MEDICAL INNOVATIONS

About ECOPATENT ECOPATENT is an innovative disposal system for human waste in hospitals and nursing homes. In 2009 entrepreneur Gert Sommer purchased BOSK AG and now manufactures innovative cellulose containers in a state-of-the-art pulp processing facility in Germany. These containers are used in many different industries because of their simple disposal through the sewage system in combination with the ECOPATENT Macerator that defibers and liquefies containers. Focus of the present day operation are hospitals and nursing homes where singleuse containers help reduce the risk of infections while saving time and energy.

ECOPATENT The Bedpan The history of the bedpan (also bedpan liner, slipper pan, slipper bedpan) goes way back in history. In former times, lavatories were not placed inside the house, but outside of it. In order to avoid leaving the house during the night, a so-called chamber pot was used. Due to a lid, it was odorproof. At that time, bedpans were made of pottery and never got in touch with disinfection at all. Thereinafter, it found its way into hospitals and healthcare facilities, and so did urine bottles and kidney bowls. However, there still was no disinfection. Bedpans, urine bottles and kidney bowls were manually cleaned in a separate dirtywork area (also functional space) in a sink made of pottery. During the 1930s, the first cleaning device came into the market. It took a further 30 years for the first cleaning and disinfecting devices to come into the market. They are also known as bedpan washers. The devices cleaned bedpans with cold water and disinfection. The problem was that bacteria became resistant against the disinfection. The devices didn t work with heat, but only heat can kill bacteria, viruses and germs. The industry solved the problem by developing chemically working bedpan washers and later also thermally working ones. It works with superheated steam. Due to the use of such high temperatures, all germs are killed. At the moment, approx. 100,000 devices are installed in about 20,000 hospitals and nursing homes only in Germany. The technology continuously makes progress. By now, the German Robert Koch Institute (RKI) recommends bedpan washers to work with hot water having at least 90 C and to have the disinfection infiltrated for at least 5 minutes. Only then, all germs are gone. Unfortunately, the majority of devices installed in Germany don t comply with the requirements for cleaning and disinfection any more. Thus, the possibilities for dangerous germs and bacteria to spread and to cause infections increase. In the age of MRSA, Clostridium difficile and other germs, the risk in the field of waste management is extra high. Reusable bedpans, urine bottles and kidney bowls contribute to the spread of infections, especially in cases where the cleaning and disinfecting in bedpan washers wasn t sufficient. Therefore, the inventors of the ECOPATENT System decided to go a new way 10 years ago. The system consists of disposables like bedpans, urine bottles and kidney bowls made of pure cellulose which are to be disposed of through the sewage system with the help of the ECO- Finisher-Macerator: easy and hygienic. Thus, bacteria, viruses and germs are not able to spread any more.

ECOPATENT Concept Patients in need of care are oftentimes dependent on the use of containers like bedpans, bowls for toilet chairs, urine bottles and other nursing articles for their everyday personal hygiene. After every use these containers need to be cleaned and disinfected, which is an expensive procedure. Cost-intensive cleaning and disinfection equipment is used for this process which consumes water, electricity and chemicals and deprives of their nurse time. In addition, all cleaning and disinfection equipment has to be constantly validated and inspected at least every six months. Regular inspections still cannot completely exclude the risk of infections caused by technical defects between maintenance intervals. Furthermore, the degree of disinfection of the cleaning and disinfection equipment oftentimes is not sufficient to eliminate multi-resistant pathogens. ECOPATENT manufactures containers from environmentally-friendly cellulose that can be completely disposed of through sewage systems along with human waste. Unlike recycled newspaper containers that include materials prohibited by many sewage treatment plants, cellulose is truly 100 % biodegradable. Therefore, ECOPATENT developed an innovative processing technology for the production of absolutely leak-proof cellulose containers. The ECOPATENT Macerator completely defibers and liquefies the containers with the aid of cold water. A thin cellulose pulp paste remains which can be legally disposed of through the sewage system. With the help of the ECOPATENT System, hospitals and nursing homes can minimize the risk of infections and considerably lower their expenses by saving energy consumption and time. In addition, the ECOPATENT System is very environmentally-friendly because sewage pollution from chemicals used in traditional disinfection units can be completely eliminated.

ECOPATENT Raw Material Cellulose CELLULOSE A Renewable Raw Material Cellulose is the main component of vegetable cell walls and thus the most common organic compound on earth. In the raw material wood, cellulose together with lignin and other components are contained in the cell wall. Cellulose Pulp is produced by breaking down fibers which predominantly consist of cellulose. ECOPATENT containers are almost entirely made of cellulose pulp that is produced from shredded wood by using an alkaline sulfate process and is 100 % biodegradable.

ECOPATENT Advantages PURE WHITE and SKIN-FRIENDLY Disposables Patients respond favorably to the new pure white color of ECOPATENT bedpans and urine bottles, because it gives them a feeling of cleanliness, hygiene and safety. More importantly, ECOPATENT products are skin-friendly and soft opposed to disposables made from recyled newspaper that may scratch the private parts of patients and result in complaints about an itchy feeling. Therefore, ECOPATENT is the preferred choice of patients and hospital staff.

ECOPATENT Products Only ECOPATENT Cellulose Disposables are stable enough to hold the weight of a patient! Ordinary disposables require bedpan support frames that need disinfection after each use which results in additional work, unnecessary use of chemicals and risk of infection. Even heavy patients do not need a support frame when they use two ECOPATENT disposables stacked into one another. Bedpans Urine Bottles Bowls for Toilet Seats Kidney Bowls

Statement by Prof. Dr. med. Axel Kramer about the ECOPATENT System Prof. Dr. med. Axel Kramer The ECOPATENT System is a hygienic and safe way to dispose of human excrement, making the reprocessing of urine bottles, bedpans, sputum cups and kidney bowls unnecessary. In regard to ecological and economic aspects, this new way of disposing shows outstanding advantages over the disinfection with thermal disinfection equipment. How can these results be achieved? Chairman of the German Association for Hospital Hygiene and Specialist for Hygiene and Environmental Medicine at the University of Greifswald ECOPATENT containers for excrement (as well as other containers) are produced from cellulose. After use the containers are disposed of with the ECOPATENT Macerator. They are shredded into small pieces, mixed with water, defibered, liquefied and disposed of through the sewage system like toilet paper. Compared to the reprocessing of non-disposable containers in thermal disinfection equipment, disposal using the ECOPATENT System can save up to 2 /3 of water and disinfectants as well as up to 97 % of electricity. The bedpans are stable enough to hold the body weight of a patient, two bedpans can be stacked into one another for patients with higher weight. Urine bottles come with measuring tapes that allow nurses to check the volume. The lid of the ECOPATENT Macerator locks tightly so that no infectious aerosol can evaporate. Although sewage systems of hospitals show a surplus from the disposed cellulose, it is still below the average level of private home sewage systems. At the same time, the work routine of the nursing staff becomes more efficient because containers don t have to be returned for reprocessing. Furthermore, the validation and re-validation of the thermal disinfection equipment including inprocess checks every six months are unnecessary and result in additional economic and ecological advantages. In addition, convenience for patients can be improved. Stainless steel bedpans and other basins are usually either too cold or given a short cooling-down period too hot. Cellulose containers are available as needed and take on the temperature of the storage room. Conclusion: The hygienic safety of disposed waste through the ECOPATENT Macerator is not subject to any technical disturbance variables, which cannot be completely eliminated for performance of thermal disinfection equipment despite complex revalidation and in-process monitoring. Because of its ecological advantages, reduced operating expenses and a more efficient work routine, the ECOPATENT Macerator is the best way to dispose of human waste in hospitals as well as nursing homes while promoting the idea of sustainability for future generations.
