The World s Premier Horticultural Display...every day of the year Longwood Gardens is sure to delight anyone who loves exquisite flowers, majestic trees, and opulent architecture. Here, amid 1,050 outdoor acres and 20 indoor gardens, you ll find perfection at every turn. EXALT in the Conservatory filled with exotic plants and never-ending bloom, even in winter. ENJOY one of 400 performing arts events, from concerts on a 62-bell carillon to fully staged musical productions. LEARN the fascinating history of the Gardens in the former residence of Longwood s founders. STROLL acres of outdoor gardens overflowing with luxuriant flowers and sparkling fountains. MARVEL at giant waterplatters soaking up the summer sun. ENHANCE your gardening know-how with daily programs and classes. DELIGHT in rainbowhued fountains on summer evenings and in December. CELEBRATE seasonal festivals, from spring indoors in January to 400,000 lights outdoors in December.

In 1700, George Peirce acquired 402 acres from William Penn. Peirce s descendants farmed the land and, in 1798, began planting an arboretum that by 1850 was one of the finest in the nation. The farm was purchased in 1906 by Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954) to preserve the trees, and from 1907 until 1954 he personally designed most of what is enjoyed today. Since then, Longwood Gardens has matured into a magnificent horticultural showplace filled with countless opportunities for learning and enjoyment.

Longwood now encompasses 1,050 acres of gardens, woodlands, and meadows; 20 outdoor gardens; 20 indoor gardens within 4 acres of greenhouses; 11,000 different types of plants; spectacular illuminated fountains; extensive educational programs including horticultural career training and internships; and 800 events each year, from flower shows, gardening demonstrations, courses, and children s programs to concerts, organ recitals, musical theatre, and fireworks. Garden features shown above include (left to right) the Idea Garden, Chimes Tower, Main Fountain Garden, Conservatory, Topiary Garden, Terrace Restaurant, Peircedu Pont House, Open Air Theatre, Rose Arbor, Flower Garden Walk, Italian Water Garden, and Lakes.
