Karen is originally from Michigan where she began raising orchids around 1975. She was a member of the Michigan Orchid Society and held all of the offices of the Society including show chair, program chair, vice president and president. Karen became an accredited American Orchid Society Judge in 1997. In 1998, she was transferred by her Company, Lincoln Mercury, to Irvine, California and retired in January 2002. Karen also served 5 years as the American Orchid Society Chair of the Pacific South Judging Region and has traveled to Canada, Guatemala, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, South Africa, England and Japan to attend and judge orchid shows. She has lectured on the Society circuit in the US, including the California Paphiopedilum Guild, the Slipper Alliance, NCOS (National Capital Orchid Society) Paphiopedilum Forum, two South African Paphiopedilum Conferences and the Paph Forum in London, England. Page 2 Scenes from the May Meeting From the Member s Corner From the Members Corner. There were no guests at the Mothers' Day meeting; but 22 wonderful people came to visit my greenhouses, some brought plants for silent auction and a free raffle, others brought great food. Apparently everyone had a good time and it was our pleasure to have everyone. If you didn't have an opportunity to visit or see everything while you were here, just send me an e-mail or a call and we can get together for a visit. Thank you again to everyone who stopped by. Edie Gulrich, Membership Secretary

Page 3 President s Message Hi, Everyone - Our May meeting took place at the home of Edie Gulrich. We toured Edie's new greenhouse which is set up with auto-misters and humidity controls, and provides her with lots of room to grow her Bulbophyllums. All present enjoyed some great refreshments and a lively "show and tell" session. Our June meeting will take place at the Placentia Public Library. We need to begin planning for our annual auction in October. (Board members, board meeting after the club meeting) See you at the meeting. Darrell Lovell, President Editor s Potting Bench Edie, thanks for your hospitality! With all that new greenhouse space, guess you need more orchids Orchid Digest Speakers Day is always a don t miss event. What could be better than a day wallowing in orchid information with other orchid enthusiasts? This year, rather than focusing on one group of genera (wonderful for who happen to grow the orchids under discussion but maybe not sufficiently motivating for those who don t), each speaker has a different area of specialty. There should be something to capture the fancy of EVERY orchid lover. The vendors tend to bring carefully selected special and interesting plants, since they have a more sophisticated and discriminating audience than at most shows. So the shopping is wonderful, too. Get there early, so that you can spend a little time exploring the grounds of the Huntington, as well. See you there on July 7! I hope that you had a chance to get a good look at those Gongoras that Nick Braemer brought to the meeting at Edie s. That wheeled clothes rack is a wonderful way to display them. Just transporting plants with 3 pendulous inflorescences is a monumental task! One of my favorites is Gongora scaphephorus. I have a small one, that had come and gone by meeting time. I showed mine the pictures from the meeting, so it knows what it SHOULD look like. Viewing that grand presentation from a distance, though, one misses a chance to appreciate a truly fantastic flower. Here s what it looks like up close. (See: Editor s Potting Bench, Page 4)

Page 4 Editor s Potting Bench, from Page 3 Here s another view of Gongora scaphephorus. house. I eagerly await Karen Muir s talk on Maxillarias. It is such a varied genus, and I am finding quite a few of them to grow and love. So here are a few of them, to whet your appetite. Roberta Fox, Editor Max. picta Those who visited my house in April had a chance to see my 12 Sobralia caliglossa in all its glory. We don t see a lot of Sobralias at meetings since even the more modest-sized species get big enough that they are not particularly portable. All of them are not huge, though. At the other extreme is Sobralia callosa (don t get the rather similar names confused ) This 7 plant recently bloomed for the first time for me. Unfortunately, the flower is very thin, and only lasts for a day or two. As I write this, I see two new buds (it is a successive bloomer like many Sobralias), so I hope that it will wait until the day of the meeting not before and not after since it is a beautiful but ephemeral flower. Unlike many of the familiar Sobralias, Sob. callosa is an intermediate to warm grower, and so grows in my green- Max. huebschii Max. pseudoreichenheimiana Max. scalariformis The long and short of it Sobralia caliglossa and Sobralia callosa
