2 Talk of the Town Talk of The Town 3 Bukit Panjang Community Garden Day Bountiful harvests Bukit Panjang, the first constituency with the most number of community gardens, has proudly entered the Singapore Book of Records! It was hard to miss the palpable excitement that filled the air for over 300 community gardeners gathered at the community hall adjacent to Blocks 226 and 229 Pending Road. Held on 17 December 2017, the Bukit Panjang Community Garden Day celebrated the dedicated efforts of all who contributed to the 15 flourishing community gardens and bore witness to the significant milestone. These community gardens which form an intraconstituency garden trail, are effective in reducing carbon footprints and serve as platforms for community bonding and experiential learning for all age groups. A giant veggie growing competition, and gardening workshop organised by the National Parks Board were also lined up for residents. Eager to bring home the upsized greens harvested by the community gardeners, residents made their purchases happily with all proceeds going to charity. 6 Talk of the Town Talk of The Town 7 Toh Yi Community Garden Harvest Day With festive lanterns, colourful floral arrangements and auspicious decorations all in place, Toh Yi Community Garden welcomed a bountiful Lunar New Year Harvest on 10 February 2018. Together with community gardeners and residents, Ms Sim Ann and Mr Sim Eng Tong, CEO of Biomax Technologies, took part in the harvest and visited the Biomax BioMini Digester site. The introduction of the Biomax BioMini Digester is a big step towards tackling food waste and achieving an eco-friendly and sustainable cycle of planting, growing and recycling. This nifty machine converts all foodrelated waste into organic, odourless and pathogenfree fertilisers, allowing community gardeners and volunteers to continue growing healthy and organic greens for the community. The enriching morning was nicely rounded off with a viewing of the photo collage of the largest vegetables grown at the community garden in 2017 while everyone enjoyed delightful snacks amid happy chatter. Zhenghua Tree Planting Residents were up bright and early to join Mr Liang Eng Hwa and grassroots leaders on a trail to keep the neighbourhood clean. With tongs and trash bags in hand, the exercise is a timely reminder for all that little actions can go a long way to help cleaners maintain the cleanliness of their living environment! The morning was also made extra special for residents who planted 50 Syzygium Myrtifolium trees with their friends and family at the field beside Segar Palmview Link House. Bukit Panjang Tree Planting Day The rain that persisted through the morning quickly stopped as Bukit Panjang constituency got ready for their annual Tree Planting Day. With the sun shining bright, Dr Teo Ho Pin and grassroots volunteers picked up their shovels to plant 23 young Cyrtostachys lakkas along the void deck of Block 253 Bangkit Road. A common variety of plant in Singapore, it can be recognised by its palm leaves and striking red trunk. After settling the plants into their new homes, the volunteers were treated to a sumptuous lunch below the block as a way of thanking them for their tireless contributions to the community!
