Subscribed E-Books Dawsonera http://www.dawsonera.com/ Dawsonera is a collection of around 200 e-books covering a wide range of subject areas. In addition to the purchased titles which are available for 24 hour download, 66,000 further full-text titles are available for 5 minute previews. You will need your Athens username and password to access Dawsonera. Free Online E-Books The Internet Public Library http://www.ipl.org/div/books/ Over 20,000 titles that can be browsed by author, by title, or by Dewey Decimal Classification. No password required. Dissertations The Library has copies of Undergraduate 1st and 2.1 dissertations completed at Writtle College. They are included on the Library catalogue and it is possible to limit your search just to look for dissertations. They are all held in the short term loan room in alphabetical order of the author. DVDs The Library has a growing collection of DVDs on Gardens and also Feature films. They are listed on the computer catalogue and they can be borrowed or viewed upstairs in study room 3. You find them on a shelf under the stairs. Journals and Series Journals are an excellent source of information on current research, trends and practice. Print journals are arranged in alphabetical order of title. The current ones are on display on the ground floor, back numbers on the upper floor. There is an archive of some back issues held in our reserve store, if this is indicated on the catalogue please ask at the issue desk for them. Journals cannot be borrowed, but articles can be scanned or photocopied.

To find journal articles, you can also make use of the databases that the Library subscribes to. Databases index journals to provide details and abstracts of articles, some of them offer access to journals in full text. Relevant Print Journals Arboricultural Journal Garden Design Journal Gardens Illustrated Green Futures Green Places Horticulture Week Journal of Applied Ecology Journal of Environmental Horticulture Plant Heritage Plantsman, The Public Garden Spaces & Places Turf Professional Electronic Journals There is access to electronic journals through our databases (see below), these are some examples: Landscape and Urban Planning Landscape Journal www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/016920 46 http://tiny.cc/k7lu4 Current Awareness If you want to keep up-to-date in a particular subject area, it might be useful to subscribe to one of the alert services about new journal articles. There are several providers. ZETOC - http://zetoc.mimas.ac.uk The database comprises over 15 million article titles derived from the 20,000 most important research journals in the world, dating back to 1993. ZETOC Alert is a current awareness service that emails the contents pages of journals you have selected directly to you. Science Direct Alert Service - http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/alerts

Offers a My Alerts service which allows you to save searches and then schedule them to rerun at a chosen frequency. When new articles are found you will be sent an email alert with a direct link to the new search results. You need to register with Science Direct first. Please note this does not give you any further access to electronic journals. If you would like to access electronic journals on Science Direct please use your Athens password. Electronic information / Databases To find journal articles, you may use the databases the library subscribes to. Usually the database does not lead you to the full text but is just the reference i.e. the title, author, publisher of a book or journal and an abstract. Sometimes you can limit your search to certain journals. A database/indexing service will help you identify resources that can be found in the library or elsewhere. If we don t hold the resource required it is possible to get it through inter-library-loan. With some databases you can directly get the full text or a link to an online resource like the publisher s website. Databases / Indexing Services British Standards Online http://www.bsi-global.com Land, Life and Leisure http://edina.ac.uk/landlifeleisure Web of Knowledge http://wok.mimas.ac.uk Catalogue of British Standards.
