Condition Musty Odor from Heating and Ventilation System Unpleasant, musty odor from Heating and Ventilation system. 87 06 01 May 26, 2006, 2005566/2, Supersedes Group 87 number 03-01, dated May 13, 2003 due to updated treatment procedures. Model(s) Year Eng. Code Trans. Code VIN Range From VIN Range To All 2000 > 2007 All All All All Technical Background Odor mainly occurs after vehicle has been sitting (unused) at least 5 hours and within 20 to 60 seconds after vehicle is first started. This odor may be caused by residual condensate in and around evaporator. If odor is noticeable without engine started and Heater, A/C system running, this may be due to mildew in the passenger compartment not from the A/C system. Production Solution No production change required. Service Condensate is a normal condition in all A/C systems. This odor can be eliminated by using a product called AirSept Cooling Coil Coating. Prior to performing AirSept odor treatment procedures: Condensate drain(s) in bottom of plenum chamber must be open and free of any debris. Bulkhead must be sealed (no leaks/water ingress into passenger compartment). Evaporator water drain valve (behind bulkhead insulation) must open freely. Page 1 of 6

AirSept Air Conditioning Odor Treatment See Required Parts and Tools for needed supplies. WARNING Keep product out of the reach of children. Wear skin and eye protection (prevent contact with skin or eyes). If product comes in contact with skin or eyes, rinse thoroughly with clean water. DO NOT inhale vapors (stay away from open vehicle windows until product has dried). If Possible, application should be conducted in an open environment, or at least with adequate circulation and ventilation. ALWAYS read and follow accompanying AirSept product Application and Safety Precautions! Actual working time is approx. 30 minutes. Complete procedure takes approx. 2 hours including drying/hardening time. Follow procedure precisely. If specified drying/hardening time IS NOT complied with, the product will be washed off by condensation and treatment WILL NOT work. If applied properly, AirSept will inhibit the new growth of bacteria and mold on the coated surfaces for approximately 1 year. Vehicle Preparation Cover all seats and cover carpeting below passenger side instrument panel. Remove blower motor, blower resistor or right side plenum cover (Remove air intake adapter, pollen filter, if equipped) to access evaporator. Note: Take care not to damage seal when removing air intake adapter. Clean out any accumulation of debris (leaves, twigs etc.) in the plenum. Place a catch basin below condenser drain. AirSept CleanEvap Application Connect AIR62637 applicator tool to shop air. Air supply must be oil free. Supply line pressure to tool must be 85 to 110 PSI, too little pressure will not provide the desired coverage. Page 2 of 6

Thoroughly shake bottle of AirSept CleanEvap and attach to AIR62637 applicator tool. Insert flexible applicator tool into plenum with nozzle pointed towards evaporator. Apply 8 ounces of AirSept CleanEvap on the evaporator, surrounding gasket and plenum surfaces. Ensure adequate coverage and allow to stand for 5 minutes. When the bottle is empty: Rinse and refill bottle with clean water. Apply to cleaned evaporator and plenum surfaces to rinse away loosened contamination. Install blower motor or blower resistor. Disable A/C compressor clutch (remove appropriate fuse or disconnect manually at compressor). Set climate controls as follows: Close all windows and sunroof, if applicable. Open 2 windows approx. 1cm (1/2 in.). Illustrations are used for reference to procedure only, actual A/C control views may differ from what is shown. Temperature control to full HOT. Blower on HIGHEST speed. Air distribution on bi-level (footwell and panel ducts). A/C switched OFF. Start engine and run engine for approx. 20 minutes. Recirculation switched ON. WARNING Never start or let the engine run in a confined or enclosed unventilated area. Exhaust fumes from the engine contain carbon monoxide, which is a colorless and odorless gas. Carbon monoxide can be fatal if inhaled. Never leave vehicle unattended while engine is running. An unattended vehicle with a running engine is potentially hazardous. Page 3 of 6

After 20 minutes the evaporator should be dry (free of any moisture). Shut engine OFF. Ensure evaporator has fully dried. AirSept Cooling Coil Coating Application Remove the blower motor or blower resistor. Connect AIR62637 applicator tool to shop air. Air supply must be oil free. Supply line pressure to tool must be 85 to 110 PSI, too little pressure will not provide the desired coverage. Thoroughly shake bottle of AirSept Cooling Coil Coating and attach to AIR62637 applicator tool. Insert flexible applicator tool in plenum with nozzle pointed towards evaporator. Apply 4 ounces of AirSept Cooling Coil Coating on to the evaporator, surrounding gasket, and plenum surfaces. Ensure adequate coverage. When the bottle is empty: Rinse and refill with clean HOT water. Spray applicator tool into a trash container to clean it. When the bottle is empty, remove and discard the bottle. Install blower motor or blower resistor. Ensure A/C compressor clutch is disabled from previous step (remove appropriate fuse or disconnect manually at compressor). Page 4 of 6

Set climate controls as follows: Close all windows and sunroof, if applicable. Open 1 window approx. 1cm (1/2 in.). Illustrations are used for reference to procedure only, actual A/C control views may differ from what is shown. Temperature control full HOT. Blower to third highest speed. Air distribution on bi-level (footwell and panel ducts). A/C switched OFF. Start engine and run engine for approx. 20 minutes. Recirculation switched OFF. After 20 minutes the evaporator should be dry (free of any moisture). Shut engine OFF Enable compressor clutch (install appropriate fuse or reconnect at compressor). If evaporator IS NOT fully dried, AirSept Cooling Coil Coating will wash away with newly formed condensate. AirSept Application Record Enter date of AirSept treatment into the vehicle maintenance record. After AirSept Treatment Explain to the customer that running the air conditioner periodically during spring and fall months reduces the chance for airborne pollutants to adhere to the evaporator and housing.
