Ready, Set, Go T he holiday season is upon us and many of us celebrate them by opening up our homes to friends and family. A favorite pastime of mine during the holidays and throughout the year is to create a festive table setting for the meal. hile Lance is busy cooking, I design a tablescape which sets the mood for our guests. For me, besides being a creative outlet, it s a way of letting our friends and family know how welcome they are in our home. I like to tailor the table setting to both the menu and the season. The autumn and winter seasons allow for richer, warmer colors, to be used for table linens and flowers. I enjoy layering, using a cloth with table runners, charger plates and finally the plates. I like to mix the dishes, using the dinner plate from one set and the salad plate from another. Napkins don t have to match the tablecloth either. I try to incorporate a favorite accessory item or two usually to add a whimsical touch. I try to keep the flowers simple and low so they do not impede conversation across the table. A few bunches of various flowers cut short and placed in low square vases is one of my favorite ways to add life to the table using one color per vase; And when the party is over, I can distribute them throughout our home to enjoy for days to come. The table setting is anchored by the large Chinese export porcelain bowl which relates to the French Toile chairs and wall upholstery fabric. The various shades of green used in the table runner and napkins is accented with coral pink alstroemeria lilies and custom napkin rings. Drabware charger plates under black and gold rimmed German antique porcelain dinner plates continue the theme. Neoclassic terra cotta candlesticks and a pair of porcelain greyhounds complete the look. Left: A Hanukkah table setting I created for a Las Vegas magazine a few seasons ago. Market News I nteriors by Cary Vogel attended both the Summer 2012 Las Vegas Furniture Market and the Autumn 2012 High Point International Furniture Market. It was very exciting to be part of and to feel the buzz in the air at both markets. All indications are that the industry is recovering and business is on the upswing. This was evidenced by the increase in attendance numbers at the furniture markets as well as the number of new product introductions by the manufacturers. Everyone is excited to engage in 2013, optimistic for a year of encouragement and recovery for the industry at large. Recent Publications 5
Recent Publications e were delighted to be featured in the April, 2012 home edition of Luxury Las Vegas Magazine (www.luxurylv.com). Carolyn Muse Grant, who wrote the article, beautifully captured our design aesthetic and our essence. DINING ROOM: A classic Toile du Jouy in shades of green and tobacco is used as wall upholstery and on the set of dining chairs for a lively dining room setting. An over-scaled Italian lantern is the room s stunning focal point. 6 he could never go back to white walls. Additionally, when Robins said he would like dark walls in this house, Vogel agreed. Their previous home was smaller and had lighter walls, so this home gave them the opportunity to go darker. e re collected a lot of art and it all looks so wonderful against these darker walls. It feels more grounded, and yet your eyes go to it more readily, Vogel adds. They also wanted dark floors. I do like for the carpets to be a little lighter in color because with darker floors and walls, it could get too heavy handed, comments Vogel. I love the contrast. Asked about the inspiration for his Summerlin home, which has the architecture of a charming, picturesque European hillside village with some Arts & Crafts influences, Vogel reveals, I would say my thought process was to create something timeless and classic. Lance and I were at an age where we could do more at once. e wanted something that would stand the test of time, and look good in 10 years. I tried to select things we wouldn t tire of, and I wanted it to feel right in the community we re living in, as well as be appropriate anywhere in the world. I didn t want to define it as just Las Vegas. Vogel also very much knew what style he didn t want. Contemporary settings are pretty much set there s not much room for additional things. I believe that people like to collect, or bring things home from their travels, or display things their children bring them. You want to be able to incorporate them nicely into the interiors. But when you have a stage set like some contemporaries, you can t do it. I like layers and texture but I don t like clutter. In this house I can bring home something that strikes my fancy. There s room to expand. One area in their home ready for additions is the open stairway to the BY DESIGN ONER SUMMERLIN RESIDENCE GETS DESIGNER S ON COLORFUL TOUCH by carolyn muse-grant hen you enter the Summerlin home designer Cary Vogel shares with his partner Lance Robins, you are instantly embraced by a warm, beautiful, and welcoming space. You would easily think you had been dropped into the sophisticated space of a big city dwelling like that of a New York City loft, a pied-àterre in Paris, or a cottage in Los Angeles because it is so finely appointed. Absolutely every décor style is represented with the exception of contemporary and yet it all melds perfectly together to create classic and eclectic elegance. Vogel has traveled a long and illustrious road to create this home. Vogel knew as a child that he wanted to be a designer. I was moving furniture around when my parents weren t home, he says, and always creating spaces I would like to live in when I grew up. I would take catalogues like Macy s home furnishings, pick out the pieces I liked and do a little floor plan. But I come from a family that favors doctors and lawyers, so I went through one year of law school, and finally had the nerve to say this is not for me. second floor. It is the home to art that the couple has collected, but has room for more treasures. One new found treasure was purchased at the recent High Point market. The room had been finished for three years, but Vogel felt it was missing that certain something. hen he spotted this piece at the market, he knew that was it. It s called a perching chair. It s petite. It s red. It s awesome. They like for friends to come and sit in their family room while they prepare for dinner. The little perching chair has casters and moves around easily for guests to create groupings. Vogel and Robins love to entertain. That s the reason they bought their Summerlin residence. They have a spacious kitchen, larger than before; and there is a formal dining room, which they previously did not have. They also run the design studio out of their home and have ample space to do that. Robins has a nice sized office, and Vogel has a small desk in the library, but his favorite work area is on the kitchen april 2012 luxury las vegas 35 april 2012 luxury las vegas 37
