Attachment D Page 1 of 2 A17 Hoistway Committee page 1 Task Group on Hoistway Access Proposal to revise requirements for car top lighting, car bottom lighting, and car alarm device The current 2.14.7.1.4 is shown below for reference only; note that the current requirements are not altered: 2.14.7.1.4 Each elevator shall be provided with lighting and a duplex receptacle fixture on the car top. The lighting shall be permanently connected, fixed, or portable, or a combination thereof, to provide an illumination level of not less than 100 lx (10 fc) measured at the point of any elevator part or equipment, where maintenance or inspection is to be performed from the car top. All lighting shall be equipped with guards. The light switch shall be accessible from the landing when accessing the car top. Revise A17.1/B44 as follows: 2.14.7.1.4 Each elevator shall be provided with lighting and a duplex receptacle fixture on the car top conforming to the following:. (a) thethe car top lighting shall be permanently connected, fixed, or portable, or a combination thereof, to provide an illumination level of not less than 100 lx (10 fc) measured at the point of any elevator part or equipment, where maintenance or inspection is to be performed from the car top. All lighting shall be equipped with guards. (b) thethe car top light switch shall be accessible from the landing when accessing the car top. (c) the car top lighting shall illuminate when the hoistway access operation switch labeled "ACCESS" (2.12.7.3.1) is placed in the "ENABLE" position. (d) the car top lighting shall illuminate within 2 s after a hoistway door is unlocked while the car door or gate is in the closed position. 2.14.7.1.5 Each elevator shall be provided with lighting on the car bottom conforming to the following: (a) the car bottom lighting shall provide illumination of not less than 100 lx (10 fc) measured at any point between 915 mm (36 in.) and 1 225 mm (48 in.) vertically down from the lowest part of the bottom of the car. All lighting shall be equipped with guards.
Attachment D Page 2 of 2 A17 Hoistway Committee page 2 Task Group on Hoistway Access (b) the car bottom lighting shall illuminate when the hoistway access operation switch labeled "ACCESS" (2.12.7.3.1) is placed in the "ENABLE" position. (c) the car bottom lighting shall illuminate within 2 s after a hoistway door is unlocked while the car door or gate is in the closed position. 2.14.8 Car Alarm Device Each elevator shall be provided with car alarm device(s) conforming to the requirements in 2.14.8.1 and 2.14.8.2. 2.14.8.1 Location and Sound Pressure Rating. One or more car alarm devices shall be located in the hoistway and shall be capable producing of a continuously sounding audible signal with a sound pressure rating greater than 40 dba at every location within the hoistway but shall not exceed 80 dba when measured 1 m (40 in.) from the source. In hoistways where more than one car alarm device is required, the devices shall be no further apart than 20 m (65 ft.). 2.14.8.2 Operation. The car alarm device(s) shall sound within 2 s after a hoistway door is unlocked while the car door or gate is in the closed position. Rationale: to allow elevator personnel to more safely observe where a car is located in the hoistway and to more safely access and egress the car top at a landing. The two second delay allows time for the car door to begin opening after the hoistway door is unlocked preventing unnecessary light illumination and nuisance alarms during normal operation.
