Moroso racconta: Fergana 2009, Patricia Urquiola design An unexpected classic A generational bridge linking cultivated, inquisitive people and travel lovers
Nomadic in its modularity, elegant in its finishes A cross style identity: Fergana looks good in any setting because it speaks in contemporary terms: of its sleek design with modern furnishings, of its elegantly simple shape with classic furnishings Fergana is a seating range designed by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso. Its true value lies in the relationship between frame and upholstery which conjure up memories of the Silk Road and of Central Asia, a time honoured crossroads of peoples, cultures and traditions. A raised platform like frame of vaguely Chinese inspiration, nomadic in its modularity and elegant in its finishes, enhanced by large cushions embroidered with floral motifs taken from the Uzbek Suzani tradition to form a symbolic contrast with the digital images from an Eighties videogame. Inspired by the great salons of the Orient, Fergana uses a perfect combination of movement and immobility to cross the threshold between different languages, fuelling a new dialogue with space. This range of exceptionally comfortable, wide seating creates an interplay of looks where exquisitely embroidered abstract floral motifs create a fusion with the aliens of one of the most classic arcade games of the Eighties, Space Invaders. An increasingly mimetic, rapid invasion, ultimately harmonising with the design s intimate meaning. 04 /05
The embroidery The embroidery on Fergana cushions draws inspiration from beautiful SUZANI textiles: fabrics, curtains and clothes hand embroidered by the nomadic peoples of central Asia. Literally meaning needlework, Suzanis are traditionally sewn by future brides for their trousseau, using small pieces of fine cotton cloth woven in the home. inspiration Fergana: the origin of a name The name of this design derives from the Fergana Valley in east Uzbekistan, a central Asian country which was since ancient times a crossroad of nomad caravans and merchants travelling the Silk Road, between West and East, on the section that led from Samarcanda straight into the heart of China. 06 /07
The symbolic contrast between past and future, the work of the artisan and technology Amongst the embroidery on the cushions, traditional motifs of central Asian nomadic peoples contrast with the modern look of videogame digital designs of a (peaceful) alien invasion Fergana is a blend of classic looks, with sophisticated echoes of the 50s and the grand salons in the Oriental taste. Fergana was not designed to be a classic sofa placed against a wall, but rather an island, an epicentre of relations between people and spaces. Composed of a modular or monobloc sofa, Fergana has a lacquered wood frame in perfect visual harmony with the simple, geometric embroidered motifs. A painstaking materials study has resulted in exceptionally comfortable cushions, which are placed directly on the seat. Fergana speaks the language of those who experienced the 80s with its pop culture and videogames and were beguiled by the minimalist, Zen culture of the Orient that permeated the 90s. The geometric patterns embroidered on the cushions draw on the aliens of Space Invaders and Pac-man, which was the best known arcade game. The gameplay was very simple: a cannon at the bottom of the screen had to shoot down the aliens descending from a spaceship in order to avoid the symbolic invasion of Earth. 10 /11
Ideal relationship between the depth and height of the seat The cushions have removable cushions and are washable, therefore no particular precautions are required when using the sofa. Similarly, the industrial embroidery is highly resistant to rubbing and is colour fast. Fergana s platform is made of natural or painted solid ashwood, while the back and the armrest supports are black satin steel. The polyurethane foam and goosedown cushions may be beautifully embroidered. Fabrics carefully chosen for their pleasurable handle ensure superior comfort. Fergana can be completely disassembled to make it easier to recycle of its materials. Fergana is the fruit of Moroso s sustainability vision, from choosing materials and suppliers to the product s end of life Meticulous care throughout every production stage 12 /13
