Year 3. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Read the information about Forces and answer the questions below: Forces are all around us. Forces are the pushes and pulls that affect an object s shape and movement. Forces can make things move, speed up, slow down, change shape or change direction. Things move differently on different surfaces. A push moves something away. Wind is an example of a pushing force. Wind can push a sailboat through water and move a kite in the sky. High winds occur in tornadoes and hurricanes. Such winds can be extremely strong and can cause damage to roads and buildings. A pull moves something toward something else. The force of gravity of the earth pulls things towards it. The direction of the force of gravity is downwards towards the centre of the earth. a. What is a Force? Give any two examples of forces in nature. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- b. Name the force that pulls things towards the centre of the earth? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 P a g e

Give reason. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Sam and Anna tested the breaking strength of six different kinds of thread. They attached a thread to a force meter and Anna pulled. 2 P a g e

Sam recorded the size of the force on the force meter when the thread broke. The force metre they used. Their teacher said this was not a safe way to investigate breaking threads. a) What is a safety risk in their investigation?... b) Complete the table to show what must be the same, what must be different and what makes no difference in this investigation. Tick ONE box for each statement. The first one has been done for you. 3 P a g e

3. Oak trees produce acorns. New oak trees grow from the acorn seeds. Look at the picture of the acorn seed germinating. a) Tick ONE box to show which part of the plant comes out of the acorn seed first as it germinates. Leaf Stem Root Petal b) The jay is a bird. It collects acorns from oak trees and buries them in the ground to eat later. Sometimes the jay does not go back for the acorns. The jay helps part of the oak tree s life cycle. Which part of the oak tree s life cycle does the jay help? Tick ONE box. Pollination Seed dispersal Growth Seed production 4 P a g e

Choose the correct words given in the box to label the parts of a flower Pistil Stamen Pollen Sepal Petal Fill in the blanks a) The male part of a flower is. b) When pollination happens, the begin to grow with the seeds inside them and seeds later grow into new. c) The function of sepals is to the flower in the bud stage. 5 P a g e

5. a) Match the following parts to the labels W, X, Y and Z Stem Roots Flower Leaf b) Which part of the plant, W, X, Y or Z - Absorbs water and nutrients? - Absorbs light? - Anchors the plant? - Supports the plant? - Make food for the plant? - Attract the pollinators? c) Name any two pollinators. 1 2. d) Give two reasons why seeds need to be scattered away from the parent plant. 1.. 2 6 P a g e

6. Fill in the boxes and complete the Plant life cycle by choosing the correct letter for each box in the correct order. (2 marks) A FLOWER (The plant grows and develops flowers) B GERMINATION (The seed starts to grow into a seedling) C SEED DISPERSAL (Seeds spread out) D FERTILISATION (Seeds develop and flowers die) E POLLINATION (Pollen moves from male to female part) Plant life cycle B 7 P a g e

7. The picture shows two types of roots. a) Write the type of root under each picture. b) Plants absorb water from the soil. Name the two parts of the plant through which the water must travel from the soil to reach the leaves. 1... 2... c) Some plants have parts that are edible for humans. Write two examples for each edible part. Leaves Fruits Stem Root Seed 8 P a g e
