Soil Descriptions LESTER SERIES - Soil # 106E, 106C2, 106D2 The Lester series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in calcareous loamy glacial till on till plains and moraines. These soils have moderate permeability. Their slopes range from 2 to 70 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 28 inches. Mean annual temperature is about 47 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Lester loam with a convex slope of about 9 percent on a ground moraine in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils have convex slopes on moraines and till plains. Slope gradients range from 2 to 70 percent. They formed in calcareous, loamy glacial till of late Wisconsinan Age. Mean annual temperature ranges from 45 degrees to 52 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 25 to 33 inches. Frost free days range from 125 to 165. Elevations range from 700 to 1600 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These include the Cordova, Dundas, Glencoe, Hamel, Houghton, Klossner, Le Sueur, Muskego, and Nessel soils. Poorly drained Cordova and somewhat poorly and poorly drained Dundas soils are on flats and upper drainageways with a high seasonal water table. Very poorly drained Glencoe, Houghton, Klossner, and Muskego soils are mostly in depressions. Poorly drained Hamel soils are on foot and toe slopes. Moderately well drained Le Sueur and Nessel soils are on slightly elevated flats and gently convex slopes. HAMEL SERIES - Soil # 414 The Hamel series consists of very deep, poorly drained soils that formed in slope colluvium and glacial till on moraines. These soils have moderately slow permeability. Their slopes range from 0 to 4 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 28 inches. Mean annual temperature is about 47 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Hamel loam with a 2 percent concave slope on a glacial moraine in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Hamel soils have concave slopes in swales, rims of closed depressions, foot and toe slopes, and upper drainageways below sloping to very steep slopes. Slope gradients are 0 to 4 percent. Hamel soils formed in slope colluvium and glacial till of Late Wisconsinan Age. Mean annual temperature is about 45 to 48 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation is about 25 to 30 inches. Frost free days range from 125 to 165. Elevation above sea level ranges from 700 to 1600 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are principally the Hayden and Lester soils. These soils are well drained and are on the higher lying, gently sloping to very steep slopes. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained. Surface runoff is low or moderately low. Permeability is moderately slow. The apparent seasonal high water table is at.5 to 1.5 feet during November to June in most years. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Permeability is moderate. Runoff is moderate high or high
Soil Descriptions TERRIL SERIES - Soil # 1388B The Terril series consists of very deep, moderately well drained, moderately permeable soils formed in loamy local colluvium/alluvium on foot slopes, alluvial fans, and stream terraces of till plains. Slope ranges from 0 to 25 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 49 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation is about 30 inches. TYPICAL PEDON: Terril loam on a foot slope of about 4 percent in a cropped field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Terril soils are on nearly plane to slightly concave foot slopes, toeslopes, alluvial fans and swales, typically elongate in shape. Slope gradients are mostly between 1 and 9 percent, but some are as much as 25 percent. The soils formed in loamy local colluvium/alluvium derived from glacial till of mixed mineralogy. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 45 to 52 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation is 23 to 34 inches. Annual frost free days are 145 to 180 days. Elevation ranges from 1050 to 1450 feet above mean sea level. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: Associated soils on till plain upland areas are commonly the Clarion, Kenyon, Lester, Ostrander, Storden and Ves series. The Colo and Delft soils are the common associate on lower slopes. Others are the Biscay, Cylinder, Lawler, Marshan, Wadena, and Zook soils. Biscay, Cylinder, Lawler, Marshan, and Wadena soils have coarse textures in the lower part of the series control section. Colo, Delft and Zook soils are poorly drained. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well drained. Surface runoff is medium. Permeability is moderate. Soil saturation is recognized at depths of 3.5 to 6 feet during March to June in most years in the moderately wet phase. COLO SERIES - Soil # 1831 The Colo series consists of very deep, poorly drained, moderately permeable soils formed in alluvium on flood plains and concave foot slopes on uplands. Slope ranges from 0 to 5 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 47 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is about 34 inches. TYPICAL PEDON: Colo silty clay loam with a slope of less than 1 percent - cultivated. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Colo soils are on nearly level to very gently sloping flood plains, low stream terraces, and gently sloping alluvial fans. They also are in the lower parts of gently sloping upland drainageways near the water course. Slope ranges from 0 to 5 percent. Colo soils formed in noncalcareous silty sediments containing less than 15 percent sand most of which is very fine in size. Mean annual air temperature ranges from about 47 to 53 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation ranges from about 24 to 37 inches. Annual frost free days range from 145 to 185. Elevation ranges from 500 to 1400 feet above mean sea level. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: On flood plains and alluvial fans are the competing Kennebec, Wabash, and Zook soils and the Ackmore and Nodaway soils. Typically, the Kennebec and Nodaway soils are on slightly lower elevations than Colo soils; and the Wabash and Zook soils are on lower elevations. Ackmore soils are on similar landscape positions as the Colo soils. They are stratified in the upper part and are underlain by a buried A horizon. Nodaway soils are lighter colored, less clayey, and are finely stratified. In upland drainageways, the Ely, Judson, Olmitz, and Spillville, soils are common associates upslope from the Colo soils. The Ely soils have a dark grayish brown B horizon at about 30 inches, and they are somewhat poorly drained. Both Judson and Olmitz soils have chroma of 3 at depths of about 30 inches, and the Olmitz and Spillville soils contain 20 to 40 percent sand throughout the sola.
Soil Descriptions DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Colo soils are poorly drained. Depth to the seasonal high water table is 0 to 1 foot during the growing season. The drainage class is difficult to assess because of the thick mollic epipedon and depth to a gleyed C horizon. Surface runoff is slow. Permeability is moderate. The soils are rarely to commonly flooded. ANGUS SERIES - Soil # 1362B The Angus series consists of very deep, well drained soils formed in calcareous loamy glacial till on moraines and till plains. Permeability is moderate. Slopes range from 2 to 5 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 28 inches. Mean annual air temperature is about 46 degrees F. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These includes the Cordova, Dundas, Glencoe, Hamel, Houghton, Klossner, and Le Sueur soils which formed in similar parent materials. Poorly drained Cordova and Dundas soils are on flats and upper drainageways. Very poorly drained Glencoe soils are in depressions and drainage channels. Poorly drained Hamel soils are on footslopes or toeslopes. Very poorly drained Houghton and Klossner soils are organic and are in depressions. Moderately well drained Le Sueur soils are on slightly elevated flats and less sloping area. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Permeability is moderate. Runoff is moderately low. A seasonal high apparent water table is at 3.5 to 6 feet during March to June in most years. TYPICAL PEDON: Angus loam with a convex slope of about 5 percent on a ground moraine in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils have convex slopes on moraines or till plains. Slopes range from 2 to 5 percent. They formed in calcareous, loamy glacial till of late Wisconsin Age. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 45 to 50 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 25 to 32 inches. Frost-free days range from 125 to 165. Elevation above sea level ranges from 700 to 1600 feet.
