COMMUNIQUE SAN GABRIEL VALLEY CACTUS & SUCCULENT SOCIETY An Affiliate of the Cactus & Succulent Society of America, Inc. Meetings are held at 7:30 PM on the 2 nd Thursday of the month in the Palm Room, Los Angeles County Arboretum, Arcadia December 2008 Volume 41 Number 12 HappyHolidays Well, once again Santa will be flying over the Los Angeles Arboretum for our annual Holiday Dinner on Sunday, December 14th. The festivities will begin at 5:00 pm in Ayres Hall. If you are a new member, or have never attended our Holiday Dinner, this year is the year to attend. It s going to be special! There will be lots and lots of food and fun. Even if you have not signed up to bring a side dish, feel free to bring your favorite dish. Our Chapter provides the turkey, ham and mashed potatoes. Help with set-up before dinner is always welcome. Set-up begins at 3:00 pm sharp. And if you re so inclined, a bit of assistance after all the festivities wind down is also welcome. So, bring a side dish and, of course, a hearty appetite. See you there! Tommy Dodson Holiday Auction: Bring Money!! This is a great opportunity to purchase (or sell) rare or specimen sized plants. Auction Rules: Limit your total plants and/or items to 3 (you must be a club member to sell). Finances; club gets 30%, seller gets 70%. Plants should be mature, well-grown specimens rather than small immature plants. Other items may include succulent related artwork, such as paintings, line drawings, pottery or other crafts. Or maybe you have come across some neat items with cactus or succulents on them, so bring them in. Please label your items with your name and a minimum bid or if the item is a donation just your name and a note that it is a donation. The plants will be auctioned by some of our knowledgeable club members. Gift Exchange: Anyone may participate in this optional activity. Bring a cactus or succulent (or related item). It should be in good condition (something you would like to receive). Attach a label with your name on one side and, if it s a plant, write the species on the other side. The plant or item that is deemed most desirable will be auctioned during the party. Then, the person who brought in that selection gets the first pick from all the remaining items. Whoever s gift is then picked gets next choice and so on (the more desirable the item you bring, the earlier you will get your chance to pick). Only one item per person please! 1

Holiday Plants: Every year, each member receives a Holiday gift plant from the Club. The plants are, as much as possible, identical. Members are invited to bring in all surviving plants from previous Holiday Parties, to see how well they have been grown. Here s your chance to show how good a grower you are! So, remember to bring in your plants from years gone by. As a reminder, the plants for the last few years have been: 2007 Gymnocalycium Spegazzinii, 2006 Euphorbia Obesa, 2005 - Uebelmannia Pectinifera, 2004 - Lithops dortheae, 2003 - Discocactus bueneckeri, 2002 Adenia glace,. 2001 Echinocereus festinates v. raisins,. 2000 - Euphorbia aerations minor, 1999 Mammillaria deheardtiana, 1998 Raphionacme flanaganii, 1997 Ortegocactus macdougalii, 1996 - Euphorbia bupleurifolia, 1995- Sulcorebutia candiae. Plant of the Month: No mini-show this month, just the party! Study Group: No meeting this month. Everyone is too busy with the Holidays! SGVC&SS Election: Club officers for 2009 were elected at the November meeting. The slate put forward by the nominating committee ran unopposed, and was elected by unanimous decree. The officers will be: President Buck Hemenway Board Member Phil Skonieczki Vice President Horace Birgh Board Member Karen Ostler Treasurer Rita Gerlach Board Member Ralph Massey Secretary Anne Keegan Board Members serve a 2 year term. Carryover Board Members are Cindy Arakaki, Manny Rivera and John Matthews. Membership Renewal: It is time to pay your dues for 2009. The dues for 2009 are $15 per household if you elect to have the Newsletter (Communique) sent to you via E-mail or $20 per household if you want to have it sent via US Mail.. Please note any corrections or changes in your information when sending in your check. Also note if you do not want your address listed in the roster. This would a good time to add your partner to your membership as the new membership setup is per household. Editor s Note: As my time as Newsletter Editor comes to an end I would like to send out a Thank You to all of the members who provided the information that went into the Communique. I especially want to thank Susan Weststeyn, and Walter too, for their help in folding, stamping, sealing and labeling over 100 newsletters each month. Evelynn A special thanks to the members who participated in the November POM Mini Show. Due to technical difficulties we were unable to present the winners at the meeting. The SGVCSS 15 th Annual Winter Show was celebrated on November 8 & 9, 2008. It was a great show with beautiful plants and wonderful people. The Show Committee wants to thank all of the Club members who worked hard to set-up and tear down, judges, clerks and tabulators, the people working in the sales area, tag counting, plant holding, back gate guarding, hospitality table, the people in charge of the kitchen who made sure we were fed, all of the exhibitors who brought those gorgeous plants to the show and, of course, all of the vendors and auctioneers. Saturday Night: Those who attended the Show Dinner, provided by Richard Jones Pit Barbeque, had a great time and had a chance to obtain plants from our plant auction.
