GREAT CASTLES & GARDENS OF DENMARK June 16-24, 2019 Sponsored by Berkshire Botanical Garden Tour arrangements by Classical Excursions P.O. Box 682 Tolland, CT 06084 www.classicalexcursions.com

Great Castles & Gardens of Denmark June 16-24, 2019 Sunday, June 16, 2019 Independent arrivals into Copenhagen. We assemble at the hotel for a welcome dinner at 6:30 pm. The Admiral Hotel, Toldbodgade 24, Copenhagen, Tel: +45 3374 14 14 Monday, June 17, 2019 A stroll through Copenhagen: The Botanical Garden which is currently being restored to its original grandeur from the 19 th century, followed by a visit to Kongens Have also in Copenhagen in a restaurant in Copenhagen. An afternoon tour of Frederiksborg Slot and Gardens on the outskirts of Copenhagen. The castle now houses the National Portrait Gallery, but it was originally built by King Christian IV and is the largest Renaissance castle in Scandinavia. The extensive Baroque Gardens built by Frederick IV in the 1720 are the highlight for us at Frederiksborg. Architect J.C. Krieger laid out the symmetrical gardens, which are aligned with the castles main axis, extending into the landscape. Though the garden has undergone alterations throughout the years, it was restored in the 1990s and is complete with the cascades and formal parterre flowerbeds. There is also a lovely English garden on the grounds of Frederikborg. Dinner on your own in Copenhagen Tuesday, June 18, 2019 A morning visit to the Queens residence, Fredensborg Slot where we will visit the Queen s private Royal Garden and Orangery, which are not generall open to the public. The formal garden has undergone an extensive and meticulous restoration. Experience the rarely seen dramatic allée with its 250-year-old lime trees and replicas of the original sculptures being prepared for installation. This is considered to be Denmark s grandest Royal Garden and is never open to the public. Special arrangements for this private viewing have been made for our group. A group lunch will be arranged at a local restaurant today. En route back to Copenhagen we will visit another private garden in Holte, belonging to a famous Danish landscape architect Ms. Jane Schuel. Dinner on your own tonight

Wednesday, June 19, 2019 This morning we will visit the renowned Liselund Manor house, located on the picturesque island of Møn. Built in the late 18 th to early 19 th century, Liselund is considered to have some of the most well-preserved, simple but elegant Danish Neo-classical interiors. Situated within a romantic landscape park along the Danish coast, lined with white chalk cliffs, it is one of the most dramatic settings you will see in all of Denmark. Liselund is only open for pre-arranged visits by appointment only. Also included is a visit to Møllebæksgård garden. An afternoon visit to Gisselfeld park and Orangery with the owners Stig and Greg who are also landscape architects. The park is over 40 hectars and is considered to be one of Denmark s finest examples of an English landscape garden. The park contains over 400 species of shrubs and trees. The park was frequented by Hans Christian Andersen and is said to be where the story Ugly Duckling was written. Dinner on your own tonight in Copenhagen Thursday, June 20, 2019 A day visiting the very beautiful Humlebæk and the Louisiana Modern Art Museum. We will have lunch on the stunning grounds of the museum or in Humlebæk. On route back to Copenhagen we will visit Peter Wibroe s private Baroque garden in Søllerød. Dinner on your own tonight

Friday, June 21, 2019 As we leave Copenhagen for Fyn we visit Ledreborg Slot, a large 18 th century private home and garden in the Rococo style. Built in 1742 and owned by the Moltke family the unity of the composition of this estate, house and garden, is something not to be missed. After lunch we visit the Geografisk Have in Kolding. This garden was started 100 years ago by the Danish gardener and nursery owner Aksel Olsen. He founded a plant school in 1917, releasing catalogues of seeds from many regions of the world all tested in Danish soil. This led to the inspiration for the botanical garden that he created in 1925. Gepgrafisk Have contains gardens from Asia, Europe, China, North America, South America and Siberia. There are also rose, dahlia and herb gardens along with green houses. Check into the Hindsgavl Slot Hotel. Group dinner at Hindsgavl Castle tonight. Saturday, June 22, 2019 This morning we visit Egeskov Slot and garden in nearby Kværndrup. The castle itself has its origins in 1554 but the first major garden was constructed in 1713. The inspiration for the garden was Fredensborg, Frederiksborg and Versailles. The maze was designed in 1730 and is still in place. There are also English gardens, a Renaissance and water garden, fushia, dahlia and herb gardens. CNN Traveler ranks Egeskov as the 12 th most spectacular garden in the world. An afternoon visit to Sanderumgård, dating from the 1790s, with the owner Suzanne Vind. The Vind family has owned and occupied the manor house since 1828. We will have a tour with refreshments. The garden is known to be one of the first romantic landscape gardens in Denmark and was established by Johan Bulow in 1793. The garden is 15 hectars and is tied together by a 2 kilometer long system of canals. Aside from creating the beautiful garden at Sanderumgaard, Johan Bulow was also the advisor to Crown Prince Frederik on the Fredriksberg Dinner on your own at Hindsgavl tonight.

Sunday, June 23, 2019 Today we will visit Glorup Gods and garden. This is a manor house and a romantic landscape garden, rebuilt to the designs of Niclas-Henri Jardin and his pupil Christian Josef Zuber in 1763. It was originally built as a summer residence for A.G. Molte it has passed through generations of family members to the current owner Jacob Rosenkrantz. Group lunch An afternoon visit to the private and rarely seen Hofmansgave, a large estate north of Odense and dating from 1774. The house was earlier used as an artists retreat, among others the noteworthy H.C. Andersen. The modest house and lovely English garden will be seen today. A farewell group dinner tonight to conclude the tour. Monday, June 24, 2019 The coach returns participants to Copenhagen in time for afternoon departures.
