Section 1 Introduction The FISHER Model 160 A Hi-Temp Bath operates from ambient temperature to 275 C, accepts water, oil, bath wax, sand or industrial salts. A factory-calibrated electronic temperature controller with its thermocouple closely located to the heating medium assures quick response and minimal overshoot. This system controls the 1200 Watt heater and maintains bath constancy within ±1 C. All components are housed in a rugged steel cabinet finished with baked acrylic enamel to provide long, troublefree service and easy maintenance. Heavy insulation minimizes heat loss. Featuring a large, cast-aluminum bowl with a capacity of 5000 ml, the Model 160A accommodates flat as well as traditionally round bottom vessels with volumes up to 4000 ml. A raised edge around the rim of the bowl protects the cabinet finish from spills and overflowing media. Also, there is a 1/2x27 threaded hole to mount an accessory support rod (not supplied) for suspending vessels and other sample containers. Unpacking The Model 160A Hi-Temp Bath is shipped in a single carton. Carefully unpack the unit and check each item against the following packing list. If any item is missing, notify your Fisher Scientific branch or representative. Note If damage is observed, keep the shipment intact, including the carton and all packing material, File a claim with the final carrier; usually the firm will send an investigator to ascertain liability. s Quantity..............................Item 1..................Hi-Temp Bath, 120V unit 1...........................Warranty Card 1.............................Instructions Fisher Scientific Hi-Temp Bath 1-1

Section 1 Introduction Controls and Indicators All controls are located on the front panel. POWER SWITCH: The power switch controls all power to the bath. In the ON position, (upper section depressed), power is being applied to the temperature controller. TEMPERATURE SET CONTROL: The temperature is set using a dial with a scale from 50 C to 275 C. POWER INDICATOR: Illuminates when power switch is turned on. HEAT INDICATOR: Illuminates when power is applied to the heaters. SAFETY SENTINEL: Illuminates when an over temperature condition exists. This controller will activate automatically and take over control of the bath within 7 C of the original set temperature. Operation The Model 160A Hi-Temp Baths are electronically controlled for operation between ambient temperature and 275 C. 1. Set the temperature dial fully counterclockwise. 2. Fill bowl with appropriate amount of medium in relation to size of sample container. 3. Plug line cord into appropriate power outlet. 4. Depress the upper portion of the power switch. The power indicator should come on. 5. Set the temperature dial to the desired temperature. The heat indicator should come on. The indicator will stay on until the temperature approaches the set temperature. Allow at least 30 minutes for the bath to stabilize when approaching the set temperature. 6. Position container with sample in bath medium. Rise time is about 70 minutes to 275 C in 1500 ml. of oil. Note Rise time will vary according to type and amount of medium. s Note After controlling at a given temperature, if the set temperature dial is rotated counterclockwise, the Safety Sentinel indicator will come on. This is normal operation. s Fisher Scientific Hi-Temp Bath 1-3

Section 1 Introduction Calibration Factory calibrated, the Hi-Temp bath requires no additional calibration unless closer correlation between TEMPERATURE control setting and actual bath temperature is desired, or if the electronic temperature control board has been changed. 1. Plug line cord into appropriate power outlet. 2. Suspend thermocouple or glass thermometer into center of medium. 3. Set the temperature control dial to 50 C. 4. Allow at least 30 minutes for the bath to stabilize. The temperature should read 50 C, ±5 C. For closer correlation, carefully remove the temperature set knob, taking care not to rotate shaft. 5. The temperature controller has a high and low temperature range adjustment control located under the skirt of the set temperature knob. Adjust the bottom potentiometer, clockwise to increase the temperature, or counterclockwise to decrease the temperature. Adjust in small steps while observing the temperature. When adjusting the control clockwise, the heat lamp should glow continuously, and then start to cycle. 6. After this calibration is complete, re-install the knob. Set the bath temperature to at least 150 C, or to a temperature where the bath will be used. Allow the bath to stabilize for at least 30 minutes. 7. Remove the knob. Repeat Step #5, but adjustment should now be made using the top potentiometer. Adjust in small steps while observing the temperature. 8. Re-install the temperature set knob. Calibration is now complete. 1-4 Hi-Temp Bath Fisher Scientific
