APPLIANCE BUYING GUIDE APPLIANCE BUYING TIPS +

THE TRAIL TEST DRIVE When you re looking for a new car, you probably want to take it out for a test drive to see how it operates before you buy it. Why settle for anything less when it comes to buying your appliances? The Trail Test Drive Normally when you shop for appliances, you can probably see them and touch them but from there, you have to imagine how they d actually work in your home. But at Trail Appliances, we have a great selection of live appliances you can see, touch and test in-store. Come take the Trail Test Drive. Touch the controls, explore the settings and hear the appliance working, just like it would in your home. With over 50 brands to choose from, we have something for every budget and lifestyle. At Trail Appliances, we believe value is more than just price. Our Product Experts are here to help you choose the right appliances for your budget and lifestyle. Things to Consider... Draw a diagram of your home with measurements of your doorways and space for your appliances to make your shopping experience efficient and stress free: - Confirm where venting and connections are required and include the space required in your measurements. - Confirm the drain hose is within reach of where your new washer will live. - Measure the height and depth, plus the width between the cabinets and the countertops as this may be different. Measure the space you have available to house your new appliances. You might find you have the space for something bigger and better than your current appliances! Don t forget the technical details! Determine your kitchen ventilation capabilities: a fridge with an ice maker or water dispenser will need a water line to be hooked up; your potential dryer or induction range might need a 220V grounded connection instead of the standard 110V that runs through most homes. Walk the delivery path and determine any potential hazards so the delivery team can be prepared. It will be less stressful for everyone! 1 2 BUYING TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND

LAUNDRY BUYING TIPS Laundry that Fits Your Lifestyle Laundry is a critical part of a functioning household. These are some of the longest-lasting appliances in your home. The right washer and dryer can help you save money, reduce energy consumption and extend the life of your clothing. Things to Keep in Mind A few things to consider to ensure the laundry pair you choose will fit your space: Measure your current space to ensure your new laundry pair will fit. Allow 4-6 behind the machines for venting and connections. Confirm where venting is required. Confirm the drain hose is within reach of the washer. Ensure you can provide a clear path to the laundry space for delivery. Ask a Product Expert for a copy of our laundry checklist to ensure seamless delivery and installation. Capacity is Key for Efficiency Depth with door open Will Your New Laundry Fit in Your Space? Width Depth Height Types of Washers Top Load Washers use an agitator that extends up through the middle of the wash basket. The agitator moves your clothes around, while the wash basket spins to clean clothes and extract water. High Efficiency Top Load Washers are more energy efficient and use less water than traditional Top Loaders. Instead of an agitator, an impeller creates turbulent currents to move the clothes through the water, cleaning your clothes with minimal force to preserve them longer. Front Load Washers are known for energy efficiency and because they use only a third of the water a Top Loader uses. Front Load washers don t have an agitator taking up room so may allow for larger loads. LAUNDRY BUYING TIPS 3 Washing machines are most energy-efficient when fully loaded. A 1-2 person household is likely fine with a compact pair. A larger family that runs multiple loads of laundry each week should consider a laundry pair with a larger capacity. Although the price tag may be higher on large-capacity models, you can save yourself a lot of time by running fewer loads of laundry each week. Be sure to compare laundry using the same rating measurement: some manufacturers measure capacity in I.E.C (a European method of rating), while others use Department of Energy ratings (D.O.E ). For example, a washer with a 5.0 cu. ft. I.E.C capacity, would equal approximately 4.3 cu. ft. D.O.E. Laundry pairs can often be stacked vertically to save space. There are compact stackable laundry pairs available, as well as large capacity stacking pairs. This will save you space yet allow you to have the laundry capacity your family needs. Dryer Features to Consider Today s dryers feature advanced technology to get your clothes looking their best. Sensor Dry determines how much moisture is left in your laundry and adjusts the drying time as necessary. The Steam option on a dryer can help you refresh your clothes by removing odours and reducing wrinkles. The Sanitizing Cycle uses high heat or steam to sanitize hard-to-clean items. And if your household has members who suffer from seasonal allergies, sanitizing bedding and clothing will help remove the pollen and dander that has been tracked into your home. 4

Top Load Laundry Pairs These top load laundry pairs will fulfill your household s laundry needs. Please be aware these pairs cannot be stacked vertically. Front Load Laundry Pairs Many front load laundry pairs can be installed stacked or side by side. Please be aware you will also need a stacking kit if you want to stack your washer and dryer. DISHWASHER BUYING TIPS What Should I Know About Dishwashers? When you are looking for a new dishwasher, you may want to bring in a few plates and bowls to test in different models to make sure the dishwasher you choose will work with your current dinnerware. Some dishwashers have flexible tines or adjustable upper racks that allow you to make adjustments, while others have fixed racking that doesn t allow much flexibility. Things to Consider An ENERGY STAR dishwasher will save money and energy. Today s dishwashers have become much more efficient to operate, but cycles have become longer. Some dishwashers have low water features or quick wash options, which are handy if you re on metered water use. Or, if your electricity usage is calculated on time-of-use rates, you can choose a dishwasher with a delay start option: you can set the dishwasher to wash later when energy is cheaper. The wash cycles you need depends on your lifestyle. Light, Regular, Pots & Pans and Economy settings are available on most dishwashers and probably the ones used most often. Quick Wash uses less time than Regular Wash, if you are in a rush or only have lightly soiled dishes. Sanitize Wash provides high heat to help eliminate 99.9% of bacteria while enhance your drying results. Enhanced cycles such as Glass, Stemware or Rinse take care of delicate items. Some dishwashers have a stainless steel interior, which is more durable, hygienic and stain resistant than plastic. They also retain heat better than their plastic counterparts, making them more energy efficient as well. Dishwashers Are you unsure about the benefits of adjustable racks and tines, cutlery trays, half-washes or enhanced cycles? Ask a Product Expert how these features make dishwashing more convenient. REFRIGERATOR BUYING TIPS How to Choose a Refrigerator There are many refrigerator styles to choose from. The right style for you will depend on how you use your fridge. Top Freezer Refrigerators are the most cost-effective models in the market, and they re great for people who frequently use the freezer compartment. If you spend a lot of time hunting in your fresh food compartment, however, consider a Bottom Freezer Refrigerator. French Door Refrigerators are a subset of bottom freezer fridges: their refrigerator door is split in two, so you won t let out as much cold air when you re just grabbing something quickly. Check Your Space Before you buy a refrigerator, measure the space you have to house it not the size of your old refrigerator. Measure the delivery path for your new refrigerator, taking into account factors such as doorways, stair corners, islands and fixed walls. For a full list of considerations, ask a Trail Representative for a copy of our Measuring Checklist for Refrigerators. If the refrigerator you are choosing has an ice maker or water dispenser, you will need a water line to connect to the fridge. A Trail Representative can coordinate the hook-up of the water line with a recommended installer. Width Depth Depth including handles Height to top of cabinet Height including hinge cap Will Your New Refrigerator Fit in Your Space? Refrigerators The first step in choosing a new refrigerator is determining how much space you have for it. Once you know that, you can consider features such as size, capacity, shelves and special features. ELECTRIC RANGE BUYING TIPS Choosing a Range That s Right for You When purchasing a range an appliance with both a cooktop and an oven there are many options to consider. Electric range cooktops have coil burners or smooth-top surfaces. Coil burners are durable and less expensive, but the cooking surface doesn t provide optimal temperature control. Smooth cooktops Ceran-top or Induction have burners hidden beneath a ceramic surface. This makes them easier to clean and offers more cooking flexibility because the elements come in various sizes and power levels. The oven is also an important element to think about when buying a range. For an avid cook, a double-oven range or a range with a warming drawer may be the right fit; however, if your meals are quick and simple, a model with fewer features might be more convenient. If you like to bake, consider a range with convection options. Types of Ranges When choosing a range, you have a choice in the look and functionality of your product: Freestanding ranges have finished sides and a backsplash where the controls are located. Because of the finished sides, you can place it anywhere you want. Slide-in ranges have unfinished sides since they are designed to fit between cabinets. There is no backsplash and the controls are on the front of the range. Before choosing a gas range, ensure you can meet installation requirements and have a gas line available. Once you have ordered your natural gas range, be sure your range is installed by a qualified installer or service technician. What s the Difference Between Gas and Dual-Fuel? The difference between a gas and dual-fuel range is the oven. A gas range has both a gas cooktop and a gas oven, whereas a dual fuel range has a gas cooktop and an electric oven. Although the cost of a dual fuel range is generally higher than an all-gas range, it provides you with the best characteristics from both gas and electric ranges: the temperature control and high-heat capabilities of a gas cooktop combined with the consistent heat of an electric oven. GAS RANGE BUYING TIPS Splitting the cooktop and oven is an option if you are building or renovating a kitchen. A cooktop is built into your counter, while the oven (known as a wall oven) is built separately into a wall or cabinet. 11 12

Electric Ranges: Ceran-Top and Induction Ceran-top cooktops have metal coils like a traditional coil-top range for their burners, but the coils are hidden under a ceramic surface. Induction ranges also have burners underneath the surface, but they use electromagnetic technology which makes them a much more efficient option. Gas and Dual-Fuel Ranges Manufacturers use BTUs, or British Thermal Units, to rate the amount of heat gas burners provide on their highest setting. If you do a lot of high-heat cooking or wok-style cooking, you will want to look for a range with one or more power burners (approximately 15,000 BTUs or more). For cooking soups or delicate sauces, a range with a simmer burner can provide you with a low, gradual heat. VENTILATION BUYING TIPS Why Do I Need a Range Hood? Did you know the kitchen is the main source of pollution inside your home? Cooking creates unhealthy heat, odours, gases, grease, steam and smoke. A kitchen range hood is a fan with an enclosure designed to capture and vent these unwanted pollutants. The range hood s internal fan effectively captures the rising column of air directly over the cooking surface and sends the contaminants outside the home. Different range hoods perform this function in different ways and with varying levels of efficiency. Most kitchen range hoods are located directly over the cooking surface. Alternatives include downdraft kitchen exhaust units and range hoods with remote-mounted fans such as an inline, wall or ceiling mounted fan. Things to Consider How well a range hood performs depends on its airflow (measured in CFM - cubic feet of drawn air per minute), sound, power and ducting. Adequate ducting is essential to properly dispel the contaminants out of the house. To minimize sound associated with your range hood, purchase one with a low sone rating and ensure the ductwork serving the range hood is properly sized. Range Hoods Ventilation is an integral part of any kitchen. Proper ventilation provides a cleaner, healthier and more enjoyable cooking environment by removing moisture, odour and unhealthy by-products of combustion. (Also available in 36 ) Although there are many factors in how well range hoods will help keep your home clean, a noted rule of thumb is that for every 10,000 BTU of cooking power, 100 CFM of ventilation is required. Actual performance varies greatly among range hood models and manufacturers, so check with a Product Expert to find out which type of range hood is right for your home.
