Florida Sun Coast Orchids is a 5 acre spread in Myakka City where Jim and a part time assistant grow cattleya, Phals, Dendrobium, Vanda, and Encyclia orchids. He has traveled the world in search of rare and unusual orchids. You ll learn basic skills such as controlling pests, fertilizing, light exposure, potting, and proper watering. This program is in addition to our new classes on orchid culture on meeting nights. Mentors and mentees visit each other s homes to discuss orchid culture and share ideas, often on a one-on-one basis. To become a teacher or student, contact Carol Nissen at ccnissen@verizon.net. Volume 2, Issue 2 February, 2014 Pg. 6 President s Message This month is our annual show Orchids by Lemon Bay. It s a great affair because we all pitch in to make it a success. There are many ways you can help, some big, some small, but all very important. Here are the areas we need help: Plants for Display: Registration is Monday, Feb 24-Tuesday, Feb 25. Let s get our plants ready to make our display the best in show again this year. Contact Carol Nissen. Show Set-up: Wed. Feb 26 3-5 p.m. No experience needed! Unload EAOS trailer, set up curtains, cover tables, lay down pre-cut plastic sheets on floors; contact Edward Baldwin or Cathy Mrasak. Food for Kitchen: Drop off Wed. 3-5 pm or Thursday 8:30-9:00 am. Food needed for 3 days for our workers and vendors. Have a favorite recipe? Bring it in to share, hot or cold. Contact Mary Commer. Remember, the show is our biggest income for the year. In order to have a show next year, we must work together this year. Only 2 years until our 50 th year! Ann Baldwin EAOS 2014 Sarasota Show Orchid Exhibit Thank you to all members who participated in various ways with the installation of the exhibit. Carol Nissen spent a great deal of time taking care of registration; labels were made by Edward Baldwin and Carol Stein; Ann and Edward Baldwin transported the needed staging; Corey Plasek, Edna McClenney, and Carol Nissen covered the orchid and foliage pots, located the registration numbers, and put the labels in place; Edna also assisted with the physical installation; Elaine Squires, Donna Hiltebeitel, Mary Commer, and Barbara Reitz helped with take-down. Bob Hague kindly let us borrow many of his orchid and foliage plants to have enough color and variety to complete the exhibit; his orchids were just-for -show and not entered for judging. The basic staging was made from huge Styrofoam blocks found by Ed and Hanna Opatrny. Again, much thanks! We had 26 plants registered for judging and won approximately a dozen ribbons. The Venice installation will be taking place soon and the amount of work will be doubled, as will the need for twice the number of plants. We need members to participate; do not assume someone else will do it! New members and those who have been around for a while should make plans now to either work at the exhibit, have plants ready, or both. The same core members who do this work repeatedly are entitled to a break. Remember, It take a village to make an orchid exhibit. Toni Marie
Volume 2, Issue 2 February, 2014 Pg. 7 Englewood Area Orchid Society History - 33 Years Highlights by Catherine Varney in 1999 In July, 1966, Mr. W Hamor called a meeting to discuss forming an orchid society and met in his home. 40 charter members are listed that first year. The first four years, society members met in homes, usually the Hamors. They would have an installation dinner for the January meeting and two picnics at homes during the year. The group entered exhibits in Manatee, Sarasota, Venice, Port Charlotte orchid shows that first year. They held the first judged orchid show for EAOS February 18, and 19, 1969 at the Englewood Savings and Loan (in business 6 months at the time of the show). They invited Manatee, Sarasota, Venice and Port Charlotte Societies, John Fisher Orchids and Mr. Bates of Ellenton, Fl. Florida Power & Light donated $15 and award ribbons were paid for by the Englewood Chamber of Commerce. Englewood Orchid Society won a plaque for Best Plant in the show and a plaque for Best Society Display. Awards were given for Best Arrangement and Best Society display. Admission was free and orchids were given to the first 500 women attending. (Note) from minutes...on 12-12-66 Mr. Butrick suggested that the Sheriff's Dept. be notified in order that there be a deputy to help direct traffic at the Feb. 18-19 show. There were 2000 visitors. Programs have included noted growers and judges in the orchid field such as Mr. Hollingsworth of Sun Bulb Co. who wrote "Growing Orchids in Florida". In 1988, Penny Micklow of Micklow Orchids, John Sherwood of Sherwood Forest, Dabbert Orchids, Palmers Orchids, Ken Anderson, Roger Miller, Bill Fajen, Louis Del Favero, Jerry Sellers, Walter Perrin and others were speakers. Also programs were held on photographing orchids, potting, division, pests and problems. Slide shows were given by some speakers. Members were taught to judge plants and were to bring a plant to the meeting to be judged. Awards were given at the end of each year to those who had the highest awards. demonstrations on making corsages ere given several times over the years from 1970 on by Mary Lou Evans (Evanses joined in 1970). Mary Lou served as Vice-President in 1980 and President in 1985. Larry Evans was Vice President in 1973 and President in 1974. He gave programs several times each year on propagation, care, etc. In 1972 he suggested planting native orchids at Indian Mound Park which the club did. The Blue Pagoda was built in 1974 and members were invited to have meetings there and weekend workshops. The Evanses were given a plaque and lifetime membership on May 12, 1979. Over the years, certain names appear over and over of those who worked hard to maintain the EAOS such as, W. Hamor, Mrs. Isabell Waddle, Howard VanHerm, Rose Kennedy, Gertrude Locker, Miriam Besemer, Mrs. Carl Ecklund, Helen Rothard, Mrs. Lilie Patti, Kate Thompson, Veronica Edwards, Kathy Tenny, Mary Dommermuth, Wanda Piat, Anne Johnston, and more recently, Emery and Mary Allstadt, Diana Harris, Larry Evans, Laverne and Bill Shaw, Bill and Gerri Prentiss, Red and Meridith Gearhart, Bull and Olga Durham. Of course, these are but a few of the members that continue to keep EAOS viable and growing in numbers now approaching 90 plus members each year. The orchid itself continues to be the main focus. The thousands of species and crosses delight and awe the beginner and expert alike. The flower is like no other with so many shapes and sizes. The AOS has taken trips to Florida greenhouses such as Palmers, Bibus, Camp Lot-a-Noise, Davidson's, Selby Gardens. Also Bud Prentiss arranged chartered bus trips to Miami International Orchid shows in 1992, 94, and 95. As a community effort, the club has for several years sponsored children that went to a summer nature camp. It has also sponsored a Lemon Bay High School senior that went on to college. Support to that student continued for three years. Members have also helped with beautification projects on Dearborn Street. A bench and plantings were placed in the name of EAOS. Years ago, orchids were naturalized in Indian Mound Park and plans are to do this again in Lemon Bay Park and Cedar Point Park in the year 2000. (Continued next page)
In 1969, four watercolor paintings were given to the Club. They were auctioned off and purchased by Mr. Fisher. The EAOS has put on it's own sponsored, judged orchid shows. The first one was held in 1967 on February 18 & 19th. The theme was "A Beginners Dream" and was held at the Englewood Savings & Loan. The next show was held on Feb. 17th, 1968 with the theme of "Orchids around the World". On Feb. 16th and 17th, 1969, the theme was "Orchids in the Garden". This event was held at the Englewood Elementary School Cafeterium. In 1970, on Feb. 14th and 15th, the theme was "Hearts and Flowers". Shows were also held in 1971 and 1972 but the theme are not known. In 1973, on Feb. 16th and 17th, a show with the theme of "Orchids by the Sea" was held at the Lemon Bay Jr. High School Gymatorium. There was no show in 1974. In 1975 and 1976, table shows were held at the 1st Federal Bank and were not judged. Their themes were "Around the World" and "As the World Turns" respectively. In March of 1977, "Orchids-Nature's Gems" was held at Lemon Bay Jr. High School. There were four societies, five hobbyists, and four commercial exhibitors displays and viewed by 1372 visitors. The last show held in 1978 was the 9th annual, judged show with the theme of "Shower of Orchids". In 1973 EAOS bought 11,000 prize ribbons for $101.10. AOS gave a bronze trophy and EAOS gave a plaque at these shows. For the last 10 years, the idea of sponsoring our own orchid show has been discussed off and on. This will become a reality March 24th and 25th in the year 2000. The theme will be "Orchids and Butterflies" and will be held at Lemon Bay Park. In the early 1990's, some members met regularly at Coney Island Restaurant for breakfast and conversation. EAOS Membership Information Date Signature Annual Family Membership is $15.00.
