UF/IFAS Extension, Broward County Fall October December 2018, Volume II A Note From the Broward County s Urban Horticulture Extension Agent.. Dear Broward Green Bites Readers, Staring in the fall 2018, family-friendly biodiversity surveys called Bio Blitzes will be organized in various parks throughout Broward County. Below is information on how you can become a Citizen Scientist while learning about local biodiversity, rediscovering your local parks, and having fun outside! I am very excited to share with you our new Fall Broward Green Bites newsletter. In the past 5 months, I have met with many of you in person. It has been really great learning about all the amazing projects each and every one of you is working on as a Broward County Master Gardener. Our Fall newsletter is sharing some of our amazing 2018 summer Extension events, new projects and collaborative initiatives for new programming. Our Urban Horticulture team is working on mapping all of our Broward County Volunteer Projects. If you have a specific project you want to share on our map, please send me an email with the project title and the address. In the past five months, I have met several of you and been so moved to hear all the amazing things you are doing in our community. We would love to share those stories with our community because your projects are making a difference! UF/IFAS Extension, Broward County We would like to thank our dedicated Master Gardeners for assisting us every month at UF/IFAS Extension and for help in maintain our Native demonstration Garden. Come and Join us! We are very proud of our amazing Broward County Master Gardeners for attending the September 2018 Fort Lauderdale Quarterly Tree Giveaway. It was a successful event held in Holiday Park. They had 144 city resident registrants and were able to distribute 535 native trees! You can learn more about the City of Fort Lauderdale FREE tree giveaway events at: https://gyr.fortlauderdale.gov/ / /quarterly-tree-giveaways Broward County Master Gardeners attending the 2018 Southeast District Florida Master Gardener advanced Training in Martin County. Lorna Bravo presented The Florida Monarch Project. 2

Water Trends At Extension on September 19th, 2018 UF/IFAS Extension Broward County launched the first Water Conservation Awareness workshop. Dr. Sifuentes presented a wonderful workshop on Trends in Water Availability for Southeast Florida. Stay connected, we will be coming back with a wonderful workshop for our Master Gardeners in the Spring 2019!! Climate Change At Extension on September 18th, 2018 Not all species are adjusting to this warming at the same rate, and as a result, some are falling out of step. We had a full house at UF/IFAS Extension in Broward County during NatureScape s meeting September 3

Wildlife & Water Conservation Future Project Location Master Gardeners Leading the project: Cindy Jenkins Pat Rossi Terri Bitler Ward Amy Rielly Martha Craine The Butterfly and Water-wise Conservation Garden Project will upgrade our UF/IFAS Broward County Extension Landscape by adding several colorful pollinator host plants. The project will also include hardscape and art in the forms of a wall installation, at least one rain barrel and additional Native Plants and Butterfly Identification signs. This sustainable garden model will conserves water and crucial wildlife habitat. The project is a powerful forum to present STEM concepts to Broward Schools and 4H. By creating and using this small oasis as a model, the people who come to our UF/IFAS Extension building will see the garden as a teaching demonstration space and be inspired! 4

Connecting youth to mentors as they connect to nature together We are excited to introduce the new Pollinator Garden space at New River Groves. This will complement the calming space they have created for their student participants with sensory disorders such as autism. This Garden will provide a gentle way to stimulate the senses while providing a safe and comfortable way to explore nature without feeling overwhelmed. This is a wonderful opportunity to help kids interact with the environment, encourage discovery and participation in the outdoors, and promote a place for socialization, interaction, and learning. We look forward to sharing this garden with many students across Broward County and everyone that visits New River Groves. - Kellye Hoffman UF/IFAS Extension Broward County wants to thank Master Gardener Kellye Hoffman, Steve Wain and Bob Roth for their contribution on the new butterfly garden. The butterfly garden is an addition to their Horticulture therapy program at New River Groves. We are looking for New Master Gardeners that want to volunteer on this project. 5
