Ripls Versatile multifaceted design
Multidimensional lighting Ripls is a wall-mounted and ceiling lamp created for spaces where people are in motion. Our ambition has been to develop a lamp that creates a multidimensional effect when you move past it. At first glance, it is the epitome of discretion with its minimalist design. However, as you walk past the lamp, the light changes character. In this way, the fixture supports the function of the room. Ripls is the perfect lighting solution in corridors, on stairways, in reception areas and anywhere else where people move about. It makes Ripls the ideal choice for offices, hotels, educational institutions, hospitals and other large buildings with a high level of activity.
Ripls
Design to Shape Light At Louis Poulsen we shape light. We strive to create an atmosphere where you feel comfortable. We shape our products because of the illumination each shape creates. Every single surface and curve exists to create precisely the right atmosphere in the room. Form follows function. With Ripls, the desire was to create a lamp which was discreet yet also an experience. From a distance, the opal-shaped lamp resembles an illuminating frisbee. On walking past the lamp, you discover how the lamp catches the light and creates its own refractions. Like circular ripples in the water when you cast a stone into a glassy forest lake. The effect is almost magical. It leaves you with a desire to feel and touch it to understand. Because even though Ripls appears light and simple on the face of it, it remains elusive and hard to fathom.
The designer The designer behind Ripls is Jakob Wagner. Jakob Wagner was born in Copenhagen in 1963, and over the years has been responsible for a wide range of recognised products spanning professional designs for the medical and sports worlds as well as products for the home. Jakob Wagner s simple yet sophisticated work expresses the essence of a product in a minimalist, poetic and playful way. His design process is detailed, and considers all aspects of the user experience, which results in timeless and harmonious designs. And it is exactly these properties that characterise Ripls. Jakob Wagner says: At first glance, you are struck by the simplicity of the design, and you can even have 50 of these lamps installed in a single room. On closer inspection, you discover that the lamp also casts light against the wall, which has the effect of almost pulling the lamp away from it. If you study the lamp further, you will see how the wave pattern causes the light to create ripples in the water.

Carefully conceived in every detail Ripls consists of a concave clear front with ripples like rings in water. The ripples break up the light, causing the lamp to change appearance depending on your angle of view. The concave shape intensifies the light towards the center, while it becomes less intense towards the edges. Deep within the lamp is a diffuser, which creates a sense of depth at the front. The sleek look makes Ripls appear like a floating disk, while the perforated housing cause the indirect light to form a halo around the lamp.

Ripls Design: Jakob Wagner Concept: The fixture emits diffused light. The front consist of a concave clear front with ripples like rings in water. The ripples refract light in the front creating a subtle change of appearance depending on viewing angle. The concave form outline the refracting creating a higher intensity light towards the center fading off toward the edges. A diffuser offset sits deep in the fixture creating a sense of depth in the front. A slim housing creates the appearance of a floating disk while perforations in the opaque housing allows indirect light to create a halo around the fixture. Finish: Clear reflective front, white opal diffuser, and satin mat white housing. Material: Rear housing: Injection molded polycarbonate. Diffuser: Opalescent PMMA (tbc), clear front: Clear UV resistant polycarbonate. Mounting: Terminal strip: 1x5x2.5mm2.
