Volume 2, Issue 1 January, 2014 Pg. 6 President s Message In July, 1966, Mr. W. Hamor called a meeting at his home to discuss forming an orchid society. Forty charter members started EAOS that first year. EAOS first judged show took place in 1969 at Englewood Savings and Loan. Manatee, Sarasota, Venice, and Port Charlotte Societies attended that show. EAOS won Best Plant in Show and Best Society Display. Two thousand people visited our first show. The 50th anniversary of EAOS is fast approaching in 2016. The success of our club depends upon members volunteering their time to do the three shows that we do every year (Sarasota, Venice, and our own), as well as other activities such as our annual plant sale in October, garden tours, raffles, meeting programs, and serving as officers of our club. The number of members helping with these activities is at an all-time low. Our executive board has discussed doing away with shows and other activities because of the lack of adequate help from our members. Volunteering is a part of your commitment as an EAOS member. We need at least 8 hours per year from every member. No experience needed! Don t be a freeloader, expecting others to carry your load. Just call me or come to our next meeting and sign up to help. During the holidays, I visited Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Their orchid displays featured a 15-foot Phalaenopsis Christmas tree and several Phalaenopsis chandeliers.
