Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Contractors HVAC contractors are called to replace residential water heaters. Customers often ask them for comparisons of Tankless vs. Traditional water heaters. Note: All emails will be sent to your instructor, but written as if you are writing to the individual listed or job position. Learner Information and Tasks: Task 1: Research at least 3 websites and create a document for customers listing at least 5 pros and cons of both types of water heaters. Include a section for customer comments. Task 2: Write an email and send it to the customer with the comparisons document attached. 2

Answer Key Task 1 Research at least 3 websites and create a document for customers listing at least 5 pros and cons of both types of water heaters. Include a section for customer comments. The document should look similar to the one on the next page. 3

Tankless vs. Traditional Storage Hot Water Tanks Comparison Pros Gas powered is more cost effective Energy savings Tank Less Water Heater Cons If electrically powered not efficient Variation in water temp if more than one tap is used at a time Heat water only when the tap is turned on Not very hot when flow is reduced Long service life compared to traditional water heaters Less space required Pros Gas powered is more cost effective Current natural gas pricing makes this less expensive No maintenance Long service life compared to traditional water heaters High installation costs Flushed periodically to prevent calcium buildup Approx. 199,000BTU - more costly Traditional Water Heater Cons 50,000 BTU - Less costly NA If electrically powered not efficient More space required Not very hot when flow is reduced High installation costs Additional Comments for the customer's consideration. Note this could also be listed under Cons : Canadian winters are not friendly to Tankless water heaters. It takes more energy to heat the water coming out of the ground in the winter. 4

Task 2 Write an email and send it to the customer with the comparisons document attached. 5
