Specifications for Using Filtrexx Growth Media Blankets Filtrexx Growth Media Blanket Installation and Maintenance 1.0 Description: This work shall consist of furnishing, installing, maintaining and seeding a water permeable Growth Media Blanket (Filtrexx Growth Media Blanket) to reduce soil erosion and sediment by preventing soil particles from water moving off site into adjacent waterways or storm water drainage systems. 2.0 Growth Media Products 1. Growth Media used for Filtrexx Growth Media Blankets shall be weed free and derived from a well-decomposed source of organic matter. The media shall be produced using an aerobic composting process meeting or exceeding M.O.E. 101, C.C.M.E. Type A and Type AA regulations, and Compost Quality Assurance Program,(C.Q.A.) including time and temperature data indicating effective weed seed, pathogen and insect larvae kill. The growth media shall be free of any refuse, contaminants or other materials toxic to plant growth. Noncomposted products will not be accepted. Test methods for the items below should follow USCC TMECC guidelines for laboratory procedures: A. PH 5.0-8.0 in accordance with TMECC 04.11-A, Electrometric ph Determinations for Compost B. Non seeded Filtrexx Growth Media Blankets: Particle size 100% passing a 50mm{2 } sieve, 99% passing a 25mm{1 } sieve, minimum of 90% passing a 18.25mm{3/4 } sieve in accordance with TMECC 02.02-B, Sample Sieving for Aggregate Size Classification. For seeded Growth Media Blankets, seed should be incorporated at the time of application in the entire depth of the growth media blanket, at rates per square foot, per square yard, per square meter, per acre or per hectare, as acceptable to the engineer. The following particle sizes shall also be followed: 100% passing a 50mm{2 } sieve, 99% passing a 25mm{1 } sieve, minimum of 60% passing a 12.5mm{1/2 }sieve. All other testing parameters remain the same. The seeding rates are generally similar or slightly higher than those used when considering application of seed via hydroseeding or other seeding methods. C. Moisture content of less than 60% in accordance with standardized test methods for moisture determination. D. Material shall be relatively free (<1% by dry weight) of inert or foreign man made materials. E. A sample shall be submitted to the engineer for approval prior to being used and must comply with all local, provincial and federal regulations. 3

3.0 Construction: 1. Filtrexx Growth Media Blankets will be placed at locations indicated on plans as directed by the Engineer. Unless otherwise specified, Filtrexx Growth Media Blankets should be installed at a minimum depth of 25mm {1 }. Depth requirements are indicated on CAD drawings attached. 2. Filtrexx Growth Media Blankets may be seeded at time of installation for establishment of permanent vegetation. The Engineer will specify seed requirements. 3. Filtrexx Growth Media Blankets are not to be used in direct flow situations or in runoff channels. 4. See attached schematic for Growth Media Blanket Installation. 5. If required, combining Filtrexx Growth Media Blankets with Filtrexx SiltSoxx or Filter Berms may offer additional protection from slopes that have heavy run-on water. In these situations, Filtrexx SiltSoxx, Filter Berms and Growth Media Blankets may be used in combination (see schematic attached). TM TM 4.0 Maintenance: 1. The contractor shall maintain the Filtrexx Growth Media Blanket in a functional condition at all times and it shall be routinely inspected. 2. If the Growth Media Blanket fails, it will be routinely repaired. 3. The Filtrexx Growth Media Blanket will be seeded on site, at rates and seed types as determined by the Engineer. Once vegetation is established, final seeding is not required. 4

5.0 Method of measurement: Bid items shall show measurement as Filtrexx Growth Media Blanket per square foot, per square yard, or per square meter. Depth to be measured at time of application. 6.0 Performance: 1. Contractor is responsible for establishing a working erosion control system and may, with approval of the Engineer, work outside the minimum construction requirements as needed. 2. If the Filtrexx Growth Media Blanket deteriorates or fails, it will be repaired or replaced. 7.0 Application guidelines: 1. Contractor shall provide the Engineer with proof that ie: a 50mm{2 } Growth Media Blanket has been applied. This rate equals approximately 270 cubic yards of compost material per acre of application area or approximately 665 cubic yards per hectare. Contractor will supply ample evidence showing this amount of material has been effectively placed (i.e., truck load tickets). 2. Contractor is required to be a certified Filtrexx Installer as determined by Filtrexx Canada Inc. (519-753-0324 or visit website at www.filtrexx.ca). .2 Topsoil.3 Soil Amendments 1.5.2 Label samples with date, origin and intended use of product. 1.5.3 Reviewed and accepted samples will become the standard of material by which installed Work will be verified. 1.6 STORAGE AND PROTECTION 1.6.1 Protect plant material from frost, excessive heat, wind and sun damage during delivery:.1 When delivery distance is less than 30 km and vehicle travels at speeds under 80 km/h, tie tarpaulins around plants or over vehicle box..2 When delivery distance exceeds 30 km or vehicle travels at speeds over 80 km/h, use enclosed vehicle where practical..3 Protect foliage and root balls using anti-desiccants and tarpaulins, where use of enclosed vehicle is impractical due to size and weight of plant material. 1.6.2 Protect stored plant material from frost, wind and sun and as follows:.1 For bare root plant material, preserve adequate moisture around roots by heeling-in or burying roots in topsoil and watering to full depth of root zone..2 For pots and containers, maintain adequate moisture level in containers..3 For fibre pots, heel-in into topsoil and maintain adequate moisture level..4 For balled and burlapped and wire basket root balls, place to protect branches from damage. Maintain adequate moisture level in root zones. 1.7 WASTE MANAGEMENT AND DISPOSAL 1.7.1 Collect and separate for disposal all paper, plastic, polystyrene, and corrugated cardboard packaging material for recycling at appropriate recycling facilities. 1.7.2 Divert unused metal materials from landfill to metal recycling facility. 1.7.3 Divert discarded plastic plant containers materials from landfill to plastic recycling facility. 1.7.4 Dispose of unused fertilizer, anti-desiccant or other materials defined as hazardous or toxic at an official hazardous material collection site. 1.7.5 Divert unused wood and mulch materials from landfill to composting facility. 1.8 SCHEDULING 1.8.1 Obtain approval from Landscape Architect of Planting Schedule 7 days in advance of shipment of plant material. 1.8.2 Schedule to include:.1 Quantity and type of plant material (including species and cultivar information)..2 Any requests for substitution submitted for approval by Landscape Architect..3 Shipping dates.4 Arrival dates on site.5 Planting Dates 1.8.3 Plant only under conditions that are conducive to the growth and health of plants. 1.8.4 When permission from the Landscape Architect has been obtained, plant material grown in containers may be planted throughout the growing season. 1.9 WARRANTY AND INSPECTIONS 1.9.1 For all plant material as itemized on plant list the warranty period is 24 months. 1.9.2 The Contractor hereby warrants that all plant material as itemized on plant list will remain free of defects for the full duration of the warranty period. 1.9.3 A Preliminary Inspection shall occur upon Substantial Completion of all plantings works, to initiate the start of the Warranty Period. Preliminary Acceptance will be granted provided the Landscape Architect is satisfied with the quality of the work. 1.9.4 All plant material that is not found in a satisfactory growing condition shall be replaced by the Contractor at no additional cost to the Client. 1.9.5 All replacement plantings shall be under warranty, for a minimum of 12 months, until the end of the original warranty period. 1.9.6 An Interim Inspection shall occur one year after the start of the Warranty Period to ensure that the required maintenance is being undertaken. 1.9.7 End-of-warranty inspection will be conducted by the Landscape Architect. Final Acceptance of the plantings will be granted provided that all plant materials are in healthy growing condition. 1.9.8 Landscape Architect reserves the right to extend Contractor's warranty responsibilities for an additional one year if, at end of initial warranty period, leaf development and growth is not sufficient to ensure future survival. 1.10 MEASUREMENT FOR PAYMENT 1.10.1 Where measurement for payment is on a per item unit basis, each individual plant shall comprise a single unit. 1.10.2 Where payment is to be based on a Stipulated Price, the Unit Prices shall be used as the basis for adjustments due to addition or deletions. 1.10.3 The Unit Price for all trees, shrub and ground cover plantings shall include the supply of all required plant material and associated materials (ie. topsoil, mulch, mycorise inoculants, etc.), equipment and labour needed to complete the work as per the specifications, and all maintenance specified during the warranty period. 1.10.4 For the purpose of measurement for payment, plants will be grouped according to installed size (ie. caliper tree, tree whip, large shrub, small shrub, and groundcover) as specified in the drawings. The unit price shall take into consideration any cost variations between species. 1.11 BASIS OF PAYMENT 1.11.1 Where payment for plant material supply and installation is to be made at item unit price bid, this shall be based on quantities identified in the Schedule of Unit Prices unless additions or deletions have been approved by the Landscape Architect. 1.11.2 Otherwise payment for plant material supply and installation is to be made at the Stipulated Price, as per the Contract documents. 1.11.3 Whether based on Unit Price or Stipulated Price, the payment at the Contract Price for the above tender items shall be full compensation for all the labour, equipment and material as needed to do the work as per the drawings, details and specifications, and all maintenance specified during the warranty period. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 PLANT MATERIAL 2.1.1 All plant material must be nursery grown and meet the specifications set out in the latest Canadian Standards for Nursery Stock with respect to sizing, grading, quality and method of cultivation..1 Source of plant material - grown in climate and soil conditions similar to those of the installation site..2 Nomenclature of specified plants - conform to the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants and the latest edition of the Standardized Plant Names..3 Any plant material not conforming to the above standards will be designated as collected plants and will be rejected. 2.1.2 Plant material true to name and type, free of disease, insects, defects or injuries and structurally sound with strong fibrous root system. 2.1.3 Trees - with straight trunks, well and characteristically branched for species, except where specified otherwise. 2.1.4 Bare root stock - nursery grown, in dormant stage, not balled and burlapped or container grown. 2.1.5 All plant material must conform to the sizes specified on the plant list, except that larger material may be used when approved by the Landscape Architect. Use of larger material will not increase the contract price. 2.1.6 Substitutions with other species or cultivars will not be accepted without the written approval of the Landscape Architect. 2.2 TOPSOIL 2.2.1 Topsoil to be used to backfill planting holes shall be approved by Landscape Architect. 2.2.2 See Technical Specification for Topsoil and Finish Grading for further information. 2.3 WATER 2.3.1 Free of any impurities that would inhibit plant growth. 2.4 TREE SUPPORT STAKES 2.4.1 T-bar, steel, 40 x 40 x 5 x 2440mm, drilled to receive #11 gauge (3mm) wire. 2.5 GUYING WIRE 2.5.1 #11 gauge (3mm) galvanized wire or 3mm diameter multi-wire steel cable. 2.6 TURNBUCKLE AND ACCESSORIES 2.6.1 Factory galvanized wire tighteners, clamps, eye bolts and turnbuckle, with 150mm long eyes and 10mm dia. threaded opening for tightening. 2.7 GUYING COLLAR 2.7.1 Guying collar: plastic, 13mm diameter, nylon reinforced. 2.8 TRUNK PROTECTION 2.8.1 Plastic: perforated spiraled strip or alternative product approved by Landscape Architect. 2.9 MULCH 2.9.1 Shredded bark mulch: varying in size from 25 to 75mm in diameter, from bark of coniferous trees. 2.9.2 Free of any chemicals or impurities that would inhibit plant growth. 2.10 FERTILIZER Page 5 of 11

2.10.1 Synthetic commercial type, only as recommended by soil test report and approved by the Landscape Architect. 2.11 MYCORISE 2.11.1 Inoculants that contains several species of fungus which are compatible with deciduous and coniferous trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants. 2.11.2 Suggested supplier: Premier Tech, 1 Premier Avenue, Riviere-du-Loup, Quebec, G5R 6C1 Toll Free: 1.800.606.6926, Fax: 418.867.3999, www.usemyke.com.1 Active ingredients: Endomycorrhizal fungus Glomus intraradices and Ectomycorrhizal fungus Pisolithus tinctorius..2 Available format: 30L bag..3 Storing conditions: avoid freezing and intensive heat, store in dry location, out of direct sunlight. 2.11.3 Equivalent alternates must be approved by the Landscape Architect. 2.12 RODENT PROTECTION 2.12.1 Skoot or approved substitute. 2.12.2 All tree whips, shrubs and ground covers to be treated with an application of rodent repellent, prior to each winter season throughout the warranty period. 2.13 ANTI-DESICCANT 2.13.1 Wax-like emulsion 2.14 SOURCE QUALITY CONTROL 2.14.1 Obtain approval from Landscape Architect of plant material prior to planting..1 Upon request, the Landscape Architect shall have the opportunity to inspect all plant material at the nursery, before any plant material is delivered to the site..2 If not inspected at the nursery, the Landscape Architect shall inspect all plant material on site, before any planting operations begin. 2.14.2 The Landscape Architect reserves the right to reject any plant material that does not conform to specified standards. 2.14.3 Imported plant material must be accompanied with necessary permits and import licenses. Any access to areas outside the working limits, as defined in the Contract, must be approved in writing by the Landscape Architect. 3.2 PRE-PLANTING PREPARATION 3.2.1 Ensure plant materials are acceptable to Landscape Architect. 3.2.2 Remove damaged roots and branches from plant material. 3.2.3 Where specified, apply anti-desiccant to conifers and deciduous trees in leaf in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. 3.3 EXCAVATION AND PREPARATION OF PLANTING BEDS 3.3.1 Establishment of sub-grade for planting beds is specified in Section 02311 - Site Grading. 3.3.2 Preparation of planting beds is specified in Section 02911 - Topsoil and Finish Grading. 3.3.3 Ensure all Topsoil and Finish Grading works are complete prior to planting. 3.3.4 Where Sod Mats are specified in the same location as plantings, shrubs are to be carefully planted through installed Sod Mats (see Sod Mat detail and specification for additional information). 3.3.5 Where Erosion Control Blankets are specified, shrubs are to be carefully planted after installation of the blanket. 3.3.6 All tree and shrub plantings shall be completed before hydro seeding operations begin. 3.3.7 For individual planting holes and planting beds:.1 Stake out location of plantings, as per drawings and accompanying details, and obtain approval from Landscape Architect prior to excavating..2 Excavate to depth and width as indicated in details..3 Remove rocks, roots, debris and toxic material from excavated material that will be used as planting soil for trees and individual shrubs. Properly dispose of any excess material..4 Scarify sides of planting hole as indicated in details. 3.3.8 Remove any water which enters excavations prior to planting. Notify Landscape Architect if water source is ground water. Page 7 of 11

3.3.9 Provide drainage for planting holes in heavy soil if natural drainage does not exist. Method of drainage must be approved by Landscape Architect. 3.3.10 Add Mycorise inoculants to each planting hole at a rate of 60ml per shrub. Apply a layer of Mycorise to the walls of the planting hole, so that roots are in contact with the product. Page 8 of 11

3.4 PLANTING 3.4.1 For bare root stock, place 50-100mm backfill soil in bottom of hole. Plant with roots placed straight out in hole. 3.4.2 For jute burlapped root balls, cut away top one third of wrapping and wire basket without damaging root ball. Do not pull burlap or rope from under root ball. 3.4.3 For container stock or root balls in non-degradable wrapping, remove entire container or wrapping without damaging root ball. 3.4.4 Plant vertically in locations as indicated. Orient plant material to give best appearance in relation to structure, roads and walks. 3.4.5 For tree and shrub plantings:.1 Place plant material at depth equal to depth as originally grown in nursery..2 Backfill soil in 150 mm lifts. Tamp each lift to eliminate air pockets..3 When two thirds of depth of planting pit has been backfilled, fill remaining space with water..4 After water has penetrated into soil, backfill to finish grade..5 Form watering saucer as indicated. 3.4.6 For ground cover plantings, backfill soil evenly to finish grade and tamp to eliminate air pockets..1 Water plant material thoroughly..2 After soil settlement has occurred, fill with soil to finish grade. 3.4.7 Dispose of burlap, wire and container material off site as per 1.7 - Waste Management and Disposal. 3.5 TRUNK PROTECTION 3.5.1 Install trunk protection on deciduous trees as indicated. 3.5.2 Install trunk protection prior to installation of tree supports where specified. 3.6 TREE SUPPORTS 3.6.1 Install tree supports as indicated in planting details. 3.6.2 Use two (2) tree stake supports for deciduous trees greater than 2m in height and evergreens greater than 1.5m..1 Place stakes in line with prevailing winds and approximately150 mm from trunk..2 Drive stake minimum 150 mm into undisturbed soil beneath roots, taking care to avoid damage to root ball. Ensure stakes are secure and vertical. Page 9 of 11

3.7 PRUNING.3 Thread guying wire through guying collar tube. Twist wire to form collar and secure firmly to stake. Cut off excess wire..4 Guying collar to be installed at approximately 2/3 height for evergreens and 1/2 height for deciduous trees. 3.7.1 Plants shall be pruned after any required tree supports have been installed. 3.7.2 The amount of pruning shall be limit to the minimum necessary to remove any dead or broken branches. 3.7.3 Pruning shall be completed in such a manner as to preserve the natural character and form of the plants..1 Do not cut leader.2 Do not alter the growth habit of the plant. 3.7.4 Employ clean sharp tools and make cuts flush with main branch, smooth and sloping as to prevent accumulation of water. 3.8 MULCHING 3.8.1 Ensure soil settlement has been corrected prior to mulching. 3.8.2 Spread mulch, or install colloidal collars, as indicated in planting details. 3.8.3 Keep mulch 100mm away from crown of plant. 3.9 MAINTENANCE DURING ESTABLISHMENT AND WARRANTY PERIOD 3.9.1 Perform following maintenance operations from time of initial planting to end of warranty period:.1 Water once weekly for first four (4) weeks, and thereafter water sufficiently to maintain soil moisture conditions for optimum establishment, growth and health of plant material without causing erosion..2 For evergreen plant material, water thoroughly in late fall prior to freeze-up to saturate soil around root system..3 Where specified, apply anti-desiccant to evergreen plant material, or provide alternative protection against winter wind damage..4 All tree whips, shrubs and ground covers to be treated with an application of rodent repellent, prior to each winter season throughout the warranty period..5 Apply fertilizer in early spring as indicated by soil test and approved by Landscape Architect..6 Remove weeds on a monthly basis..7 Reform damaged watering saucers, and Page 10 of 11

.8 Replace or re-spread damaged, missing or disturbed mulch..9 If required to control insects, fungus and disease, use appropriate control methods in accordance with Federal, Provincial and Municipal regulations. Obtain product approval from Landscape Architect prior to application..10 Remove dead or broken or hazardous branches from plant material..11 Keep trunk protection and guy wires in proper repair and adjustment..12 Remove trunk protection, tree supports and level watering saucers at end of warranty period..13 Remove and replace dead plants and plants not in healthy growing condition. Make replacements in same manner as specified for original plantings. 3.9.2 Submit monthly written reports to Landscape Architect identifying:.1 Maintenance work carried out..2 Development and condition of plant material..3 Replacement plantings and date of installation..4 Preventative or corrective measures required which are outside Contractor's responsibility. TOPSOIL AND FINE GRADING PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 SCOPE OF WORK 1.1.1 This Section specifies topsoil, topsoil amendments, the stripping of topsoil, the preparation of existing grades, the placing of topsoil and finish grading. 1.2 RELATED SECTIONS 1.2.1 Section [02231 - Clearing and Grubbing] : Clearing of brush, weeds and grasses prior to topsoil stripping. 1.2.2 Section [02311 - Site Grading] : Preparation of subgrade and excavation for planting beds. 1.3 MEASUREMENT PROCEDURES 1.3.1 Preparation of sub-grade for placing of topsoil will not be measured for payment. 1.3.2 Topsoil stripping will not be measured for payment. 1.3.3 Where topsoil to be used is from existing onsite stockpile:.1 Placing of topsoil will be measured in cubic metres removed from stockpile. Stockpiles will be measured by Consultant and volume of topsoil removed calculated by average end area method..2 Supply and application of soil amendments, including fertilizer, will be measured in square metres of area treated as determined by Consultant. 1.3.4 Where topsoil is to be supplied by Contractor:.1 Supplying, placing and spreading topsoil will be measured in cubic metres as determined from actual surface area covered and depth of topsoil specified..2 Specified depth of topsoil shall be measured and approved by Consultant after settlement and consolidation as specified. 1.3.5 Finish grading will be measured in square metres from actual surface measurements as determined by Consultant. 1.4 DEFINITIONS 1.4.1 COMPOST: A mixture of soil and decomposing organic matter used as a fertilizer, mulch, or soil conditioner. Compost is processed organic matter containing 40% or more organic matter as determined by the Walkley-Black or LOI test. Product must be sufficiently decomposed (i.e. stable) so that any further decomposition does not adversely affect plant growth (C:N ratio below 25), and contain no toxic or growth inhibiting contaminates. Composed bio-solids must meet the requirements of the Guidelines for Compost Quality, Category A produced by the Canadian Council of the Ministers of the Environment (CCME), January 1996. TOPSOIL AND FINE GRADING 2.3.1 Advise Consultant of sources of topsoil or manufactured topsoil to be utilized with sufficient lead time to allow for testing. 2.3.2 Contractor is responsible for amendments to supply topsoil as specified. 2.3.3 When required, testing of topsoil will be carried out by testing laboratory designated by Consultant..1 Soil sampling, testing and analysis to be in accordance with Provincial standards..2 Soil testing to determine soil ph, P and K amounts, and organic matter. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 STRIPPING OF TOPSOIL 3.1.1 Commence topsoil stripping of areas, as indicated on drawings or as directed by Consultant, after area has been cleared of brush, weeds and grasses and removed from site. 3.1.2 Strip topsoil to depths, as indicated on drawings or as directed by Consultant. Avoid mixing topsoil with subsoil where textural quality will be moved outside acceptable range of intended application. 3.1.3 Stockpile in locations as directed by Consultant or as indicated on drawings. Stockpile height not to exceed 2m. 3.1.4 Disposal of unused topsoil is to be in an environmentally responsible manner as directed by Consultant. 3.1.5 Protect stockpiles from contamination and compaction. 3.2 PREPARATION OF EXISTING GRADE 3.2.1 Verify that subgrades are correct. If discrepancies occur, notify Consultant and do not commence work until instructed by Consultant. 3.2.2 Grade soil to eliminate uneven areas and low spots, and ensure positive drainage. 3.2.3 Remove debris, roots, branches, stones in excess of 50mm diameter and other deleterious materials. Remove soil contaminated with calcium chloride, toxic materials and petroleum products. Remove debris which protrudes more than 75 mm above surface. Dispose of removed material off site. 3.2.4 Cultivate entire area which is to receive topsoil to minimum depth of 100mm. Cross cultivate those areas where equipment used for hauling and spreading has compacted soil. 3.3 PLACING AND SPREADING OF TOPSOIL/PLANTING SOIL 3.3.1 Place topsoil only after Consultant has accepted subgrade. TOPSOIL AND FINE GRADING 3.3.2 Spread topsoil in uniform layers not exceeding 150 mm. 3.3.3 For areas to be sodded keep topsoil 15 mm below finished grade. 3.3.4 Spread topsoil as indicated on drawings or to following minimum depths after settlement..1 150 mm for seeded areas..2 135 mm for sodded areas..3 300 mm for flower beds..4 500 mm for shrub beds. 3.3.5 Manually spread topsoil/planting soil around trees, shrubs and obstacles. 3.4 SOIL AMENDMENTS 3.4.1 Soil amendments will only be added to correct any deficiencies, as determined by the soil testing of existing or supplied topsoil 3.4.2 Soil amendments added as indicated on drawings or to following minimum depths after settlement. 3.5 FINISH GRADING.1 150 mm for seeded areas..2 135 mm for sodded areas..3 300 mm for flower beds..4 450 mm for shrub and tree beds. 3.5.1 Grade to eliminate rough spots and low areas and ensure positive drainage. Prepare loose friable bed by means of cultivation and subsequent raking. 3.5.2 Consolidate topsoil to required bulk density using equipment approved by Consultant. Leave surfaces smooth, uniform and firm against deep footprinting. 3.6 ACCEPTANCE 3.6.1 Consultant will inspect and test topsoil in place and determine acceptance of material, depth of topsoil and finish grading. 3.7 SURPLUS MATERIAL 3.7.1 Dispose of materials except topsoil not required as directed by Consultant.
