MARINE EQUIPMENT TESTING AND CERTIFICATION PRESENTATION OF SERVICES PROVIDED BY ISTITUTO GIORDANO SPA FOR THE MARINE EQUIPMENT The WHEELMARK Certification in accordance with the European Directive 96/98/EC on Marine Equipment (as amended by 2010/68/EU that will go into force in the coming weeks) is required for the equipment to be placed on board a European Community ship, but the same kind of testing is needed in general for equipment to be used on ships covered by the SOLAS International Convention. In force of the agreement between the European Community and the United States of America several products which have been assessed according to the MED Directive can be given also a number valid for the USCG (US Coast Guard) approval in the United States. We would like to advise that Istituto Giordano S.p.A. is a Notified Body to issue certification for Marine Equipment materials and/or products for use on board ships in accordance with Directive 96/98/EC on Marine Equipment as amended, SOLAS Convention and applicable IMO regulations (Authorization decree of the Italian Administration (Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport) dated 5 th February 2003, published in the Official Journal of the Italian Republic, General Series No. 47, dated 26/02/2003). **Istituto Giordano S.p.A. has its own in-house Laboratories for product conformity testing** Testing programs shall also be done at the place of production, with the presence of Istituto Giordano staff or by recognition of local laboratories, when the conditions occur. **This guarantee short certification times**
pag. 2 di 7 The MED European Directive Conformity Assessment Modules To affix the so called wheelmark (see figure above) the certification process consists of two different modules: a Type-Examination Module (Module B) which consists of a series of tests on samples representative of the production of the equipment which has to be placed on the market; a Conformity Module (Module D, E, F) which consists of an inspection on the series products (single batches) or on the production process to assess conformity to the certified Type. The applicable Conformity Assessment Modules and the relevant testing program depend on the product. Laboratory testing and in some cases performance tests with human subjects are typical stages of a Type-Examination. Istituto Giordano deals at the moment with two main categories of products: - Lifesaving appliances Annex A.1/1.( ) to the MED Directive - Fire protection equipment Annex A.1/3.( ) to the MED Directive A detailed list of products that can be tested and certified by Istituto Giordano according to above is enclosed. Other tests can be executed according to ISO standards for lifesaving appliances to be put on recreational crafts. Some typical examples: 1) Position-indicating lights for lifesaving appliances Tests to be executed Light and chromaticity tests Resistance tests under conditions of intended use
pag. 3 di 7 2) Immersion suits Thermal protective tests Tests to be executed General resistance and performance tests
pag. 4 di 7 3) Inflatable liferafts (IMO tests for MED Directive or ISO 9650 tests for leisure applications) Did you know? In-water performance tests Tests to be executed Materials resistance tests Starting from next January some tests according to IMO MSC.81(70) on liferafts shall be repeated due to amendments on occupants weight coming into force (from 75 to 82,5 kg)
