We are very glad you have decided to study at Adnan Menderes University and we look forward to welcoming you in Aydın City. In this brief information package you will find some practical advices to help you with preparation for your arrival in Turkey and for living and studying in Aydın City. We hope this booklet will be useful for you and will make your stay in Aydın City as simple and enjoyable as possible. International Office and Erasmus Student Club at Adnan Menderes University (ESN - ADU) organize an Orientation Day at the first week of the first semester for you. We recommend you to attend it as thanks to this activity you will get a taste of the university and Aydın City and meet local students from the ESN club. Of course, you will meet other Erasmus exchange students from Europe. INFORMATION ON STUDENT VISA AND RESIDENCE PERMIT Turkey is a non-eu country, so every one of incoming Erasmus students DO NEED A STUDENT VISA! When you have filled in and sent us all the necessary documents for admission you will hopefully be accepted and a Letter of Acceptance will be sent to you by the International Office of Adnan Menderes University. You will for sure need this Letter of Acceptance for the visa procedure and also for your Home Institution. Please DO NOT FORGET to apply for a Turkish visa (student visa) before you will come to Turkey. All you have to do is to visit the nearest competent Turkish Consulate in your country with the necessary documents the Consulate will require (for the nearest Turkish Consulate please visit the website of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Turkey http://www.mfa.gov.tr). Please note that you can apply for student visa only if you have received all necessary documents from our side. 2
All the incoming international students who will study at least one term in Turkey have to get a residence permit from the police station in two weeks time upon their arrival in the city they will reside during the exchange period, so you need to apply for the RESIDENCE PERMIT at the Police Station/Emniyet (to get a residence permit, you will need 5 passport size photos, a document to be given by the International Office and your passport. For the application procedure, you ll need to pay a fee of 180 Turkish Liras to the Police Station). GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE UNIVERSITY Adnan Menderes University which has a privileged position in our wonderful city, Aydın, was founded on 3 July 1992. It takes its name from a former Prime Minister of Turkey in 1950s; Mr. Adnan Menderes. At the preliminary stage, our university started education only in the city centre and in Nazilli City. The university has six faculties, three schools, three institutes, one state conservatory, thirteen vocational schools, and research and application centres in various campuses. With a scientific approach, Adnan Menderes University has also proved that producing information in every area is necessary for development. In this context, the University has also had international achievements. Adnan Menderes University, with student and staff mobility programmes (LLP - ERASMUS), has contacted and concluded mutual agreements (85 partner universities in Europe) with other European universities. Benefiting from all the Information Technology opportunities, central library provides our students and staff with all the necessary data and documents. It also accomplishes source sharing in the framework of cooperation with national and international data centres. In Aydın, in the central campus there is a big dormitory governed by Higher Education Credit and Dormitories Institution. Besides, there are many more private dormitories in Aydın and Nazilli. 3
Having a profound academic staff, Adnan Menderes University focused not only on its staff and students but also people of Aydın. The Directorate of Health, Culture and Sports organizes many activities in order to make the students enjoy in their spare time. Thanks to these activities students are encouraged to improve their personal skills and make good use of their leisure time. Culture & Art Festival held in every May ranks first among these activities. At the same time, there are many student clubs that serve to the same objective. These clubs organize various activities in line with their basic objectives. HOW TO ARRIVE TO AYDIN Where to find Aydın City Aydın City lies in the western part of Turkey and it is located in the Aegean Region of Turkey and is surrounded by the provinces of Denizli to the east, İzmir and Manisa to the north and Muğla to the south. It is the third largest city of the Aegean Region. The city is 64 meters above sea level and spreads overran area of 8.007 km 2. It is bordered by the Aydın Mountains to the north and the Menteşe Mountains to the south. The Büyük Menderes Basin lies between these mountains and forms a rich agricultural area covered by silt deposits washed down over thousands of years by the Büyük Menderes River. Aydın City is situated at the cradle of civilizations and very close to many ancient Greek and Ionian cities like Ephesus, Miletus, Didyma, Priene, Aphrodisias and Hierepolis. Herodotus, the renowned historian, described Aydın as the land under the most beautiful sky in the world. With its potential in agriculture, tourism and industry and its highly qualified labour Aydın is one of the most rapidly developing cities of Turkey and the Aegean region. Aydın City, which has hosted various civilizations throughout history, took its name from Aydınoğlu Principality that reigned over the region just before the Ottoman Empire. How to travel to Aydın City There are several ways of getting to Aydın City and it s only up to you what way you prefer. However, the first step will be to arrange a flight from a European city to Turkey. By plane The closest international airport to Aydın City is İzmir Adnan Menderes International Airport, yet other than getting to this airport you can also find direct flights from European countries to İstanbul Atatürk International Airport or Antalya International Airport, but to be close and take the easy path just look for flights for İzmir Adnan Menderes or Istanbul Atatürk International Airports. If you are thinking of coming directly to İstanbul or Antalya International Airports by flight and prefer to go on travelling by bus instead of taking another flight to İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport, which is the nearest airport: - You can buy your tickets from any travelling company (intercity buses) you would like in İstanbul (Esenler Main Bus Terminal) or Antalya city bus terminals to Aydın City, but we might recommend you to buy your tickets from Pamukkale, Kamil Koç or Varan which are the best ones in Turkey (The ticket fee should be 50 75 Turkish Liras). In İstanbul, from Atatürk International Airport you can get to Esenler Bus Terminal by taking the METRO from the airport. The metro also goes to the city centre. If you come directly to İzmir International Airport: - You can get to Aydın City by intercity buses (you can take bus firms like Pamukkale or Aydın Turizm) from İzmir City Bus Terminal to Aydın City. To get to İzmir City Bus Terminal take ESHOT (city bus in red and white colours) buses from bus stop at the International Terminal Gate B. You will take the bus Number 204 and get off at the bus terminal. The ride takes nearly 40 minutes. The fee is around 6 TRY. By train Aydın City has train connections with many cities as İzmir, Denizli, Afyonkarahisar, Ankara and İstanbul, yet you may only find direct trains to Aydın City from İzmir and Denizli. If you come directly to İzmir Adnan Menderes International Airport or to İzmir City: - You can get to Aydın City by train (TCDD). You can get in the train from the airport. Here below please find the timetable for the train between the airport and Aydın City: from the AIRPORT from AYDIN CITY 08.31 06.31 10.45 07.53 14.45 10.40 15.54 14.13 18.00 18.23 Public transport in Aydin City Public transport system is very simple and consists of minibuses that you can use from 7 am in the morning to 11 pm at night. All in white minibuses go forth and back between the Main Campus and Aydın City centre every 10 minutes. The fee for students is only 1,25 TRY which you can pay directly to the driver. The minibuses/midibuses are called as Dolmuş (dolmush) in Turkey and you can take dolmush numbers 11, 15, 16 or 17 to get to the campus. If you have difficulty in remembering the right number for the dolmush then you can only seek for a sign ÜNİVERSİTE on the windshield of the midibus. From the bus terminal you can take number 11 to get to the main campus. 10
ACCOMMODATION International students can stay at private dormitories or guesthouses located in Aydın City, Nazilli City and Kuşadası with different capacities. Beside the dormitories, students can stay at flats or apartments (or apart hotels in Kusadasi) they will rent with their friends and share with local or international friends. Adnan Menderes University guarantees accommodation for international students in the dormitory in the main campus only for the fall semester if they apply for accommodation in June. International Office helps incoming students find affordable flats that they can share with other international students in Aydın City. It is also possible for international students to live together with native students and share the same flat with the native students. Free time There are many places and attractions to visit in Aydın City. Cinemas There are two modern cinemas in Aydın City Ceylan Sineması in city centre and Cinebonus in Forum Aydın Shopping Mall. The latter shows the latest movies and the ticket fee for students is around 8 10 Turkish Liras. Clubs There are many clubs and discotheques in Aydın City Museums Aydın Archeolgical Museum (open everyday except Mondays from 8 am to 5 pm) and Tralleis Antique City Relics. Shops There are two shopping malls in Aydın City. One is Tesco Kipa, which is in the city centre and the other is Forum Aydın, which also has a supermarket inside and is a little bit out of downtown. You can reach there by minibuses Number 10, 12, 11, 15 or 17. PRACTICAL INFORMATION Important phone numbers If you have serious illness and you cannot get to a doctor yourself and when urgent assistance is required to prevent a dangerous deterioration of health or threat to life, call free of charge (fixed or mobile telephone) 112. Banking If you decide to open a bank account in Turkey or if you need banking services you can benefit from national and international banks in the city such as İşbankası, Ziraat Bankası, Vakıfbank, Halkbank, Garantibank, Fortisbank, HSBC Bank or ING Bank. In the main campus in Aydın you will find 4 ATMs of different national and international banks. Bank working hours are generally from 9 a.m. to 5 a.m. Monday to Friday. They offer many services to you. All banks have ATMs (cash dispensers) and foreign exchange desks where you can exchange your currency. In some supermarkets and some shops you can pay in Euro
(in Aydın City you can pay in Euros in Tesco Kipa in Forum Aydın, yet you should always ask before you pay in Euros or Dollars), but it is the easiest way to pay in Turkish Liras. Mobile services In Turkey are main three mobile telephone networks. If you want to know more information, you can look at: Avea http://www.avea.com.tr/ Turkcell http://www.turkcell.com.tr Vodafone http://www.vodafone.com.tr/ All Internet sites are in English as well. They have different procedures for selling a Turkish sim-card to internationals, yet if you would like to buy one from Turkcell all you have to do is take your passport with you. Please do not forget to register your cell-phone s IMEI number when you are in Turkey as for security reasons it will be blocked if you do not register it in two weeks time. To register your cell-phone s IMEI number you can go to Turkcell shop in Forum Shopping Mall as they can speak English. The fee for registration is 10 TRY. 13
