Dear Presidents It is that important time of year again when we welcome you and your society members to join us for our 2015 District 15 Annual General Meeting. This year it will be held on Saturday, April 25th, at the Learning Enrichment Foundation Centre, hosted by the Roselands Horticultural Society. The theme for this year s event is Small but Mighty and our presenter is Carol Dunk. Carol is the Past President of the OHA. A very avid and devoted promotor of everything healthy, beneficial and positive for our environment. The theme of her presentation will be A new Kind of Gardener, a talk about the need for gardeners to work for the planet in their gardens. As she says gardening used to be just for "pretty" but now it can become an important force for curing the ills of our planet. One Small action in one small garden can make a Mighty difference. Our representative from the Ontario Horticultural Association will be Suzanne Hanna, Vice President, OHA. She will keep you in touch with the importance of the organization to us all and I am sure will entertain you while sharing with us. The registration for the day will be $30.00 per person. This fee will include a Continental Breakfast, Morning Coffee break and Lunch with dessert. Yes, there is an increase this year. Regretfully something beyond our control! Once again, if there is any difference in income to expenses it will come from your District funds and proceeds from our irresistible draw. The meeting starts at 9:30 am sharp and will adjourn as close to 3:00 as possible. Parking is free. A map showing the location and directions is included in this package. Please remember to bring your banner with its stand to display during the meeting. A table will be available to place all and any flyers for upcoming events that you may have to share with fellow society members. All societies are asked to bring a door prize with a value preferably not to exceed $25.00. Every registered member will receive a draw ticket in their package for these gifts. We encourage you to participate in this tradition. Thank you in advance, in case it gets missed on the day. Flower show entries can be placed between 8:15 am and 9:15 am. See show schedule for details. Please encourage your members to attend and to enter the Flower Show which includes a judged photography section this year. We look forward to seeing many design and horticultural entries. There is a great youth class, please involve your groups. Roselands was established in 1926, and met for decades at Roselands School. At that time, the district was known as Roselands because of the wild roses that grew so profusely throughout the area. The wild roses are no longer prevalent, but Roselands Horticultural Society continues as a small but mighty presence in the neighbourhood. About The Learning Enrichment Foundation: The Learning Enrichment Foundation (LEF) has been serving the former city of York in northwest Toronto for more than 30 years. Since 1978, they developed from a youth theatre project into one of the leading community economic development organizations in Toronto, with 300 employees serving more than 10,000 people every year. Judging will be in accordance with the Ontario Judging and Exhibiting Standards for Horticulture and Floral Design, 2003 edition. 3. Competition is limited to members or youth members in good standing of any Horticultural Society in District 15. 4. Each entry must be accompanied by a completed official OHA entry tag, which will be available from your Society President and at the District 15 AGM. Exhibitor s name and Society name must be on each entry. If possible, state cultivar(s) of exhibit to enhance the educational value of the show. 5. All exhibits must be placed on the show tables between 8:15 and 9:15 a.m. the day of the show. Judging begins promptly at 9:30 a.m. Exhibits must remain in place until meeting adjourns at approximately 3:00 p.m. All exhibits must be removed before 4:00 p.m. If you are unable to retrieve your exhibit(s), please delegate a member of your society to do so on your behalf. 6. The placing of exhibits is the responsibility of the exhibitor. The Show Committee will be available to assist you if you are unsure of the placement. Only the Show Committee is authorized to move cultural exhibits for spacing purposes. Design entries are to be moved only by the exhibitors. 7. Definitions of key terms in this schedule are on the following pages. 8. The District and Host Society will take all reasonable precautions, but will not be held responsible for any loss or damage to the exhibitor s property. 9. The Show Committee may draw up any additional rules or subdivide classes when deemed necessary. Decorative Design Rules 1. All entries must be pre-registered by Thursday, April 16, 2015 with Cathy Faber at 416-233- 9990 or crwf@sympatico.ca. Classes 1-3 have a maximum of 5 entries each, Classes 4-6 have a maximum of 7 entries each. 2. Each exhibitor is permitted only one entry per class in the design division. 3. A design may be with or without accessories. 4. Emphasis will be placed on the use of fresh natural plant material unless otherwise specified. A judicious use of painted and/or dyed plant material is acceptable. No artificial plant material is permissible. 5. All designs are to be the work of the exhibitor. 6. The space allotted for each exhibit in Classes 1-3 is 61cm (24 ) wide by 76 cm (30 ) deep, on a

table that is approx. 76 cm (30 ) from the floor. Background is a white wall, no niches. 7. Class 4 (small design) space allotted is 30 cm (12 ) wide by 30 cm (12 ) deep, with a white background, displayed approx. 107 cm (42 ) above floor. 8. Classes 5 and 6 (miniatures) will be displayed in white L-shaped niches, 14.5cm (5 ¾ ) wide x 15 cm (6 ) high x 13cm (5 ) deep. They will be exhibited approx. 122 cm (48 ) above floor. Horticultural Rules 1. The exhibitor must have grown all cultural exhibits. 2. Potted plants must have been cared for by the exhibitor for a minimum of three months prior to the show. 3. Only one entry per class except in Any Other Cultivar where three entries are permitted, providing they are different cultivars. 4. Exhibitors must provide their own containers for cultural entries. Containers will not be supplied. 5. It is the exhibitor s responsibility to ensure the exhibits are entered into the correct class and named where possible. 6. Where a definite number or quantity is specified, no more or less may be exhibited. 7. Any bud showing colour must be considered a bloom. 8. Staking, wiring or tying is not permitted in cut flower classes, but is allowed in houseplant classes. 9. A foliage plant is a plant grown primarily for foliage. Insignificant flowers may be present. 10. Diseased, insect-infested or inferior quality plant material will be refused entry. All exhibits must be passed by a member of the Classification Team. 11. Tulips should be shown with no more than 2 sets of leaves attached to stem. (See OJES p.66.) Special Exhibit Rules 1. Plant material may be purchased prior to the show. 2. Accessories are permitted. 3. Each entry may be completed by one or more individuals working together, or a Society. Names of all participants must be on the entry card. Photography Rules In addition to the general rules below: Prints must be submitted to Shirley Smiley, 80 Inverdon Road, Etobicoke, ON M9C 4M1. Entries must be received by April 3, 2015. 1. All photographs must have been taken by the exhibitor. 2. Any image size up to 4 x 6". Images must be matted or mounted to a maximum of 5 x 7" and ready to hang. 3. This is a print competition. Electronic file submissions are not permitted. 4. Each exhibitor is allowed one entry per class in the photography division. 5. Photographs must have been taken in Ontario in the past 24 months and should feature horticulture in some way. 6. Each print must have an entry tag attached to the back of the matte/mount. 7. No name or title of any kind is permitted on the front of the print. 8. Prints must be picked up at the end of the meeting.

The designer uses the elements of design: space, line, form, colour, texture, and pattern in the accepted principles of art: balance, rhythm, proportion, scale, contrast, and dominance to interpret a theme and create a design of harmony and distinction. Miniature A design with maximum dimensions of 12.7 cm ( 5 ) in any direction ( height, width, depth, and diagonal.) For good proportion, the container should not exceed 3.5 cm (1.5 ) in height. Scape A leafless flower stem arising from the ground. Each scape carries a number of flower buds depending on the cultivar. See page 104, Ontario Judging and Exhibiting Standards for Horticulture and Floral Design, 2003 Edition. Small Design A design from 13.9 cm to 25.4 cm ( 5 ½ - 10 inches), and which must not exceed 25.4 cm (10 inches ) in any direction. ( height, width, depth, diagonal.) Matted or Mounted Photographs Matting consists of placing a matte board on top of a photograph, with the opening being the same size as the photograph, and affixing the photograph to the back of the matte with tape. Mounting consists of adhering the photograph to a rigid backing like foam core or card stock.
