Dear EUCALAND members and friends, we have passed some weeks full of EUCALAND activities. In March, we have had our 6th working meeting. This time we have met in Utrecht with our kind host Hans Renes. Everything was very well organised and we had a very intense working meeting and an extremely interesting excursion that was the perfect entrance in the 2013 landscape type: water meadows. The minutes have been circulated. In Utrecht we have also had a Members Assembly; the minutes have also been circulated. Both minutes will be uploaded to our webpage, as soon as we will have a free minute. Csaba Centeri is finishing the work on the 2012 landscape type wooded grasslands, Michael Roth is in charge of the mapping. You all have received related emails and you will find the schedule also below in the newsletter. Hans Renes is the coordinator for the 2013 landscape type water meadows. From 29 th of April to 6 th of May we had an online voting for the 2014 landscape element. And the winner is...: Stonewall landscapes 7 votes (very dense race with terraced landscapes, 6 votes). The transhumance landscapes caught up a little bit after the official deadline but remained at 2 votes. (Total participation: 17, which is quite satisfyingly). In April, our association was finally officially registered in the register of associations in Cologne/Germany. You will receive the invoices on the member fee in the coming weeks by our treasurer Michael Roth. We wish you a splendid springtime not regarding the weather ;-( On behalf of the board, Alexandra Forthcoming events EUCALAND activities time schedule: Completing maps of the wooded grasslands landscape type 2012 by the participating countries: - 31 st May returing the grid of the national map with wooded grasslands occurrence in the countries. Recent publications about cultural landscapes International Scientific Conference Landscape imagination Towards a new baseline for education in a changing world 2-3-4 MAY 2013 Ecole Nationale Supérieure d Architecture de Paris-la-Villette C. Newman, Y. Nussaume & B. Pedroli (Eds) 2013: Landscape & Imagination: towards a new baseline for education in a changing world. Conference, Paris 2-4. UNISCAPE, Florence/Bandecchi & Vivaldi, Pontedera. 720 pp. ISBN: 978-88-8341-548-7 This conference can be seen as the logical follow-up of the Conference Living Landscapes UNISCAPE organised October 2010 in Florence, Italy, at the occasion of the 10 th Anniversary of the European Landscape Convention. That conference focussed on the ways research can support the implementation of the European Landscape Convention. One of the conclusions was that awareness of the societal value of landscape is crucial for an adequate implementation of landscape protection, management and planning approaches, which signifies a huge challenge for education. Landscape & Imagination has addressed this challenge. Imagination is explicitly mentioned in the conference s title because education in the multifaceted nature of landscape requires going beyond the boundaries of disciplines, and across the dichotomy of empirical data versus perceived values. He describes social sensibilities, including the idea of environment. He seizes upon both the biological materiality of the countryside and its importance as a symbol. He holds up the natural reality of the landscape to the cultural one. His analysis takes us from beautiful nature to landscape development, from imposing order on it to putting it on stage. http://www.landscape-europe.net/files/putting%20the%20world%20on%20stage.pdf Fuchskaule 10, D-51491 Overath/ Germany, secretariat@eucalandnetwork.eu Page 4

Landscape Ecology for Sustainable Environment and Culture Author: Fu, Bojie; Jones K, Bruce (Eds.) Springer (to be published IX. 2013), 368 pages ISBN 978-94-007-6529-0 Nowadays, the conflicts between human and environment exist in many countries and regions globally. The book contains three main topics based on the contents of each chapter, i.e., concepts and approaches, landscape modeling, and landscape planning and management. The chapters try to seek relationships between humans and nature from different perspectives and how landscape ecology could do in understanding and resolving the conflicts between them. http://www.landscape-ecology.org/index.php?id=23&tx_ttnews[backpid]=12&tx_ttnews[tt_ news]=24&chash=bd845da91cbfbdb8bd6b2482d8ac4cc2 Resilience and the Cultural Landscape Author: Tobias Plieninger, Claudia Bieling Cambridge (October, 2012), 361 pages, ISBN 9781107020788 The 'cultural landscape' and 'resilience' approaches have, until now, largely been viewed as distinct methods for understanding the effects of these dynamics and the ways in which they might be adapted or managed. This book brings together these two perspectives, providing new insights into the social-ecological resilience of cultural landscapes by coming to terms with, and challenging, the concepts of 'driving forces', 'thresholds', 'adaptive cycles' and 'adaptive management'. By linking these research communities, this book develops a new perspective on landscape changes. http://www.cambridge.org/de/knowledge/isbn/item6878508/?site_locale=de_de Quaderni di Careggi Proceedings of the Careggi seminars in Florence, UNISCAPE The UNISCAPE publication since 2012, ISSN 2281-3195 I Quaderni di Careggi is an online publication collecting texts and papers presented at the Careggi Seminars, an initiative launched by UNISCAPE under the aegis of the Tuscany Region in order to celebrate the intellectual activity that once took place in the Villa Medicea of Careggi. They focus on the following questions: 1. What are cultural historic values of the landscape? 2. By means of which valuation methods can these values be expressed in economic terms? 3. Which economic assessment studies on the valuation of cultural historic aspects of the landscape are available? 4. On which type of cultural historic values is more research on the economic valuation needed? For more information: Ernst.Bos@wur.nl The University of the Aegean Summer Schools are supported by the project «The University of the Aegean, the prominent and driving factor for the economic and social growth of the wide Aegean area» of the Operational Program Education and Lifelong Learning, which is co-funded by European Union (European Social Fund) and Resources. Collaborative research for the European Landscape Convention Symposium organised by Bas Pedroli (UNISCAPE) and Peter Bezak (Landscape Europe) The symposium will answer the following questions. How can research influence landscape decision making? What are the necessary tools and procedures for genuine involvement of society in landscape research, and of knowledge (both lay and expert knowledge) in landscape governance? What kind of landscape expertise must be available to seriously enhance a desirable future of the European landscape? http://www.iale2013.eu/collaborative-research-for-elc PhD course European Landscapes in Transition: the Interplay between Local and Global Drivers The course is centered in the landscapes which traditionally have been classified as rural and have at present multiple characteristics, as the fragmented peri-urban fringes, the productivity agricultural areas, vibrant residential communities or the most marginal rural peripheries. The discussions will develop the understanding of the changes taking place based on merging conceptual backgrounds from different perspectives. It will consider the interaction between changes from local to global scales and the resulting multiple transition pathways occurring at the landscape scale. http://www.uniscape.eu/allegati/2013_phd%20manchester%20second%20announcement. pdf http://www.uniscape.eu/allegati/2013_phd%20manchester%20registration%20form.pdf Fuchskaule 10, D-51491 Overath/ Germany, secretariat@eucalandnetwork.eu Page 7
