South Bay Orchid Society, Inc. Orchids for Amateurs Founded July, 1957 The INFLORESCENCE November 2009 www.southbayorchidsociety.com Our November 20, 2009 Guest Speaker is Doug Overstreet Vandaceous Orchids for Southern California DOUG OVERSTREET was born and raised in Southeastern New Mexico and currently resides in Sherman Oaks, California. The son of a floral designer and descendant on both sides from a long line of farmers, Mr. Overstreet comes by his interest in orchids naturally. He began growing orchids at the age of twelve and has been avidly involved in the hobby ever since. He currently maintains a mixed collection of approximately 1,000 plants. A frequent and much in demand lecturer on orchids and related topics, Doug has spoken for orchid societies, botanical gardens, including the prestigious Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens, and orchid nurseries throughout the Western United States. Mr. Overstreet is noted for his ability to present the complex world of orchids clearly, concisely and in a manner suitable for the advanced enthusiast and yet easily understandable by the absolute beginner. In the summer and fall 1998, he finished the production of the first in a series of videotapes on orchids and their culture. The video, "Anyone Can Grow Orchids...Even You" made its debut at the East West Orchid Show in October of 1998 and received wide acclaim. Doug has written a yearlong series of articles on Integrated Pest Management for the Orchid House for The Orchid Digest magazine, he also serves on the Publications Committee for The Orchid Digest as Assistant Editor. Mr. Overstreet is a Past President of The Southland Orchid Show Committee, sponsors and organizers of The Southland Orchid Show at The Huntington and is also a Past Ribbon Judging Chairperson of the Orchid Society of Southern California. Doug is a Fully Accredited Judge in the American Orchid Society judging system, Pacific South Region. The topic of this month s talk is: Vandaceous Orchids for Southern California. Many people think Vandaceous Orchids aren t suitable for Southern California. In fact, there are a number of Vandas and their relatives that thrive in the region. Several genera are presented and discussed in this presentation. Orchid Care Session 7:00pm Culture Session: This month s culture session, the culture of Vandaceous Orchids, will be presented by Doug Overstreet. This month s raffle table will be provided by Andy s Orchids. Don t forget to buy your raffle tickets, Andy s plants are of exceptional quality!! President s Message Tempus Fugit (Time Flees also known as Time Flies) as Virgil, the Poet would say in Rome about 40 B.C. With the completion of our Orchid Show at the South Coast Botanic Garden and our Golden Age of Orchids display at The Huntington Library, which hosted the AOS trustees meeting this year, we will be looking forward to our Christmas Party. First, though, I thank all who made both our show and our display so pleasant and successful. Gratitude also goes to Polly Kissinger for her extended service as our monthly Ribbon Judging Committee Chairperson. She tendered her resignation and we are fortunate to have Saul Miller volunteer for this important position. Saul will continue also as our society Secretary. Thanks, Saul for volunteering your services for this significant meeting attraction. I assured Saul that I would publicize our need for helpers; he will also train and advise everyone who is interested in working on his committee. When you come to our meeting this month, pick up your Membership Directory for 2009-2010. Eeva has accomplished wonders with updating memberships, other Society addresses, and vendor listings. If you are a new member, I encourage you to read our Membership Information, Society By- Laws, and our Officer and Chairperson position descriptions. Even older members (like me) will enjoy revisiting all of the information available. How would you judge this display? (It was awarded the Best Display in our Fall Show.) Get involved! Contrary to belief, judging is not difficult. If you are interested in learning, call Saul at 310-558-1545. He is waiting to hear from you. Tom Renger November 2009 South Bay Orchid Society Page 2

I want to personally thank those who helped to make the South Bay Orchid Society's display at the AOS Golden Age of Orchids Show one of our best ever. Marla Corey went well beyond the call of duty and worked very late helping me putting the display in and taking it out. Don Smith went the extra mile to take the display and background plants to the show from the Rengers and back to Dr Miller, who lent us the background plants. My gratitude goes to Long Ngo for helping to take the display down and transporting all the plants back to the De Youngs drop off point. Special thanks to the Streeters, De Youngs, Larssons, Marla Corey, Nick Braemer, Bobby Davison, Susan Amini, and many others who made our display by lending us their plants. Fall Orchid Show and Sale Review What a great Fall Show we had! The weather was great, the orchids were beautiful, and the show was well attended. Everything ran smoothly, thanks to the hard work of our committee chairs and everyone who came to help. information about our show through the internet. Art, also, was helpful in keeping the raffle running smoothly and announcing the hourly winners. Marilyn Hill and Sue Estes recruited and organized the hosts and hostesses. They did a good job of keeping an eye on the showroom and answering questions the public might have about our plants and our society. Ron Henry organized the set up of the show, which involved bringing all of our show supplies from storage, putting up shade cloth and installing additional lighting in the auditorium. He and his helpers also had the responsibility of putting everything back into storage. Joann Green and June Brooks kept the kitchen organized. Everyone was well fed and ready to work. I m sure we have the best food of any of the orchid shows. Bob Streeter organized the ribbon judging and recruited excellent judges. Sharon Gage, Susan Amini and Ann Rogers efficiently registered all the plants for judging. Eeva Renger was at the Membership and Information table to welcome our guests, answer questions about our meeting, and to sign up new members. As a result of Eeva s hard work at the show, we have 11 new memberships! Don Goss, our publicity chairman, brought in large crowds with his publicity campaign. He designed the posters and put ads in local newspapers. Thanks to Don, also, for helping Nick with the Orchids R Easy talks. Art Hazboun kept the website up to date with details about our show. Many of our guests found Nick Braemer did an excellent job of organizing the speakers for our Orchids R Easy classes. All of the speakers deserve thanks for preparing and giving talks on orchid culture. I m sure that their knowledge and enthusiasm gave many novice growers the confidence to grow orchids and the more experienced to try new growing techniques. These classes have become a popular part of our shows. And of course a big thank you to everyone who took the time to volunteer to work at the show and bring food. I also want to thank everyone who brought their blooming orchids for judging in our show. There were not as many orchids in bloom the weekend of the show so every plant was even more appreciated. Congratulations to all the winners! The Fall Show is over and planning for the Spring Show has already begun. Mark your calendar for March 6 th and 7 th at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center.
