Please read these instructions carefully before using the product. WARNING: Whenever the cleaner is in use, due to the risk of entrapment in rotating parts, keep loose clothing, hair, fingers etc. away from the brush bar, nozzle and any hand-held accessories. WARNING: Disconnect from the mains supply before carrying out any routine maintenance, such as cleaning any blockages, changing any filters or accessing the floor nozzle. This appliance can be used by children aged from 8 years and above and persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, if they have been given supervision or instruction concerning the use of the appliance in a safe way and understand the hazards involved. Children shall not play with the appliance. Cleaning and user maintenance shall not be undertaken by children without supervision. Personal safety WARNING: Only lift the product by the carry handle (1) or dust canister handle (5) and never pick the cleaner up by the floor nozzle. Always disconnect the appliance from the mains supply after use. Never use in the presence of explosive liquid or vapours. Never pick up inflammable or poisonous liquids such as petrol, copier toner or other volatile substances. Never pick up acids, asbestos or asbestos dust. Never touch the plug or cable with wet hands. Do not immerse cord, plug or cleaner in water or other liquid. The appliance must never be left running unsupervised. Location Do not use or keep this product outside. Do not store the appliance near hot surfaces eg. ovens or heating appliances. Mains cable WARNING: A damaged or severed mains cable fitted with a plug should never be connected to the mains supply. It must be destroyed, as a damaged cable becomes hazardous if connected to a power socket. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent, or similarly qualified person to avoid a hazard. Do not allow the mains lead to become strained or run this appliance over it. Product safety Never use the appliance without the filters being installed. Never use the appliance to vacuum hot ashes, broken glass, sharp objects or liquids. Use only Morphy Richards spare parts and accessories. Never modify the cleaner in any way. Repairs to electrical appliances are only to be undertaken by trained professionals. Unprofessional repairs can be dangerous for users. Electrical requirements Check that the voltage on the rating plate of your appliance corresponds with your house electricity supply which must be A.C. (Alternating Current). If the socket outlets in your home are not suitable for the plug supplied with this appliance the plug should be removed and the appropriate one fitted. Should the fuse in the mains plug require changing, a 13 amp BS136 fuse must be fitted.

VC7340MUK Rev1_Instruction Book 30/04/01 1:17 Page 4 Using in upright mode / Assembly 1 Attach the tube/handle (1) to the main body of the cleaner. Turn the rotatable cord storage cleat (0) to release the power cord (17). Plug in to the mains outlet. To keep the cord away from the floor brush, locate in the cord hook (3). 3 Settings for the floor brush height adjustment dial (10) Tools Deep pile carpet Deep to medium pile carpet Medium pile carpet Smooth carpet and hard floors Rotate the floor brush height adustment dial (10) to suit the floor being vacuumed (refer to table above). 4 5 Switch on the vacuum cleaner by pressing the power pedal (6). 7 6 Release from the upright position by pressing the upright release pedal (18) with your foot. IMPORTANT: To prevent damage to carpets, never leave the cleaner switched on in one place for an extended period. When full, or after use, empty the dust canister (8). Press the dust canister release button (4) to remove the dust canister from the vacuum cleaner. Press the dust canister empty button (7) to open the base of the dust canister, releasing the contents into a bin or a bag. Allergy sufferers may wish to seal the bag around the dust canister before emptying to prevent dust escaping. 4

VC7340MUK Rev1_Instruction Book 30/04/01 1:17 Page 5 Using tools and accessories Release the power cord (17) and plug in to the mains outlet as in step of Using in upright mode / Assembly. 1 Remove the tube/handle (1) by pressing the tube release button (19) and pulling the handle upwards. 3 Remove the hose suction end (3) from the side hose outlet (4) on the side of the vacuum cleaner. 4 Attach the hose suction end (3) to the handle hose inlet () and the desired tool to the tube end of the handle (1). Rotate the floor brush height adustment dial (10) fully in a clockwise direction to the tools setting (see table on point 3, page 4). Tools and accessories Never over extend the hose such that the cleaner is pulled over. IMPORTANT: Only use the tools when the product is in the parked position. Also, turning the cleaner sideways helps prevent the cleaner being pulled along by the stretch hose. Hand-held turbo nozzle (13) (certain models only) The hand-held turbo nozzle is ideal for picking up hair and fibres from stairs and upholstery. The hand-held turbo nozzle will not rotate until it makes contact with the surface being cleaned. Crevice tool (1) The crevice tool is ideal for awkward places, corners, and behind radiators etc. Dusting brush (1) The dusting brush is ideal for vacuuming pelmets and delicate objects and surfaces. The dusting brush is attached to the crevice tool and may be accessed by pressing the release button on the side and pulling the dusting brush to the end of the crevice tool. Cleaning the Hand-held turbo nozzle (13) (certain models only) The Turbo Nozzle should be regularly cleaned and any hairs or fibres wrapped around the brush bar removed to maintain optimum performance. 5

VC7340MUK Rev1_Instruction Book 30/04/01 1:17 Page 6 Tool storage The hand-held turbo nozzle (13) and crevice tool with dust brush attachment (1) may be stored in the designated spaces (14 & 5 respectively) on the sides of the vacuum cleaner. Storage When finished cleaning, switch off the appliance and remove the plug from the mains supply and wind the cord around the cord storage cleats (0/). Safety cut-out If the cleaner overheats, a motor protection thermostat will automatically switch the motor off. If this happens, switch the cleaner off, unplug from the power supply and leave the cleaner to cool for at least 60 minutes. Check the airways for blockages, empty the dust canister and clean the filters before restarting. Maintenance - Filters The guarantee may be invalidated if the motor is damaged due to: using the appliance without the filters installed; not cleaning the filters; or not replacing damaged filters. Cleaning the dust canister filter (7) To maintain suction, the dust canister filter must be cleaned each time the dust canister (8) is emptied. 1. To access the filter, remove the filter assembly by removing the dust canister lid (6). Turn the lid anti-clockwise until it clicks.. Lift out the filter assembly and disassemble. 3. Wash the dust canister filter in cold water and thoroughly air dry before re-fitting. IMPORTANT: Do not wash filter with hot water or detergents. IMPORTANT: Do not use heated appliances to dry filter. 4. Replace the dust canister filter and re-assemble the dust canister. Cleaning the exhaust filter (9) The exhaust filter (9) must be cleaned at least every three months. The exhaust filter is located underneath the dust canister (8). 1. Remove the dust canister.. Remove the exhaust filter cover (7) by turning the lid anti-clockwise until it clicks. 7 7 9 3. Lift out the exhaust filter (9). 4. Wash in cold water and thoroughly air dry before re-fitting. IMPORTANT: Do not wash filter with hot water or detergents. IMPORTANT: Do not use heated appliances to dry filter. 5. Replace the exhaust filter, the exhaust filter cover and the dust canister. 6

VC7340MUK Rev1_Instruction Book 30/04/01 1:17 Page 7 Maintenance - Changing the Belt Refitting brush bar and belt 6. Hook the belt over the drive shaft (the belt must be slid sideways past the end of the drive shaft). If the brush bar stops rotating, it is likely that the drive belt has snapped (usually because the brush has been stalled). Replacement belts can be obtained from Morphy Richards by calling the spare parts helpline number: 0844 873 076. Accessing the floor nozzle 1. Press the power pedal (6) to turn the cleaner off.. Disconnect the cleaner from the mains supply. 3. Press the upright release pedal (18) and place the cleaner face down, in a flat position on a soft surface (eg. carpet). Removing brush bar and belt 4. Using a cross-headed screwdriver, unscrew the 5 screws on the base of the cleaner to release the L-shaped plate from over the rotary brush bar. Drive shaft 7. Pass the rotary brush bar through the belt, ensuring the correct end is located against the belt. Screw points 8. Pull the rotary brush bar forward (against the pull of the belt) and locate the square ends of the brush bar into location slots in the floor nozzle. 5. Remove the broken belt and lift out the rotary brush bar. 9. Rotate the brush bar by hand to ensure the belt is running in the centre of its location on the brush. Refitting the floor nozzle base cover 10. Refit the L-shaped plate over the rotary brush bar, and screw the 5 screws back into the base of the cleaner, using a cross-headed screwdriver, do not overtighten the screws. 11. Return the cleaner to the upright position. Connect to the mains supply. Switch on to test. 7

Please refer to the 1 year guarantee for more information. Your 1 year guarantee To qualify for the 1 year guarantee, the appliance must have been used according to the instructions supplied. It is important to retain the retailer s receipt as proof of purchase. Staple your receipt to this back cover for future reference. Please quote the following information if the product develops a fault. These numbers can be found on the base of the product. Model no. Serial no. All Morphy Richards products are individually tested before leaving the factory. In the unlikely event of any appliance proving to be faulty within 8 days of purchase, it should be returned to the place of purchase for it to be replaced. If the fault develops after 8 days and within 1 months (4 months if registered) of original purchase, you should contact the Helpline number quoting Model number and Serial number on the product, or write to Morphy Richards at the address shown. You may be asked to return a copy of proof of purchase. Subject to the exclusions set out below (see Exclusions), the faulty appliance will then be repaired or replaced and dispatched usually within 7 working days of receipt. If you suspect a fault, follow the simple checks detailed below before retrying the appliance or calling the helpline. Check the filters for blockages and clean. Check the tools / tubes for blockages. Check the plug is firmly in the socket. Check the socket is working by trying another appliance. Check the fuse in the plug. If the filters were blocked or another blockage was noted, IF YOU ARE HAVING A PROBLEM WITH ONE OF OUR PRODUCTS, CALL OUR HELPLINE: leave the product switched off for 60 minutes and retry switching on (as safety cut-out may have activated). If, for any reason, this item is replaced during the 1 year guarantee period, the guarantee on the new item will be calculated from original purchase date. Therefore it is vital to retain your original till receipt or invoice to indicate the date of initial purchase. To qualify for the 1 year guarantee, the appliance must have been used according to the instructions supplied. This appliance is intended for domestic use only. Misuse or use for commercial or any other purpose will render the guarantee invalid. Exclusions Morphy Richards shall not be liable to replace or repair the goods under the terms of the guarantee where: 1 The fault has been caused or is attributable to accidental use, misuse, negligent use or used contrary to the manufacturer s recommendations or where the fault has been caused by power surges or damage caused in transit. The appliance has been used on a voltage supply other than that stamped on the products. 3 Repairs have been attempted by persons other than our service staff (or authorised dealer). 4 The appliance has been used for hire purposes or non domestic use. 5 The appliance is second hand. 6 Morphy Richards reserves the right not to carry out any type of servicing under the guarantee at its discretion. 7 The guarantee excludes consumables such as filters and the belt. This guarantee does not confer any rights other than those expressly set out above and does not cover any claims for consequential loss or damage. This guarantee is offered as an additional benefit and does not affect your statutory rights as a consumer. Morphy Richards products are intended for household use only.
