Welcome to Orlando and Orange County Florida! Located in the heart of Florida, Orange County and Orlando are internationally known for their extraordinary theme parks. From Disney to Universal to Sea World, the area attracts more than 50 million visitors a year. Although tourism has been part of the history of central Florida since the late 19th century, small rural towns built around agriculture truly characterized this region until the dramatic growth of the late 20th century. The America in Bloom Symposium & Awards Program offers a unique opportunity to gain insight into this remarkable region and meet some extraordinary people who are making a difference in their communities. We will visit AIB City Winter Garden, the charming little city with a juicy past. We will have an early morning before-the-park-opens tour of Epcot s World Showcase. We will visit Leu Gardens, one of the truly great urban botanic gardens. Thanks to a wonderful partnership with the Florida Nursery Growers & Landscape Association (FNGLA), we will experience The Landscape Show, one of the largest and most impressive horticultural trade shows in the country. With each of these experiences, we will find numerous best ideas for our own communities. Most importantly, we will have the opportunity to meet some exceptional speakers and community leaders. If you have never been to Central Florida, you will want to extend your stay to visit the theme parks. In 2013, the America in Bloom symposium will be held in conjunction with The Landscape Show, a horticulture industry trade show in Orlando. AIB has a block of hotel rooms at the Rosen Plaza Hotel. To make your reservation, call 877-414-7997. Please know that when you call this number, you will be speaking with the company managing the hotel reservation system for the entire Landscape Show Event, which uses many areas hotels. When you call this number you must indicate that you wish to reserve at the Rosen Plaza Hotel, and tell them you are with the America in Bloom symposium. Reserve your hotel rooms early! Educational Sessions Thursday, September 19 8:30 a.m. Mayors Breakfast Reception at Orange County Convention Center (By Invitation Only) Honoring all mayors! Central Florida and AIB city mayors will be invited to a very special Mayors Reception hosted by AIB and the Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association (FNGLA). While enjoying a continental breakfast, the mayors will meet AIB and FNGLA leaders and will attend a presentation by Peter Kageyama, author of For the Love of Cities. Mayors will then be offered a VIP tour of FNGLA s The Landscape Show. 10 a.m AIB Judges Training at Orange County Convention Center (By Invitation Only) 5:30 p.m. Cocktail Reception Your AIB registration includes admission to The Landscape Show and its related activities. The Landscape Show invites you to the Opening Night Cocktail Reception at the Rosen Plaza Hotel. This is an informal event where AIB and The Landscape Show attendees can get acquainted. 7 p.m. America in Bloom Outstanding Achievement Awards Banquet We kick off the 2013 AIB Symposium at the Rosen Plaza Hotel with this celebration of your achievements. This is a time for food, fun, and lots of awards! AIB Outstanding Achievement Award winners will be announced, followed by the AIB You Tube Video Award winner and some surprise AIB Special Awards. 8:30 p.m. Presentation to Our Honored Guest Friday, September 20 7:45 a.m. Buses Leave for Epcot s World Showcase 8:30 a.m. Tour of Epcot s World Showcase A Focus on Overall Impression Walt Disney was a visionary who believed that you could connect with people through storytelling. Join the Walt Disney World Horticulture cast as they share their experience in planning the gardens of World Showcase including bedding plants, hanging baskets, and containers. They will describe how these garden elements highlight the differences between countries and really bring the stories of international cultures to life. Trees, perennial gardens, permanent plantings, graphics, lighting, and site furnishings in guest areas play a critical role in unifying the experience and delivering the overall impression. Disney landscape architects will discuss some recent projects and how their design process includes storytelling as a means to create beauty and magic. This tour will enhance your understanding of the features that define a welcoming space and will offer many ideas to take home to your own community. Buses will return to the Rosen Plaza Hotel at 11 a.m.
12 p.m. Lunch with Keynote Speaker Peter Kageyama, author of For the Love of Cities When we love a city, we are committed to it, we engage with it, we care for it, we give our best to it. A city that is loved also gives back. It makes those who live there feel enriched. These words are from author, consultant, and community champion Peter Kageyama. He will share his experiences identifying love notes that a city offers its citizens to create passionate involvement. Peter will share what it means to have a relationship with a place, why it matters, how such a relationship grows, how it can die, and how to better understand it. 1:30 p.m. Concurrent Sessions The Great Water Challenge Transforming Water Problems into Places of Beauty Dr. Marty Wanielista, Professional Engineer, University of Central Florida Flooding, storm water runoff, and pollution of our waterways are problems for many towns and cities. There are cost effective, sustainable, and beautiful solutions to these problems. Bio-gardens and roof gardens are concepts taking root to intentionally provide space with trees and plants for storm water retention so as to reduce flooding and pollution. Craving Local How Locally-Grown Food is Revitalizing Communities John Rife, Founder of the Winter Park Harvest Festival and Owner of East End Market, Orlando Powerful memories are created when we grow and eat locally distinct and seasonally available foods. The journey from local garden to local plate establishes an important sense of place and a critical sense of community. 2:30 p.m. Concurrent Sessions The Economic Impact of Beautification in Cities Dr. Charlie Hall, Texas A & M University There is now significant data to demonstrate the economic, environmental, social, and health benefits of flowers, shrubs, and trees. This session will provide thought-provoking evidence of the power of plants and quality landscapes and why they are necessities not mere luxuries in our lives. Out on a Limb Innovative Strategies for Ensuring a Healthy Urban Forest Edith Makra, Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, Chicago Trees are critically important to the quality of life in our towns and cities. From small towns in Massachusetts to large cities like Chicago, Edith Makra has seen how trees and the people who care about them make communities better. Edith will share how community volunteers, municipal officials, and business leaders can all work together to find effective and sometimes innovative ways to protect, preserve, and enhance the urban forest.
Experience AIB City Winter Garden 4 p.m. Buses Leave for the City of Winter Garden 5 p.m. Presentations in the Historic Garden Theatre Mayor John Rees will welcome America in Bloom to Winter Garden where the beautifully landscaped West Orange Trail weaves through the center of the historic downtown. Kay Cappleman, Director of the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation, will tell the fascinating story of how Winter Garden has reinvented itself from a rural agricultural center to a thriving community with a sense of its small town past and a tangible excitement for the future. Mona Phipps, Vice President of Friends of Lake Apopka, will share the remarkable story of grassroots efforts to restore and revitalize Lake Apopka once a sport fishing mecca to its death from agricultural pollution to resurgence as a center for ecotourism in Central Florida. 6 p.m. Guided Walking Tours of Winter Garden and Dinner on Your Own Winter Garden volunteer leaders will guide us to the Railroad Museum, the Heritage Museum, the historic Bond Building, and the Green Sky Growers where fish and vegetables are being produced on a roof top. For dinner on your own, you may select from many different cuisines that are offered in the historic downtown district. You will be joined by members of the local America in Bloom Committee. 9 p.m. Buses Return to the Hotel Saturday, September 21 Experience The Landscape Show A Focus on Horticulture 8 a.m. Shuttle to Orange County Convention Center 8:30 a.m. Continental Breakfast & Welcome: The Landscape Show as a Resource for Communities The Florida Nursery, Growers & Landscape Association (FNGLA) welcomes America in Bloom to The Landscape Show at the Orange County Convention Center. With more than 400 vendors and nearly 7,000 attendees, The Landscape Show is considered the premier nursery and landscape trade event for the southeastern U.S. Your morning at The Landscape Show begins with a pre-show welcome by FNGLA Past President and Florida State Representative Halsey Beshears. You will then receive a VIP tour designed to feature exhibitors who demonstrate plants, products, and services of value to communities. At The Landscape Show Demonstration Stage you ll have a chance to see two demonstrations developed specifically for AIB attendees. Demonstration Stage 9:30 a.m. Hanging Baskets for Main Street Heather Will Browne and Linda Holland, Disney s Horticulture. Heather has been creating flowering hanging baskets for over 30 years. Calling on her vast experience and extraordinary creativity, she will share practical handson tips to be successful with hanging baskets in the landscape. Linda is currently responsible for production of over 500 flowering hanging baskets a year at Walt Disney World.
10 a.m. Adding Drama Downtown with Containers Keri Leymaster, University of Florida Extension Service and formerly horticulturist at Orlando Sea World. With her passion for plants and keen eye for great design, Keri will demonstrate dramatic plant combinations that are easy to maintain and enhance the urban environment 10:30 a.m. Lunch on Your Own as You Explore The Landscape Show 12:30 p.m. Lunch is on your own so you can take your time exploring this horticulture showcase. A food court is located inside The Landscape Show for your convenience. 12:30 p.m. Meet with Your Judges These sessions are set up for cities to meet with their judges. Leu Gardens 4:30 p.m. Tour of Leu Gardens A Focus on the Environment Leu Gardens Director and AIB Judge, Robert Bowden has invited us to visit Orlando s premier botanic garden. With gigantic live oaks draped with Spanish moss, this beautiful garden has some of the finest collections of subtropical plants in the country. Tours specially designed for AIB attendees will share some of the innovative environmental efforts taken on by Orlando in the past decade and will demonstrate the value of a local botanic garden as a resource for its community. 4:30 p.m. Silent Auction & Cocktails Our evening of celebration starts with a cash bar reception and Silent Auction bidding. This is your ONLY chance to check out the Silent Auction. 7 p.m. America in Bloom Population Category Awards Banquet The excitement goes into high gear with more food, fun, and awards. The John R. Holmes III Community Champion Award winner will be announced along with the Population Category Award winners and the final AIB Special Awards. Special Programs New This Year! Photo by WDWMAGIC Epcot s World Showcase Epcot at Walt Disney World includes two major areas, Future World and World Showcase. We will be visiting World Showcase, an ongoing World s Fair of 11 pavilions that encircles a picturesque 40-acre lagoon. The cuisine, culture, history, gardens, and architecture of these countries are permanently displayed along a 1.2-mile promenade. Pavilions replicate familiar landmarks and present representative street scenes and urban plazas from the host countries. Lovely gardens many of them tucked away off the beaten track are incorporated into this busy urban environment. Some of the most creative and dramatic hanging baskets and containers are displayed in the gardens of World Showcase. Mayor s Breakfast Reception Prior to the start of the AIB Symposium, mayors from across the country can come together to network and discover important information about the horticulture industry and its critical link to communities.
