraged to bring their own digital volt ohm meter, multi-tip screw driver, pocket screwdriver, needle nose pliers, and wire strippers. Prerequisite: Basic electricity class or an understanding of Ohm s law, Watt s law, and basic electrical circuits. Lab Fee $20.00 for Learning About Electronic Locks. PRP Section L-40 will be offered after class. ALOA Members - $25.00 & Non-Members - $30.00. B003 Alternative Entry Techniques Instructor: David Thielen, CML This class deals with the last resort techniques and theory of cylinder bypass methods. Demonstrations of bypass techniques covering some of the most popular residential and commercial locksets will be performed. Discussion and presentations will also include narrow stile locks, tubular key locks, lever locks, Safe Deposit locks, interchangeable core cylinders, padlocks, templating for drilling high security rim and mortise cylinders and office equipment. Students will learn to perform bypass techniques that can be used to open a wide variety of locks and locking devices. The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP section L-00. B012 Life Safety Codes w/ada (P-07) Instructor: Edward A. Hite, CML, CFDI This is a must class for the locksmith/security professional of the 21st Century. The areas covered will include the new International Building Code, IBC 2006 Chapters 3, 4, 10 & 11. The National Fire Protection Association, NFPA 80-2007, NFPA 101-2006, Underwriters Laboratories product listings, and ADA Act of 1990. Each student will leave with a clear understanding of how the building and fire codes work. Each student will receive a manual for a future reference guide. Lab Fee $45.00 for the class manual. Thursday, May 10, 2012: E011 Closed Circuit TV Design & Installation Course (day 1 of 2) Instructor: Chuck Dixon, CML 16 hours This class covers a range of CCTV equipment and installation techniques including types of cameras, types of lenses, calculating light requirements, uses for each, mounts and housings, wire and cable, connectors, monitors, Digital Video Recorders(DVR) and system design. The second day of the class includes a hands-on installation of a multi-camera and monitoring CCTV system including DVR, remote monitoring and integrating into a networked access control system. Upon completion of the class students will have a basic understanding of how a CCTV system functions, what products to select, how to strip wires, attach connectors, install cameras on mounts, hook cameras to a monitor and a DVR. Lab Fee: $90.00 per student for a 326 page CCTV System Design & Installation Manual. B011 Hollow Metal Door & Frame Servicing Instructor: David Thielen, CML This class will introduce the student to Hollow Metal Doors and Frames, including nomenclature, design, installation, repair, and servicing techniques of various types of doors and frames. There will be a demonstration of tools as well as lecture, discussion and videos of troubleshooting and repair techniques. The hands on portion will give the student some valuable experience in installing locks, repairing hinges, retrofitting hardware, preventing door collapse, cutting doors, and other profitable skills. Materials to bring to class: Students should bring an assortment of screwdrivers and Allen wrenches. The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP section L-28.
Course Descriptions (cont): Friday, May 11, 2012: SL021 ALOA Certified Fire Door Inspector (Day 1 of 2) Instructor: Edward A. Hite, CML, CFDI 16 hours This is must class for the professional locksmith today. At the completion of the 2 day class and the successful completion of the additional requirements, you will be eligible to become an ALOA Certified Fire Door Inspector (CFDI). IFDIA is the only association with an IAS accredited curriculum. IFDIA and ALOA bring quality educational standards to the business of fire door inspections. We provide a completely green online reporting and communication environment for the annual fire door assembly requirement as outlined in NFPA 80. This 2-day class includes the IFDIA Online Course with exam in a classroom environment as well as the ALOA Fire Door Field Inspection Course and a review of the International Fire Code 2009 edition with an exam. For those who have not passed the ALOA PRP L-07 Life Safety Codes exam it will be given at the completion of the class. Door/frame construction, locks, closers, pivots, and other hardware will be presented with an emphasis on installation, servicing, adjustments, and retrofitting techniques. Improving security on these doors will also be discussed. Some hands-on will be involved. Although handouts are included in the class, students will have the option of purchasing the Aluminum Stile Door Service & Repair Manual by Jake Jakubuwski for a special reduced price of $100.00. Materials to bring to class: Allen wrenches and a set of screwdrivers. Prerequisite: Basic Locksmithing The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP section L-28. SL021 ALOA Certified Fire Door Inspector (Day 1 of 2) (See day 1 for description) Instructor Bios: Charles R. Dixon, CML is the owner of Evesham Security Technologies Corp. in Marlton, New Jersey. Charles has been a professional locksmith and electronic security technician for 20 years and in the last 12 years has concentrated on electronic access control and CCTV system sales, design, specifications. Charles is a member of GPLA, ALOA and SAVTA. He has developed and instructed classes for The Institutional Locksmiths Association, Greater Philadelphia Locksmith Association and New Jersey Master Locksmith Association at their conventions. Charles is an ALOA Continuing Education (ACE) Certified Instructor and instructs at ACE events throughout the country. David E. Thielen, CML is the lockshop manager for Adams Twelve Five Star School District, Broomfield, Colorado. David has been a professional locksmith for more than 25 years a member of RMLA and DHI and a member of ALOA since 1985. He has instructed classes for the Rocky Mountain Locksmiths Association and has developed and instructed ACE certified classes for ALOA at regional and national conventions. David is a two time winner of the ALOA Continuing Education (ACE) Instructor of the Year award, most recently receiving the 2004 ACE award which is presented annually by the ALOA Training Department.
