ATLAS CONCEPT Inspired by stacks of books, ATLAS is a response to the increasing urban and progressive character of Newcastle by creating more extroverted puclic spaces for community and interaction. Two wings rise up like stacks of books with weathered steel facades representing the bindings and white panel siding representing book pages. A thick black metal skin wraps around the books and holds them in place. The two wings are connected by a densely vegetated courtyard that houses spaces for community interaction in a relaxed and natural setting. Rich vegetation will be overflowing from the courtyard onto the street below, in the form of trellises and planters. Residential units get plenty of light and views of either the courtyard, the library green roof, or 9th street. There is opportunity for interaction on various levels through vegetated decks, balconies, courtyard and accessible roof decks with stunning views of distant woods. CONCEPT PAGE GV /TD (SP)A004
