About the Division The Fire Division was established in June 2008 with the mission of serving as a platform to bring together stakeholders and professionals from both the local industry and international fire arenas; to share their vast array of knowledge and experience in order that we can serve our communities with the best collective wisdom built on the latest research data, most advanced simulation techniques and also most importantly new ways of thinking. The objectives of the Division are to: Promote the general advancement of science and engineering Foster a spirit of friendly collaboration Encourage exchange of information and ideas Raise the image and standing of engineers Organize activities and talks The Division Committee strives to achieve these objectives through organizing learned society activities including conferences, seminars, technical presentations, forums, visits, workshops and symposia. Message from Chairman I sincerely extend my warmest welcome to all of you to attend the 4th Annual Dinner of the HKIE Fire Division. It is my pleasure and privilege to work with a team of fully dedicated Committee Members for the Fire Division in Session 2011/2012. The Fire Division has been established for four years. It is a success with the membership growing from 50 to over 500 in such short period while the number of membership is still growing in a fast pace. Truly benefited from past Committees under great leadership of the past Chairmen, the Fire Division Committee gained a solid foundation and will continue with the great achievement in maintaining respectful relationship with the government, other professional institutions, the academia and the industry to generate synergy in taking forward the objectives of the Division. For this year s Annual Dinner, we are most honored to have Mr. Chan Chor-kam, Andy, FSDSM, Director of Fire Services, Hong Kong Fire Services Department, to be our Guest of Honour tonight. We look forward to every Annual Dinner as it is a perfect occasion for guests to foster relationship and friendship with their business and work partners. As one of the major events of the Fire Division, we hope everyone here would expand their network under a pleasant and relax atmosphere. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to the Chairman of the Annual Dinner Organizing Committee, Ir Tam Tai Keung and his team for their devoted efforts and time in making this Annual Dinner a success. Message from Guest of Honour On the occasion of the 4 th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, Fire Division, my colleagues and I in the Fire Services Department would like to extend our sincere congratulations to the Fire Division and its learned members for their excellent work in the development of fire science and in raising the professionalism and profile of our fire engineers in the past four years. Since its establishment in 2008, the Fire Division has attracted a growing membership of fire engineering experts, professionals and practitioners from the local and international industries. The Fire Division has a commendable mission to serve the community through the collective wisdom of its learned members, built upon their professional expertise, technological research and innovative ideas for the development of fire science and advancement of fire engineering practices. We are delighted to see the Fire Division growing from strength to strength and its members striving for excellence untiringly. The Fire Services Department and the HKIE Fire Division have common objectives and shared vision, in that, we play different roles in upgrading the fire safety standards of our community and safeguarding our people from the perils of fire, with a view to building a safe and sustainable Hong Kong. In the time to come, we look forward to continue working with the Fire Division and its learned members in a concerted effort to develop fire science and encourage wider and more effective use of fire engineering to address fire safety issues. Fire Engineering Digest Database of Fire Engineering Materials For the purpose of knowledge and experience sharing, the HKIE Fire Division is developing an informative on-line database - Fire Engineering Digest (FE Digest) - which contains articles, publications, contents and other materials in relation to the technology and development of Fire Engineering. The materials will be grouped under a list of topics including Fire Safety Design & Management, Managing Risks at Fires, Fire Safety Education and Applications, Law and Regulations, and Fire Science. This Website will be exclusively for use by members of Fire Division only. In an effort to ensure that the Website continue to deliver useful and comprehensive fire science literature database possible, records of papers and articles will be regularly increased and updated. In this connection contributions from members are most welcomed, please contact Ir Charles Chu at mcchu@netvigator.com or Ir Charlie Wong @ Charlie.wong@aecom.com for details. The FE Digest is to be available in 2012. The Fire Division will keep members posted of developments. 17
