ABOUT US Our Mission The Waterfront Alliance works to protect, transform, and revitalize our harbor and waterfront. Our Vision We believe the harbor and waterways of New York and New Jersey should reflect the vitality and diversity of the great metropolis that surround them. We envision a harbor and waterways alive with commerce and recreation: where sailboats, kayaks, and pleasure craft share the waterways with commuter ferries, barges, and container ships; where parks and neighborhoods are connected by affordable waterborne transit; where exciting waterfront destinations reflect the vitality and diversity of a great metropolis; where the waterfront is no longer walled off by highways and rails or by private luxury residences, but is a shared resource for all; and where our coastal city a city of islands intelligently and resolutely prepares for the reality of sea level rise. What We Do Whether we live, work, or play where the water meets the land, we have the shared responsibility to ensure our waterfront is accessible for boating and recreation, ecologically healthy, resilient to climate change, and a source of good-paying jobs. The Waterfront Alliance is at the forefront of building consensus and influencing waterfront policy and planning through providing public testimony and producing white papers. Our programs include serving as an early advocate for five-borough ferry service, building neighborhood docks for educational and recreational use, and helping communities create better waterfront design using our Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines. Our annual conferences and events bring thousands of people together for shared dialogue around our waterfront.

THE EVENT Heroes of the Harbor honors members of our waterfront community for their unique contributions to making the New York Harbor and waterfront an exceptional place to live, work, and play. A highlight of the evening is the Parade of Boats, an urban flotilla of dozens of boats big and small that delights our guests and the public as it passes Chelsea Piers. Personalized ring buoys are presented to our heroes during dinner. As our signature annual fundraising event, Heroes of the Harbor raises critical funds to support our work to protect, transform, and revitalize the New York and New Jersey harbor and waterfront. Meet our 2015 Heroes AECOM is a global provider of technical and management support services, including civil and building engineering, architecture and landscape architecture, and urban planning and design, to a broad range of markets. AECOM s work around New York Harbor ranges from improving our water quality through cutting-edge wastewater treatment, to Sandy recovery and improved resiliency, to helping the container ports operate more efficiently and better environmentally, to numerous waterfront parks and ecosystem restoration. James Corner Field Operations is a team of landscape architects and urban designers, committed to innovative design of public spaces, including creating 21-century waterfronts around the New York Harbor. For example, Field Operations is working to transform a half-mile waterfront as part of the Greenpoint Landing project the site is one of the first waterfront projects to address post-hurricane Sandy regulations for developments in flood hazard zones. Field Operations is best known for leading the design and construction of the iconic High Line a 23-block-long park built on a reclaimed elevated railway. Billion Oyster Project is an ecosystem restoration and education project run by The Urban Assembly New York Harbor School aimed at restoring one billion live oysters to New York Harbor. To date 11.5 million oysters are being grown in the harbor and more than 3,000 middle and high school students are engaged in the project, including students from 36 partnering public schools.

PARADE OF BOATS The Parade of Boats draws large crowds to Hudson River Park, north of Chelsea Piers, lining the shore to view and learn about the spectacular ships of our harbor. Historic sailing craft, working ships, ferries, magnificent classic and contemporary yachts, fireboats, kayaks, and canoes all participate as the sun sets over the Hudson River. The Parade of Boats kicks off the Waterfront Alliance s annual Heroes of the Harbor award gala at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers, which honors extraordinary individuals and organizations whose efforts have improved our waterfront. The parade runs from 6pm to 7pm and is narrated. The 2014 Parade of Boats included more than two dozen boats. The event is free and open to the public, and those attending the Heroes of the Harbor gala view the parade from The Lighthouse terrace during cocktail hour.
