April, 2010 Philadelphia Section AIHA Newsletter April 2010 Half-Day Professional Development Course Green Buildings In today s business environment, it is important for EHS professionals to be knowledgeable about a variety of related subjects. With the push on for energy conservation, more and more facilities are looking to either build new, or retrofit existing buildings to be green. The Philadelphia Section AIHA s April half-day Professional Development Course will provide insight into the planning, construction and operation of a LEED Gold-certified building. The meeting will take place at Aerzen USA in Coatesville, PA, the first Gold-certified manufacturing facility in Pennsylvania. Aerzen is a worldwide leading manufacturer of high-quality positive displacement blowers, compressors and vacuum pumps. As the Aerzen USA subsidiary, Aerzen USA assembles packages, maintains and overhauls machines, and provides support for its customers from its Coatesville headquarters. Starting in early 2005, Aerzen USA began developing plans to build a new, green office and manufacturing space. The facility was officially inaugurated on April 25, 2008, and was awarded the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED Gold certification on February 5th, 2009. The building features day-lighting; recycled ergonomic furniture; exterior view from all work areas; low VOC construction materials; Earth Tubes" that condition some of the air underground for ventilation; ventilation controlled by CO 2 monitors; and automatic windows for ventilation Our speakers will include the architect who helped to design the green aspects of the building; the President of Aerzen USA, who will speak about the challenges of designing and operating a green manufacturing facility; and an employee from the facility, who will share his experience working in a green manufacturing facility.

Scott Kelly, AIA, LEED AP (ReVision Architecture) Scott is a principal at Re:Vision Architecture, an architecture and planning firm committed to re-visioning and restoring the balance between natural and built environments. Beginning his career with historic preservation and adaptive re-use projects, Scott became interested in the building elements and methods that cause buildings to endure. Scott also studied how buildings were designed to work with nature prior to mechanical heating and cooling. While Scott was an early adopter of the US Green Building Council s LEED benchmarking system, his work continues with several living and zero energy projects. Advocacy is an important part of Scott s work and he serves as co-chair of the Philadelphia AIA Committee on the Environment and is a founding Board Member of the Delaware Valley Green Building Council (DVGBC). Scott is currently teaching as part of Philadelphia University s new Master s of Science in Sustainable Design. In addition to leading the way with green architecture, Scott also consults to design firms, developers, building owners and manufacturers who are interested in green design charrettes, sustainable design and LEED certification. While Scott has worked on over 100 LEED projects around the nation, including several platinum level, his favorite projects are close to his native Philadelphia. The Big Picture: Principles, and Practice of Green Building and Sustainable Design Packing the most essential information for people interested in green building into one content-rich presentation, The Big Picture: Principles, and Practice of Green Building and Sustainable Design is the definitive presentation for theory, fundamental principles, and practical strategies. The presentation was developed by experienced practitioners who each contributed what they believe to be the most critical information needed to inspire and create and understanding about green and sustainable building and maintenance projects. The main segments of the presentation include: The Big Picture: Understanding the Importance of Green Building to Companies, Communities, and a Sustainable Future. Principles: The Integrated Design Process and Decision-Making Approach for Green Projects Practice: Strategies, Technologies, and Rating Systems for Green Projects. The location for the course is a living example of the principles and strategies discussed in the course and the facility will be used as a detailed case study. Participants are encouraged to bring their own questions and put the speaker to the test! Pierre Noack (Aerzen USA) Pierre Noack is originally from Belgium, in the French speaking Walloon part of the country. His parents operated a flour mill where he worked during many of his vacations. He graduated from ECAM in Brussels with a degree in mechanical and electrical engineering. His work at Aerzen started with his position as a sales engineer for Aerzener Maschinenfabrik GmbH in Aerzen, Germany, with numerous trips to Western Europe, India and Pakistan and is now president of Aerzen USA Corporation. Pierre will explain Aerzen USA s Triple Bottom Line Business Philosophy of: Financial; Social; and Environmental responsibilities and the Charrette Process of involving the stakeholders at the first stages of building planning. He will provide us with insight into design touchstones that guided the team through the planning, concept, design, construction and green operation of the building. Some of the hurdles encountered along the way as well as the lessons learned from the process will also be presented.

2010-2011 Local Section Elections The following Local Section members have volunteered to run for positions on the Executive Board of the Philadelphia Section AIHA for the 2010-2011 term: President-Elect (becomes President in 2011-2012): Larry Johnson (Sovereign Environmental Group) Secretary (2-year term): Tom Case (Case OS&H Consulting) Directors (2-year term): Ryan Graff (Merck) Steve Siegel (EMSL) Chris Wesley (Colden Corporation) Dues-paying members of the Local Section will receive an email in April with a link to on-line voting. Temple University s Industrial Hygiene Program The Industrial Hygiene program at Temple University is experiencing some major difficulties. Due to low enrollment, the MS in Environmental Health/concentration in industrial hygiene program is not admitting new students; the program is in suspense. For the first time in its 35 year history, the Environmental Health/Industrial Hygiene program has NO new students on the roster. Instead, it has been replaced with an Environmental Health MPH program, that no longer includes most of the traditional industrial hygiene courses similar to those that many Philadelphia Section AIHA members studied. Students can study environmental health, and are taking community health and public health classes, with limited or no IH classes. There is a serious risk of the permanent loss of this IH Program. Several Local Section members are looking into the possibility of meeting with the new department chair, Dr. Ian Greaves, to discuss alternatives and the possible resurrection the program. If any Local Section members are interested in getting involved with this effort, please send an email to TU@philaaiha.com.

The Philadelphia Section AIHA has started a LinkedIn group (American Industrial Hygiene Association, Philadelphia Local Section). LinkedIn is an interconnected network of experienced professionals from around the world, representing 170 industries and 200 countries. You can find, be introduced to, and collaborate with qualified professionals that you need to work with to accomplish your goals. The Philadelphia Section AIHA s LinkedIn group will be used to share information, facilitate networking, and to receive and post employment opportunities in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
