WABASH VALLEY MASTER GARDENER JULY 2013 GARDEN GAZETTE Next Planning and scheduling meeting is July 16 at 6:30pm at the 4-H Building at the Vigo County Fairgrounds. Speaker will be Pat Secrest on Got a Bug Problem. On June 15 a delicious carry-in meal was enjoyed by everyone at Bill Hiatt s home after the Garden Tour. Thanks to Bill and Janice for providing the sandwiches and drinks. Education time was judging flowers for the fair by Verna Gaskin for.5 hours education time. Meeting called to order by President Sam Ligget. Minutes from last meeting (May 21) approved as published in the Gazette. At this time Sam sent around a sign-up sheet for the 2014 Spring Seminar. Chairman and committee members are needed to start getting speakers and vendors in place. The July speaker is Pat Secrest on Got a bug problem. The August speakers are Bob Archer and Phil Small on Introduction to Tree Identification. Corresponding Secretary Verna Gaskin had nothing to report. Treasurer s report John Hilderbrand not in attendance. Service Coordinator: Cyd Hunter nothing to report. No badges have been ordered.

Giving Garden: Greg Fields reports that 45 pounds of broccoli was picked on Friday. There will be a work-day on Monday, June 17 at 9:00am. Verna will send an email out to members. Flowerbeds: Roger Tonsfeldt The Patriotic Garden had two workdays to spread mulch. The mulching is now done. You can now water manually or by sprinkler now. Hawthorn Park Labyrinth roses need to be deadheaded. There is a workday on Tuesday, June 18 at 10:00am. Verna will send an email out to members. Vigo County Fair: Bill Hiatt reports that there are enough bud vases on hand. A sign-up sheet for workers was sent around. Still need items such as craft paint, flowers and foliage and ribbon for bows, and any kind of items for the stepping stones. OLD BUSINESS: Flowerbed at Fruitridge and Ohio: Some money left over. Should something for fall be purchased? Amy Good will look into this. Luke House project in Sullivan: Larry Agee stated that everything is planted and mulched. NEW BUSINESS: State Master Gardener Conference is at Bristol, Indiana, September 5 7. Members going are Sam Ligget, Peggy Harlan and Mary Ellen Hlatko. ANNOUNCEMENTS: The Purdue Master Gardeners manual is now available on a flash drive. NEXT MEETINGS: Planning and scheduling meeting is July 16, at 6:30pm at the 4-H building at the Vigo County Fairgrounds. Board meeting: July 2 at 6:00pm at Sam Ligget s home, 2706 S. 25 th St. in Terre Haute. The Board meetings for next year (2014) have been booked at the Vigo County Public Library.

Motion made and seconded to adjourn. Garden Tour: The word find (scavenger hunt) was Elderberry. Winners were Charlene McKean, Amy good and Carl Trent. There was also a drawing for two books and the winners were Melissa Brown and Larry Agee..5 hours volunteer time. BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING, Sam Ligget s home, July 2, 6:00pm. Meeting called to order at 6:00pm by President Sam Ligget. Board members present were Sam Liggett, Bob Archer, Verna Gaskin, John Hilderbrand, Carl Trent, Larry Agee, Beth Keyes and Bill Hiatt. Absent were Pat Youman and Cyd Hunter. Association members present: Greg fields and Brenda Kirchner. Vice President Bob Archer Education time for July 16 planning and scheduling session is Pat Secrest speaking on Got a Bug Problem. Recording Secretary Pat Youman absent Corresponding Secretary Verna Gaskin Received a check from Margaret Hoggatt to be used for the 2014 Spring Seminar. Received a thank you from Jerry and Judy Meier of Sullivan, thanking the Master Gardeners for landscaping around the Luke House. Received a check from Peggy Harlan for the purchase of craft paint for the make and take projects at the fair. Thank you notes will be sent to Margaret and Peggy. Treasurer John Hilderbrand Gave the balance as of July 2. A checkin the amount of $500 was sent to IVY Tech for a scholarship to be awarded to an Agriculture/Horticulture student. Member Tim Moore s mother passed away and an arrangement was sent from the Master Gardeners.

Service Coordinator Cyd Hunter was absent. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Giving Garden: Greg reports that over 1,000 have been picked and distributed to area soup kitchens. He will have a full report at the next meeting. Another Church (Life Center) has been added to the list of kitchens receiving produce. Greg also stated that at noon today (July 2) at the Giving Garden a donation was given to the Giving Garden from the India Association of Terre Haute. The donation will be used to purchase seed, potting soil, etc. Channel 10 was there to record the donation. Gardens: Patriotic Garden ninebark has been trimmed and beds have been weeded. 1 st and Oak has been weeded but still having a problem with weeds. Organic Preen has been obtained by Jim Luzar and will be applied. Hawthorn Park The roses at the Labyrinth have all been trimmed. Fairgrounds beds have been planted and rose bushes and trees have been trimmed. Vigo County Fair: About ready a few more thins to obtain. 144 hypertufa rocks were made. OLD BUSINESS: Flowerbed at Ohio Blvd. and Fruitridge balance of the money will be used to purchase fall plants and/or spring bulbs. Garden Tour Everyone enjoyed the tour of Patti Weaver s garden, Phil Ewoldson s garden and Bill Hiatt s garden. A tour of the Stone Fabrication Plant in Brazil did not take place due to no one available to guide the tour. After a tour of Bill s garden, a carry in meal was enjoyed at Bill s home followed by our planning session. A big thank you to Patti, Phil and Bill and Janice for an enjoyable afternoon and evening. Spring Seminar New chairperson is Brenda Kirchner. If anyone has any ideas for speakers please contact Brenda at k211713@aol.com State Master Gardener Conference: Three people are going Sam Liggett, Peggy Harlan and Mary Ellen Hlatko.

2014 location and dates for the Board of directors meetings have been finalized. We will be meeting at the Library in room C, 6:00pm on the first Thursday of each month. The dates and times will be printed in the January 2014 Garden Gazette. NEW BUSINESS: Christmas in the Park need a chairman and also a theme for this year. Chili Cook-Off is in September. John Hilderbrand and his committee will again be cooking John s two time award winning HOT HOT HOT chili. They won hottest chili in 2011 and 2012. (and no John does not share his recipe for the hottest chili) Next Planning and Scheduling meeting: July 16, 2013, at the 4-H Building, Vigo County Fairgrounds, 6:30pm. Next Board of Directors meeting: August 1, 2013, Vigo County Public Library, room C, 6:00pm. Motion made to adjourn and seconded. Meeting adjourned with.75 volunteer time.
