To guarantee the best acoustic reproduction we recommend the use of a flat gain amplifier of at least 30 watts. The sensitivity of Rainbow loudspeakers makes an enormous volume of sound possible, even with lowest input power. 6

Special adaptations to various cars, as well as the use of selected parts in the crossovers are details of our component systems. Thermal protection in the tweeters and a -3dB level adjustment in the tweeters are as important as the fundamental 12 db / 18 db slope of each system. The Professional Systems CS 330 P and CS 360 P are provided with 2 LCR crossovers. One crossover is used for midrange and input, the other for woofer and tweeter. This configuration was developed with regard to installation matters and perfect sound. Thanks to these separated crossovers, the components of the corresponding systems can be placed closer to each other. So the danger of a manipulation by magnetic interference of the powerful woofer and midrange is eliminated. To give your car a "factory look" you can paint the loudspeaker grilles and mounting rings in any colour. Placement of the Speakers In a car there are many locations to install Rainbow loudspeakers. However you should pay attention to the following facts: Woofers need a large volume for the acoustic reproduction. A rear package shelf with a large boot or doors with a large insulating air cushion are ideal. Since we provide our tweeters with different mounting rings and adapters there are various locations to place them. To find the best placement for the perfect acoustic reproduction of the tweeters you should act as follows: After installation and mounting the midranges and woofers connect the tweeters with long cables to the crossover that is provided. The cables should allow a free check of the placement. Start the system and insert a disc. Choose a volume at which the sound volume of the tweeter and the woofer are equal. Change the placement of the tweeters until you like the sound. Front-staging is only possible if the tweeters are arranged close to the woofers. It takes time to find the placement and you have to try different pieces of music. You can change the polarity of the tweeters (change positive and negative pole on the terminals) and pay attention to acoustic patterns and front-staging. Attention: The rear window and the windshield reflect very much and might lead to a shrill and piercing acoustic pattern. So avoid an installation near them. Fabrics absorb treble. Keep enough distance to headrests, upholstered back rests and seats. For acoustic reasons tweeter and woofer should be arranged as close together as possible. If the distance is too large an acoustic hole is the result which leads to distortion. Caution: Please check the suitability of the installation places before you begin. Do not cut any of the car's structural frame. Pay attention to the mechanism of the windows and door handles if you install the systems in the door panels. If you have the experience with electrical and mechanical procedures it is no problem to install Rainbow loudspeakers on your own. You have to make a compromise between the optimal acoustic reproduction and mechanical possibilities. In-Door Installation: Install the tweeter shoulder-high as far as possible to the front. The acoustic reproduction can be improved by the usage of an angle mount cup (approx. 20 ) but only if the right tweeter radiates the left door / seat and vice versa. Install the midrange between the tweeter and the woofer. A place near the tweeter would be perfect. Install the woofer in the kick panel of the door. The distance tweeter - midrange - woofer should be as little as possible. Dam the door around the installation place of the woofer to avoid acoustic short circuits. Should the door 7

covering vibrate it must be reinforceed with a plate. To suppress resonance use insulating material with the doors. These attenuation procedures are absolutely necessary to achieve an optimal kick bass. Rear package shelf Installation: Position the woofer very close to the windows. This prevents the typical indoor resonance step-up. Place the tweeter as close to the woofer as possible. Keep distance to the rear window and headrests as the rear window reflects and increases the reproduction of trebles (shrill + piercing) and headrests attenuate it too much. The usage of an angle mount construction is also advantageous when installed into the rear package shelf. Because of the sloping position more direct radiation is reflected by the windshield and reaches the listener. So the reproduction is more powerful. Before you cut out connect the tweeter with the system and test it at medium volume to find out the placement. Afterwards you can cut out and install the tweeter. Seal and reinforce rear. Picture 1: Placement of the speakers. Installation and Mounting Woofer CS 210 P3 / CS 230 P3 / CS 265 P3 / CS 330 P3 / CS 365 P3 Caution! Do not touch the dome. Put the magnet cup (N) on the installation place and center. Mark and scribe the drilling hole 5,3 mm and the cable holes. Drill the pilot holes for the screws and cables with a small drill. (Be careful with carpets as they are easily damaged!) Enlarge the drilling hole to 5,3 mm and finish the cable holes. Insert the tweeter (J) into the magnet cup (N) and pull the cables through the existing holes. Stick the threaded bolt (Q) with its M4 side through the magnet cup (N) and screw up with the tweeter (J). (There is a drilling device for the threaded bolt in the magnet bottom of the tweeter). Adjust the tweeter (J) and cables. Tighten the threaded bolt (Q) softly with a wrench (diameter 7 mm). Caution! Do not tighten too firmly! Attach the washer M5 (U) from behind to the threaded bolt and fasten it with the hexagon nut M5 (V). Should the length of the threaded bolt (Q) disturb the installation you can shorten it on the M5 side. Connect the tweeter according to the planned mode of operation active / passive with amplifier or crossover and adjust the level (Page 16 and 18). Picture 6: Magnet Cup for CAL 25. Surface-Mount Installation with Angle Mount Cup Places of installation: Mirror corner, dashboard and rear package shelf 13

Put the angle mount cup (O) on the installation place, scribe and finish the cable holes and mark the drilling holes for the screws. Drill holes 3,5 mm for the angle mount cup screws and 8 mm for the Tweeter screws. Fasten the angle mount cup (O) with the provided screw 3,9 x 13 (R). Insert the tweeter (J) into the angle mount cup (O) and pull the cables through the appropriate holes. Adjust the tweeter (J) to the cable holes in the angle mount cup (O). Press together and screw down carefully only with the screw M4 x 6 (P) and the washer M4 (T). Caution! Do not tighten too firmly! Connect the tweeter according to the planned mode of operation active / passive with amplifier or crossover and adjust the level (Page 16 and 18). Picture 7: Angle Mount Cup for CAL 25. Preparation of the Cables 14

Cut OFC cables 1 mm² for tweeters to the length needed and skin the terminals. Slide the red covering of the spade connector over the wire with the red marking (+) and the black one ( ) over the plain wire. Solder up spade connector and wire. Cut OFC cable 2,5 mm² for woofer and input with the red marking to the lengths needed for woofer and input. Skin the terminals on both ends and slide the red covering of the spade connector over the wire with the red marking (+) and the black one ( ) over the plain wire. Solder up spade connector and wire. The Crossover All component systems have a thermal protection. This additional precaution protects the dome tweeter from too much power. If the allowed level is exceeded the dome tweeters reduce their sound pressure reproduction. When operated again within the allowed nominal power range the thermal protection will take the tweeters back to their normal volume a few minutes later. Optional available: Spade connector-set including the mounting screws for the crossover(s). Rainbow art.-no. 151217 (2-way), 151216 (3-way). Mounting of the Crossover Install the crossover (X and Y) in an easily accessible and ventilated place. You can use screws 3,9 x 13 DIN 7981 (Z) plus washers. Caution! Do not install the crossover with flat head bolts, the mounting parts could be damaged. Large distances to harnesses avoid short circuits. In case of short circuits you must change the placement of the crossover. Connection of the Crossovers CS 210 P3 / CS 230 P3 / CS 265 P3 15

The crossover (X) and the loudspeakers (B) have screw-in terminals and polarity markings. So their correct connection is guaranteed. The numbers 1 to 7 are shown in the bottom of the crossover. Please tighten the screws of the crossover terminals firmly! Connection Input: Connect OFC cable 2,5 mm² with the crossover input (6 and 7) as shown. Connect the other end with the amplifier. Use the marked wire for the positive terminals and the plain wire for the negative ones. Connection Woofer Connect OFC cable 2,5 mm² with the crossover woofer (1 and 2) as shown. Connect the other end with woofer connection, same polarity. Connection Tweeter Connect cable 1 mm² for tweeter with the crossover tweeter (3 or 4 and 5). Connect the other end with the cable terminals 4,8 / 2,8 of the tweeter. Our component systems provide the possibility to correct the sound pressure's intensity (low / high) of the tweeters. So a three-dimensional and pleasant acoustic pattern can be reached no matter where the dome tweeters are installed. This correction is made by changing the wire from crossover + (4) to 3dB (3). So a -3dB reduction is possible. Position high (4) full tweeter level: Recommended if the tweeter is installed outside direct radiation range, i.e. in the lower part of the door, in the rear package shelf near the headrests or at the bottom of the kick space. Also if an extensive upholstering in the car interior leads to an absorption of high frequencies. Position low (3) level reduction -3dB: Recommended if the tweeter is installed in direct radiation range or in ear level, i.e. if installed near the dashboard with a high window reflection or in the rear package shelf near the rear window. Changing the polarity and possibly strengthening of the sound pressure. If you place the tweeter and the woofer very close to each other the polarity of the tweeter should be as indicated on the crossover (4 +, 5 ). If you have to install the tweeter and the woofer far apart because of spatial conditions we recommend changing the polarity by 180. Disconnect the tweeter from crossover + (3 or 4) and connect it to (5). Disconnect the the other tweeter wire from crossover (5) and connect it to + (3 or 4). In doing so you get a harmonic acoustic pattern. Picture 8: Connection Crossover (2-way system). 16

The crossovers for the tweeter/woofer (X) and the midrange (Y), also the loudspeakers (B+E) have screw-in terminals and polarity markings. So their correct connection is guaranteed. The numbers 1 to 7 are shown in the bottom of the crossover. Please tighten the screws of the crossover terminals firmly. Connection Input: Connect OFC cable 2,5 mm² with the midrange crossover (Y) input amp. (6 and 7) as shown. Connect the other end with the amplifier. Use the marked wire for the positive terminals and the plain wire for the negative ones. Connection Tweeter/Woofer crossover Connect OFC cable 2,5 mm² with the midrange crossover (Y) output cross (1 and 2) and connect the other end with the tweeter/woofer crossover (X) input (6 and 7) as shown. Use the marked wire for the positive terminals and the plain wire for the negative ones. Connection Woofer Connect OFC cable 2,5 mm² with the tweeter/woofer crossover (X) woofer (1 and 2) as shown. Connect the other end with woofer connection, same polarity. Connection Midrange Connect OFC cable 2,5 mm² with the midrange crossover (Y) midrange (3 or 4 and 5) as shown. Connect the other end with midrange connection, same polarity. Our midrange gives you the possibility to correct the sound pressure's intensity (low / high) in the midrange. So a three-dimensional and pleasant acoustic pattern can be reached no matter where the midranges are installed. This correction is made by changing the wire from midrange crossover (Y) + (4) to 3dB (3). So a -3dB reduction is possible. Connection Tweeter Connect OFC cable 1 mm² for tweeter with the tweeter/woofer crossover (X) tweeter (3 or 4 and 5). This correction is made by changing the wire from crossover (X) + (4) to 3dB (3). Picture 9: Connection Crossovers (3-way system). 18

OFC Caution! Important Operation Instructions Read carefully before you start installation! 19

Operate the loudspeakers only with the provided crossover which is designed for the system. Do not exceed the indicated maximum operational power. Do not mix up the connection woofer / tweeter! The tweeter dome would be rendered inoperable. Do not operate this system with an active crossover. The loudspeakers would be damaged, as the tweeter domes are not designed for the active operation without passive crossover! Don't use additional loudspeakers and don't change the woofers for larger ones. That would reproduce a nonlinear range. The crossover, tweeter and woofer would be overpowered. Do not open the crossover to change parts or function (e.g. modification to bi-amping). If opened all guarantee claims expire. For safety reasons you should use only the provided screws. Rainbow is not liable if you use other ways of mounting or other hardware. Make sure that the same polarity in loudspeakers, crossover and amplifier is correct. If speakers are wired out of phase, an unnatural sound without bass is the result....to avoid fire and accidents. Safety regulations for Users... You can install our car hifi components only if you are experienced with mechanical and electrical procedures.
