PLUGGED IN 21 st Annual Christmas Wish Program Your Touchstone Energy Partner During the holiday season, thoughts often turn to those who need their spirits lifted. For the 21st year, WIGM 1490 AM, WKEB 99.3 FM, Taylor Electric Cooperative, along with Touchstone Energy and area cooperatives are sponsoring the Christmas Wish Program. In following with the cooperative principle Concern for Community, the contributors to Christmas Wish have undertaken a mission to bring holiday cheer into the lives of those around us. In 2016, we granted wishes that helped bring a little joy to children in our community who were battling serious illnesses, friends and neighbors who had lost loved ones over the previous year, and community members with disabilities who needed a little help meeting their needs. And there were more nearly 150 families were touched by the Christmas Wish program! Sponsors The 21st annual Christmas Wish Program is brought to you by area Touchstone Energy Cooperatives, including Dairyland Power Cooperative, Taylor Electric Cooperative, Clark Electric Cooperative, Price Electric Cooperative, and Jump River Electric Cooperative. Also sponsoring the program are the Taylor County Association of Cooperatives, People s Choice Credit Union, Co-op Transport, Heartland Co-op, Ag Country Farm Credit, Taylor Credit Union, The Medford Cooperative, Lakewood Credit Union, Little Black Mutual Insurance, WIGM 1490 AM and WKEB 99.3 FM Radio, RCU, ProVision Partners Cooperative, and Medford County Market. STAY COZY AND WARM WITH SAFE, CLEAN, EFFICIENT ELECTRIC HEAT Whether it s used to complement another heating system or is the primary system in your home, electric heat is a great option. It s easy to use, clean, and energy efficient. It s also cost-effective, when used appropriately. There are several types of electric heaters available to meet your home s specific needs. Baseboard heaters are one of the most simple, economical types of electric heat. They re hardwired to an electrical circuit. The baseboard element generates heat, which warms the air around it. The natural convection process circulates the warm air throughout the room. Baseboards in general are the least expensive type of electric heat to install but they also take longer to warm a room. In order to operate properly, they need at least a foot of clearance from furniture, drapes, or any other objects. Radiant floor heaters usually come in the form of electric cables, tubes of heated water, or electric mats installed just below the floor s surface. These systems work particularly well with concrete floors because the heat absorbed by the concrete can keep a room warm for several hours. Radiant panels, which are installed in the walls or ceiling, and cove heaters, which are installed where the wall and ceiling come together, emit radiation energy to keep you warm without heating up the air inside a room. It s kind of like standing in the direct sunlight you re hot while in you re in the sunlight, but as soon as you step into the shade you no longer feel that direct heat. Space heaters, unlike other types of electric heat that s hardwired into your home, are plugged into power outlets. That means you can move the heater to any room where it s needed. Space heaters can be cost-effective if they re used to warm a particular room while heat to the rest of the house is kept turned down. Heat pumps are one of the most energy efficient heating options. Although all electric heat is 100 percent efficient, these heaters use heat from the environment to provide heat to your home, which in some cases means you get more heat output than you put into the system. Unlike the other electric heaters, these can also provide cooling when necessary. Heat pumps are usually more expensive to install, but they can be significantly cheaper to operate. Wall heaters, also referred to as forced fan heaters, combine a heating element and a fan to circulate heated air throughout a room. The heating element works just like one in a baseboard heater, but wall heaters have a fan that helps push warm air throughout the room. MERRY, BRIGHT AND EFFICIENT HOLIDAY LIGHTING Decking the halls doesn t have to take a toll on your energy bill! Keep your holiday lighting merry, bright and energy efficient with LED light strands. Consider replacing older light strands with new ENERGY STAR LED lights. LED strands are 70 percent more efficient and last 10 times longer than the age-old standard bulbs. You can get the look of cozy lighting with LEDs. Just look for warm white on the label. Unlike older light strands, LED lights give off virtually no heat, making them safer for kids and pets (and reindeer). Save energy by setting a timer for outdoor lighting and decorations. Program the timer so the lights turn on in the evening and turn off later at night when you typically go to sleep. Source: Dept. of Energy 16 Wisconsin Energy Cooperative News
